“There are great wines. There are the world's great wines. Some bottles go one
step further offering "Oh My God," tasting experiences! 1990 Beausejour Duffau can be
an OMG wine. With a perfume that explodes with black licorice, truffle, crushed rocks,
smoke, black raspberries, BBQ, spicy black cherries, forest floor and tobacco scents, your
nose is riveted to the glass. Once past the compelling perfume, waves of incredibly
concentrated pure, ripe, dark fruits and minerality coats your mouth and palate, due to
the amazing viscosity of the wine. The dry Port like finish of plum liqueur remains for
over sixty seconds. This incredible Bordeaux wine tasting experience is only going to get
better over the next few decades. It will be interesting to see if the 2009 or 2010 reach
this same level of perfection. This bottle was popped and poured into a decanter and
served within a few minutes.”

« Still deep ruby red with tawny rim, dense and viscous, the nose is really ripe
and sweet with dark berries, blackcurrant, leather and truffles, there is also a fine,
almost exotic spiciness. The palate shows a very high concentration, impeccably
structured with a broad structure and luscious mouth feel, layers of dark fruit and a
complex spiciness, the aftertaste is vigorous and very long, supported by finely grained
tannins and superb complexity. Still a very dense and rich wine that will continue to
grow, super stuff... »

« Dégustation à l’aveugle.
Couleur :
1° nez :
Très belle couleur rouge sombre, légèrement évoluée.
Net, intense, fin, suave et complexe. Il évoque un bouquet
d’évolution avec des notes de cuir, de fumée. Il est toujours fruité et ressemble à du
cabernet sauvignon plus qu’à du merlot.
Bouche :
Elle est extrêmement séduisante. Partout, le vin caresse. Le corps charnu
se développe avec une régularité et une harmonie très plaisantes. La sensation est à la
fois veloutée et élancée. Le tanin final est très bien enrobé.
Par contre, au fur et à mesure des gorgées dégustées, le vin est apparu plus
monolithique dans la bouche et, surtout, il a montré un tanin boisé imperceptible au
départ de la dégustation. Cette finale boisée a diminué la hauteur de la notation. On
apprendra par la suite que, dans les autres bouteilles du même cru goûtée par les
dégustateurs présents, la finale était plus noble.»

« Depuis 4 ans, ce vin a gagné en fraîcheur et en classe. Il a perdu l’aspect « irradiant »,
« entêtant » et trop « chaud », sans doute dû à l’alcool, qui me gênait. C’est le signe
d’un grand terroir.
Couleur :
Rouge sang. Intense. Belle. Unie. Légère évolution.
1° nez :
Net. Intensité moyenne. Assez frais. Fruité. Note animale puis de figue
sèche. Epicé.
Agitation :
Moins ouvert que d’autres. Crémeux.
Bouche :
Attaque souple et dense, se développant sur une structure concentrée,
dense serrée, assez juteuse, qui évolue sur un goût plutôt frais et un toucher de bouche
caressant. Après le milieu de bouche, le vin reste gras mais aussi ferme et finit sur un
goût de cassis. Persistance sur un fond de bois et vanille plutôt longue. Grain tannique
ferme.»

« I have had the 1990 Beauséjour-Duffau a half dozen times since the in-thebottle report in issue #85 (2-28-93). I believe this wine may, 15-20 years, be considered
to be one of the greatest wines made this century. It is in a league with such legends as
the 1961 Latour à Pomerol. Beauséjour-Duffau’s 1990 has always been the most
concentrated wine of the 1990 vintage. The color remains an opaque murky purple. The
nose offers up fabulously intense aromas of black fruits (plums, cherries, and currants),
along with smoke, a roasted herb/nut component, and a compelling minerality. The wine
is fabulously concentrated, without standing purity, and a nearly unprecedented
combination of richness, complexity, and overall balance and harmony. What makes this
effort so intriguing is that as good as Beauséjour can be, I know of no vintage of this
estate’s wine that has come remotely close to this level of quality. In several blind
tastings, I have mistaken this wine for either the 1989 or 1990 Petrus ! However, the
1990 Beauséjour-Duffau is even more concentrated than those prodigious efforts. It
should be at its best between 2000-2030. »

«(...) I tasted the 1990 Beauséjour-Duffau on the three separate occasions
during the holidays, and once again in a blind testing of 1990 s sponsored by
Executive Wine Seminars in New York City with 150 tasters in attendance. The 1990
Beauséjour-Duffau came in first, crushing such awesome competitors as Château
Margaux, Lafite-Rothschild, Latour, Petrus and even Montrose. I also served it to guests
who are serious Bordeaux enthusiasts, but who had not purchased the property’s 1990
(not prestigious enough I suppose). I am beginning to think this wine is a modern day
legend candidate for perfection in 10 - 15 years - it is that awesomely concentrated and
rich. This mind - blowing effort will be very difficult to find as this property is tiny.
According to advertisements I have seen, the price has jumped over 150 % with the wine
currently retailing for $ 900 a case. It is worth it ! (...).»

Nez : le boisé très fin ne masque pas les fruits mûrs.
Bouche : joliment charpenté; un bon boisé, des tannins grillés, une trame serrée avec un
bon prolongement.
Conclusions : un grand vin pour les uns, un joli vin pour les autres, de toute façon une
bouteille réussie. Michel Dovaz et Thieery Desseauve célèbrent « son harmonie, sa
complexité, sa finesse, son grand potentiel, sa superbe bouche tannique et ample ».

finest wine I have ever tested from Beauséjour - Duffau. An opaque black / ruby
color is followed by a bouquet that offers up intense, lingering aromas of herb-scented
cassis, licorice, minerals, sweet plums, and new oak. In the mouth, there is outstanding
extraction of fruit, superlative depth and power, a formidable unctuosity and density, as
well as an overall sense of elegance and finesse - an exceedingly difficult combination, to
produce in wine. This profound St Emilion is a must buy, but move quickly as the
production of 3,000 cases is among the smallest of the St. Emilion premiers grands
crus. »

plums, and new oak. In the mouth, there is an outstanding extraction of fruit, superlative
depth and power as well as an overall sense of elegance and finesse - an exceedingly
difficult combination to produce in the same wine. This profound St-Emilion merits a
