Bingo on Sunday, December 11 starting at 2 pm in the basement of St.
Anne Church in Falher.

Dear Father, Pastoral Assistants and Parishioners,
It’s hard to believe. Advent is here, and Christmas is around the corner. How quickly time goes, and
then we are into 2017.
Father Eucharius, SDV
Today, I met Father Eucharius at the airport in Grande Prairie, and welcomed him to my home, where
he will stay for the next several weeks. Father belongs to a religious congregation called the Vocationist
Fathers. He is bilingual, and will eventually be working in McLennan and other parishes in that deanery.
We are awaiting another Vocationist Father in the near future; they will form a community as they live and
work out of the former chancery building in McLennan. Over the coming weeks, Father Eucharius will be
preparing himself for all that he needs in order to take up ministry as a priest in this archdiocese. We do this
with every priest when he first arrives in Canada.
Liturgical Music Workshops
We have held two Liturgical Music Workshops in the archdiocese in the past months, led by
Bernadette Gasslein. These were held in Manning on October 1st and in Grande Prairie on November 6th. I
have heard very positive comments on these workshops. There was supposed to be a third one, in McLennan
on October 15th, but inclement weather prevented Bernadette from coming that Saturday. The McLennan
workshop has now been rescheduled to Saturday 6 May 2017 in McLennan.
Faith Rally
You will recall that we had to consider the future of the annual Faith Rally that took place in late
August every year in Grouard. Having seen the attendance diminish each year at these, I have decided that
we will not hold these on an annual basis in the future. In its place, I wish to highlight in our archdiocese the
summer faith events that are offered annually, as well as those which are singular events. Besides our annual
pilgrimages, this year the Dunvegan mission is celebrating 150 years, and a program is being planned which
will include an outdoor Mass near the mission church on that site. I will be encouraging our people to attend
this and other similar events as they are announced.
50th Anniversary of Development and Peace
In 1967, in response to the encyclical Populorum Progressio of Pope Paul VI, the Canadian Bishops
established the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace. For the past half century, D&P
has worked with partners around the world in helping to bring about justice, development and improvement
in some of the poorest and neediest parts of the globe. As a member of Caritas Internationalis which gathers
together all such Catholic organizations around the world, D&P also provides emergency aid to places that
are hit by catastrophes such as hurricanes and earthquakes.
Next year marks D&P’s 50th anniversary, which each diocese is asked to celebrate in its chosen ways.
I met recently with some members of D&P from our archdiocese. We will be marking the year in a variety
of ways in which your participation will be appreciated.
Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, December 12th
Because of the role of Our Lady of Guadalupe in the evangelization of the Native peoples of Central
and South America, she has been heralded as the Patroness of America (all of America, that is). We are
invited to honour her each year on her feast day, December 12th; on that day, Pope Francis will be
celebrating a special Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica. I encourage all of our parishes to mark this day as a day of
prayer, especially for the Indigenous peoples of North and South America.
Parish Pastoral Council Discussion / Parish Pastoral Plan
The Archdiocese has drawn up a pastoral plan, which over a five year period is designed to increase
the pastoral life and outreach of the archdioceses as a whole. The needs and actions identified in this plan
cover five broad areas: Good Liturgy, Good Teaching, Community, Ministry, Communication and
Accountability. There are tasks identified under each of these headings. We are already seeing the good
results of this plan (for example, in the creation of the Archdiocesan Liturgy Committee and the liturgical
music workshops mentioned above, and the RCIA workshop in September with Bishop Wiesner).
In a similar fashion, Parish Pastoral Councils would do well to examine their role in advancing
“pastoral planning”. At your next meeting, ask yourselves the following questions:
 Are we familiar with the Archdiocesan Pastoral Plan?
 Are we familiar with the Year Two Action Plan; September 2016-August 2017?
 Do we have a parish liturgy committee?
 How are we dealing with the RCIA in our Parish Pastoral Committee meetings?
 How have we promoted Family Prayer among the families in our parish?
 Do we have a “succession plan” to replace those who can no longer volunteer in our parish’s many
ministries?

Merry Christmas. This is a special time of year, when the truth of Christ’s birth into the world touches our

C’est difficile à croire. L’Avent est ici, et Noël est tout proche. Que le temps passe vite, et ensuite
nous sommes en 2017!
Le Père Eucharius, SDV
Aujourd’hui, j’ai rencontré le Père Eucharius à l’aéroport de Grande Prairie et l’a accueilli chez moi,
où il demeurera pendant les prochaines semaines. Le Père fait partie d’une congrégation religieuse appelée
les Pères Vocationistes. Il est bilingue et travaillera par la suite à McLennan et autres paroisses de ce
doyenné. Nous attendons un autre prêtre Vocationiste dans le proche avenir ; ils formeront une communauté
ensemble et leurs résidence sera dans l’ancienne chancellerie à McLennan. Dans les prochaines semaines, le
Père Eucharius se préparera pour son ministère sacerdotal dans cet archidiocèse. Nous faisons cela avec
chaque prêtre lorsqu’il arrive au Canada.
Ateliers en musique liturgique
Nous avons tenu deux ateliers de musique liturgique dans l’archidiocèse au cours des derniers mois,
dirigé par Bernadette Gasslein. Ceux-ci ont eu lieu à Manning le 1er octobre et à Grande Prairie le 6
novembre. J’ai entendu des commentaires très positifs à cet égard. Elle a été chargée d’en faire un
troisième, à McLennan le 15 octobre, mais les intempéries l’ont empêché de faire la route ce samedi-là.
L’atelier à McLennan a été reprogrammé pour samedi 6 mai 2017.
Rallye de la foi
Vous vous souviendrez que nous devions envisager l’avenir du rallye de foi annuel qui a eu lieu à la
fin août chaque année à Grouard. Après avoir vu la fréquentation diminuer chaque année, j’ai décidé de ne
plus en avoir sur une base annuelle dans l’avenir. À sa place, je tiens à souligner, dans notre diocèse, les
événements de foi durant l’été qui sont offerts annuellement, ainsi que les événements singuliers. Outre nos
pèlerinages annuels, la mission de Dunvegan célèbre cette année 150 ans, et c’est prévu que le programme
comprendra une messe en plein air près de l’église de la mission sur ce site. J’encouragerai notre peuple à
participer à ceci et d’autres événements semblables dès qu’ils seront annoncés.
50e anniversaire de Développement et Paix
En 1967, en réponse à l’encyclique Populorum Progressio du pape Paul VI, les évêques du Canada
ont créé l’Organisation catholique canadienne pour le développement et la paix. Depuis un demi-siècle, D &
P collabore avec des partenaires du monde entier à contribuer à la justice, le développement et l’amélioration
dans certaines parties les plus pauvres et les plus démunies du globe. En tant que membre de Caritas
Internationalis, qui regroupe toutes ces organisations catholiques du monde entier, D & P fournit également
une aide d’urgence à des endroits qui sont touchés par des catastrophes telles que les ouragans et
tremblements de terre.
L’année prochaine marquera le 50e anniversaire de D & P, et chaque diocèse est invité à le célébrer
dans ses modalités choisies. J’ai récemment rencontré certains membres du D & P de notre archidiocèse.
Nous marquerons l’année dans une variété de façons, dont votre participation sera appréciée.
Fête de Notre-Dame de Guadalupe, 12 décembre
En raison du rôle de notre Dame de Guadalupe à l’évangélisation des peuples indigènes en Amérique
centrale et du Sud, elle est nommée la patronne de l’Amérique (l’ensemble de l’Amérique). Nous sommes
invités à lui rendre hommage chaque année le jour de sa fête, le 12 décembre ; ce jour-là, le pape François
célébrera une messe spéciale dans la Basilique Saint-Pierre à Rome. J’encourage toutes nos paroisses de
marquer cette journée comme une journée de prière, en particulier pour les peuples autochtones d’Amérique
du Nord et du Sud.
Discussion du Conseil Pastoral Paroissial / Plan de la pastorale de la paroisse
L’Archidiocèse a élaboré un plan pastoral, qui, sur une période de cinq ans, vise à renforcer la vie
pastorale et la diffusion des archidiocèses dans son ensemble. Les besoins et les actions identifiées dans le
présent plan couvrent cinq grands domaines : la liturgie, l’enseignement, la communauté, le ministère, la
communication et la responsabilité. Il y a des tâches définies au titre de chacune de ces positions. Nous
constatons déjà des bons résultats de ce plan (par exemple, à la création du Comité archidiocésain de liturgie,
les ateliers de musique liturgique mentionnés ci-dessus, et l’atelier sur le catéchuménat en septembre avec
Mgr Wiesner).
De même, les conseils pastoraux paroissiaux feraient bien d’examiner leur rôle dans la promotion de
« programmation pastorale ». Lors de votre prochaine réunion, vous pouvez vous posez les questions
suivantes :
• Sommes-nous au courant du Plan Pastoral archidiocésain ?
• Sommes-nous au courant du Plan d’Action 2ieme Année : septembre 2016 - août 2017 ?
• Avons-nous un Comité de liturgie paroissiale?
• Comment traitons-nous le catéchuménat lors de nos réunions du Comité de pastorale paroissiale ?
• Comment avons-nous encouragé la prière en famille dans notre paroisse ?
• Avons-nous un « plan de succession » pour remplacer ceux et celles qui ne peuvent plus agir comme
bénévole dans les nombreux ministères de notre paroisse?
