Jerome Cavaliere Jerome Cavaliere develops his work with conciseness. His works appropriate space with force and minimalism. He likes repeating gestures. Filling page after page by using a tidy scholar handwriting. Delimiting neat spaces and coloring them methodically, producing a precise and unexpected texture. He likes to stage disobedience, arbitrariness and violence with childlike ingenuousness. His pieces often work with such kind of doublespeak or at least with a certain strain. He particularly likes stepping over limits. His work mainly approaches the question of authority, boundaries, borders, social and behavioral norms - all these lines and limits inhabit his works. He likes observing his masters and tries to imitate them/to do as they do, sometimes even to copy their works. Is that going too far? Jerome Cavaliere doesn’t like to stay within one field. His latest works go back on his competitive athlete experience and confront it to his artistic practice. The match is starting. Discussion with a work of art shows Jerome Cavaliere as an archer, but an archer with an unusual target. Indeed, he replicated three times one of the most important works of Olivier Mosset, a black ring on a white background. Using bow and arrow, Jerome Cavaliere shot more than hundred arrows on each painting. The first shooting session was done with a distance of 30 meters, the second with 50 meters and the last with 70 meters. DISCUSSION WITH A WORK OF ART ATTEMPT #1, #2 and #3, 2012 Video HDV, 16:9, 14’ https://vimeo.com/48136630 Edition of 5 The three paintings are the original targets from the video Discussion with a work of art. The pattern of points on the canvases is made by the impacts of the hundred arrows shot on it. The accuracy is relative to the distance. DISCUSSION WITH A WORK OF ART ATTEMPT 30, 50 and 70m, 2012 Acrylic on canvas 100 x 100 cm each View of exhibition // Gallery Hors Les Murs/H.L.M. - Marseille GOLF WAR, 2012 Video HDV, 16:9, 12’ Edition of 5 After fifteen years, two childhood friends meet again for a new round. They go playing golf but they have their own ritual: after having found two clubs and collected balls along the river beside the golf course, they sit down on the other bank outside the golf course, next to hole number 16. With rough swings, they use their stock of balls while trying to do a hole-in-one. FLAGRANT DÉLIT (Flagrante delicto), 2011 Photograph on Dibond 105 x 70 cm each Edition of 6 In Flagrante Delicto shows Jerome Cavaliere as a burglar, caught red-handed while stealing works of Jannis Kounellis or Dan Flavin at collectors’ homes. The flashlight of the camera freezes the scene where the character is in action, in a suit and tie or driving a fork lift. The artworks, wich are about to be stolen, all have in common their minimal aspect and lack of lyricism. The question is: is it true ? Of course not, Jerome Cavaliere is a bad actor and the scene becomes ludicrous – as ridiculous as those critics about this kind of artworks that say “Everyone can do it”. Olivier Mosset #1 Bernar Venet #1 Dan Flavin #1 Jannis Kounellis #1 Dan Flavin #2 ABILITIES, 2011 Print on paper, framed 21 x 30 cm Abilities is a document signed by the artist David Tremlett which authorizes Jerome Cavaliere to make David Tremlett’s wall drawings. On http://artathome.over-blog.net, one can freely download instruction manuals to do artworks of famous artists as Monica Bonvicini or Olivier Mosset by oneself. Each instruction manual comprehends a pedagogic approach presenting the artwork and the artist’s concept. This pedagogical approach initiates non-specialists to the new forms of contemporary art.
