Business Manager’s Comments
March 2014
Dear Brothers/Sisters:
As we battle through the cold weather that never seems to end the work picture continues to
be strong for Local 586.
Many of the travelers we have welcomed over the past year have gone back to their
respective jurisdictions. We have been fortunate to be in the enviable position of having
enough work to share with other IBEW members from across Canada.
Organizing will continue to be priority number one as we try to gain increased market share
for our membership to enjoy. I once again would like to welcome Lorne's Electric Limited to
our membership. Lorne's is a significant player in the residential marketplace and employs
upwards of 35 electricians and apprentices at any given time.
Organizers Kurt Metz and John Harrison have done a great job of explaining the benefits of a
unionized environment to the unorganized sector in our large jurisdiction. If any member
knows an electrician or apprentice working for a non-union contractor please have them
contact either John or Kurt for further information on becoming 586 members.
We have had calls for manpower that have gone unfilled and will be calling for travelers if we
are unable to fill them with local members. If you are currently unemployed, you are
encouraged to call the jobline on a nightly basis to secure employment.
I once again want to thank the members for their continued support of myself and my entire
office staff. Together we will make sure Local 586 Ottawa remains the envy of all IBEW
jurisdictions.
Sincerely,
James Barry

Commentaire du Gérant d’Affaires
Mars 2014
James Barry
Gérant d’Affaires et
Confrère
