Yto Barrada was born in 1971 in Morocco. She lives and works in Tangier. The Botanist was shot in Tangier in the garden of Umberto Pasti, a writer, an expert in Islamic ceramics, and a self-taught botanist, who divides his time between Milan and Morocco. His garden, situated in a village on the Atlantic coast in the south of Tangier, harbours hundreds of varieties of Moroccan plants, including certain rare or endangered species. Here, he hosts a group of expert English botanists for a day. Elisabetta Benassi was born in Italy in 1966. The film Io non ho mani che mi accarezzino il volto - for which the title was inspired by Mario Giacomelli’s photographic series – takes as subject the famous portrait of Mona Lisa painted by Leonardo da Vinci, reduced by mass tourism to the status of merchandise. Playing on the conditions in which this work is displayed in its room at the Louvre Museum, the film shows Mona Lisa, in front of a uninterruted flow of visitors, observing in turn the public which becomes both the spectators and actors of a analysis of the modalities of the perception. Louidgi Beltrame was born in 1971. He lives and works in Paris. The film Energodar – meaning “the gift of energy” in Russian – is an exploration of the Ukranian Atomgrads. These satellite towns for nuclear factories were kept secret during the Soviet era and were based on the model of Prypiat – the atomgrad of the Chernobyl factory that was abandoned in 1986 after the nuclear disaster. Part documentary and part science- fiction, this film consists of a series of fixed observational shots, drawing together readings from archives, personal narrative and Soviet rock music. Patrick Bernatchez was born in 1972 in Montreal where he lives and works. In this film, a pianist plays a slightly dissonant sonata. Through changes in points of view and repeated camera rotations, a vertiginous sensation develops. The strangeness of the whole, on both audio and visual levels, leads spectators into a parallel world, distancing us from visible reality and plunging us into a poetic microcosm that reflects the complexity of human sensations and perceptions. These two film-installations are based on archives of the punk movement between 1976 and 2031. The title No Future adopts the slogan of punk protest and highlights the paradoxical realisation of being already in the future. The second title, No Past paradoxically introduces an abolition of the past, which is considered to be the basis of the human psyche but also of subjectivity, and thus of the existence of human beings in general. Born in 1974 in Germany, Ulla von Brandenburg lives and works in Paris and Hamburg. The film Chorspiel tells the story of an encounter between a traveller and a family: a grandfather, grandmother, mother and daughter. Each family member fulfils his or her own role (living in one room) with the rituals this entails (playing, fighting, resting, or working out family problems). The traveller interrupts their family life, thus confronting them with the unknown, and the possibility of a new life. Besides the five characters, the play is sung by a choir of sixteen people who echo the soloists, as in Greek tragedy where the choir resonates like a conscience. Alain Bublex was born in 1961 in Lyon. He lives and works between Lyon and Paris. Over the course of a dinner, night falls on a motionless city centre. The image is animated only by the incessant coming and going of helicopters, without any modification being made to the constructions. Beyond the renewed invention of the landscape, Alain Bublex constructs the image of a generic and archetypal 20th century city. David Walter McDermott was born in 1952 in Hollywood. Peter Thomas McGough was born in 1958 in Syracuse, New York. They live and work in New York and Dublin. Mean To Me, 1936 presents the tragic end of a love story set in Manhattan in the 1930s, in which a brilliant courtesan discovers that her lover, an aristocrat ruined by the Depression, wants to marry a wealthy heiress in order to refill the coffers… Over the course of a range of intense emotions, the weak and vulnerable woman becomes strong. Her character symbolises a conception of American social history in which the idealised woman imagines herself to be beautiful, glamorous and endowed with a rich, multi-faceted personality. Peter Downsbrough was born in 1940 in New Jersey, U.S.A. He lives and works in Brussels. The film takes places in the interior of an empty office building in Zaventem’s Corporate Village, next to Brussels Airport. Human presence is only to be found outside, through the windows, in the passing cars or nearby office buildings. Using fluid camera movements, travelling as well as panning (close to 180°), the artist scrutinizes the environment, exploring formal and semantic relations: inside and outside, empty and inhabited, horizontal and vertical, light and dark. The geometry of the space, emphasized by the use of black and white images and by austere framing, determines that of the screen as well. Cédrick Eymenier was born in 1974. He lives and works in Paris and Montpellier. With this film, he examines two temporalities – the immutable and the precarious – which are interdependent, despite their opposition. The camera is fixed. The images rely on the circular and fragile movements of a Ferris wheel. The regularity with which the metallic structure of this wheel obstructs the field of vision recalls the cyclical characteristics of time. The swaying motion, perceptible throughout the film, introduces uncertainty: an invisible shred of the unknown. The twilight atmosphere and the appearance of the garish lights of the funfair give the image a strange connotation ; an unreal quality that is almost fantastic like the atmosphere that David Lynch creates in his films. The soundtrack is composed of cracking noises and the notes of a harp, which gradually accentuate an expectation of danger, a potential threat. Claire Fontaine is the pseudonym of an Italian/British artistic duo founded in 2004 and based in Paris. This film reveals how to break down the resistance of the closed doors we are confronted with on a daily basis. The lock, that proves not to be an obstacle which is hostile to our desires, is potentialy a new lover. A world of dialogues between inanimate beings and humans is played out here. Feeling, touching and listening are learned afresh by those who may wish to succeed at lock picking. Instructions for the Sharing of Private Property, 2006 (45 min) Présenté par Chantal Crousel, Paris Anna Gaskell Née dans l’Iowa en 1969, Anna Gaskell vit et travail à New York. Born in Iowa in 1969, Anna Gaskell lives and works in New York. SOSW Ballet is an experimental film that revolves around the creation of discourse through movement. Directed by Anna Gaskell, this film is choreographed and performed by the children of the Special School of Podgorki (SOSW) in Poland, an academy and boarding school for children aged 8 to 18 founded forty years ago. Working and living together as a community, the pupils of SOSW range from those with a average aptitude for learning through to those with mild or severe disorders. In SOSW Ballet, dance becomes a means of raising the barriers to communication. Taro Izumi was born in 1976 in Nara, Japan. He lives and works in Tokyo. In Napoleon, the artist presents his discovery of Paris while attempting to appropriate the images, symbols and people that he meets along the way. By catching them on the fly, with his camera and his hand, the images that he retains take the form of a rapid sketch in the palm of his hand. The film speaks of the discovery of another culture and its representation. Karen Kilimnik was born in the United States in 1955. ‘Nice--and--... introducing Tabitha’, the artist’s first video work, features footage shot in several locations in France (a disco, a villa, a garden and the Nice Airport), montaged alongside candid shots of the pleasant disarray of her studio and pet cat, Tabitha. The film is an ode to the romance of France; the allure of its chandeliers and straw baskets heightened by the comfort of Karen Kilimnik’s domestic life. David Lamelas was born in Argentina in 1946. Hildegarde Duane was born in Los Angeles. The result of a collaboration which spans three decades, AppleLife® continues the artists’ exploration of politics, morality, humor and glamour. Lamelas, the internationally renowned conceptual artist and filmmaker continues his deconstruction of archetype and self-myth by means of the Rock Star character, while Los Angeles based storyteller Duane tackles the iconic scientist, the most recent of her inquiries into the cultural significance of maligned and celebrated female icons. Duane and Lamelas’s works range across many genres (documentary, film noir, social satire) and media (film, video, prints, sculpture, installation) in an attempt to illuminate the eternal and the mundane. AppleLife® poised where the quest for knowledge, genetic modification and the Fountain of Youth meet. The film Asterion (Rider) by Gonzalo Lebrija is a parable about man and power, and what it feels like to be master of the moment. We apprehend a man in a black Armani suit carrying a conventional black attaché case, as an emblem of the businessman, riding a raging bull. Through in a slow motion movement of the camera, the animal rears up and down in an attempt to toss the rider whose arm - holding the attaché case- is thrown up in the air in an effort to maintain balance. Finally, the attaché case flies open, spilling a sheaf of white papers that float into the dark night as the rider is tossed in the air. Frédéric Lecomte develops video journals of sketches and animated images executed in double time. In his various opuses, his lines capture snatches of cinema and television – a set of visible raw material that he reactivates by cutting up, subverting, and hollowing out. This is the “décorps” of his work (a pun in French, playing on “décor” or “setting”, and “disembodiment”): the video plays out like a theatre of the equivocal, in which the act of presenting exposes reality and illusion in a single movement of give and take. These subverted images, the skeletons of an appearance that is no longer recognisable, reveal – to the beat of intentionally contrasting rhythms and soundscapes – an equation with two unknown factors: what they wish to show, and what they no longer show. Lucas Michael was born in Argentina in 1965. He lives in Los Angeles. A re-enactment of the scenes in Klute a film by Alan J. Pakula (1970) in which Bree Daniels discusses with her analyst her need –both financial and emotional– to prostitute herself vis-à-vis her acting career. The film deals with an exploration of the control of our physical bodies as a sublimation of the art practice. Jeff Mills was born in 1963 in Detroit. He lives and works in Berlin. In 2005, the artist created a series of six video works in which he composed and edited a soundtrack to Three Ages, the first feature film directed by Buster Keaton in 1923. Shaping his own soundtrack, he uses images like a databank in the same way that he shapes his own sound repertoire. Here, he continues the experiment with a work featuring Josephine Baker. Frédéric Moser and Philippe Schwinger were born, respectively, in 1966 and 1961 in Saint-Imier in Switzerland. In a small village of the former East Germany, a group of young people attempts to articulate a palpable sense of unease: their solitude and isolation, their thwarted desires to begin working, their desire to become involved in the political struggles of their era. In another part of the same village, their parents are on strike, protesting in front of the factory where they are employed. A journalist from elsewhere records the impressions of both groups, forming a fragile point of connection between two generations with nothing in common. Emilie Pitoiset was born in 1980 in Noisy Le Grand. She lives and works in Paris and Berlin. A re-edit of a sequence from an American television programme from the 1960s, similar to a hidden camera show, Mimétisme is based on a repetition of shots that open up a fictional aspect that does not initially appear in the original. Here, the editing and sound accentuate the “choreography” of the protagonists’ movements. A strangeness reinforced by the false symmetry between the two images emanates from the work. A dichotomy between the apparent violence of the image and the rich quality of the audio narration, reflected by the accelerating and decelerating movements of the protagonists. » (Texte de Raphael Brunel) Julien Prévieux was born in 1974 in Grenoble. The film Anomalies consists of a slow tracking shot on the screens of a computer room. In voiceover, two users of Google’s free modelling program “Sketchup” – which allows 3D monuments to be created in Google Earth – testify to their experiences. One describes a fan’s approach, drawing satisfaction from the IT giant’s recognition of his talent; the other, more critical, detects a form of disguised labour: “I think this time we’ve really been had. Everything was so well done – that’s right, so well done – that we didn’t even know that we were working when we were.” Florent Pugnaire and David Raffini were born respectively in 1980 and 1982. They live and work in Nice. Casse Pipe is the story of a soldier/doctor who deserts a reconstitution of a battle. The film starts in the throes of a combat opposing the Napoleon army and the Austrians. The reconstitution, marked by a desire for coherence and historical realism, becomes slowly subverted in a fictional manner. The camera starts by recording the event and is progressively drawn into the fiction, by following two doctors in the midst of artillery fire and pitched battles. Tony Regazzoni was born in 1982 and lives and works in Paris. The film Deca/Dance is based on the essential archetypes of the video clip. He draws his inspiration from the history of clips, but also from certain films by Fassbinder and from Henri Clouzot’s Inferno. His films are very “plastic”, employing sophisticated lighting and atmospheric effects. Using the specific vocabulary of contemporary festivities, whether it be that of funfairs or night clubs, Tony Regazzoni condenses a slice of life into this video, recalling the practice of celebration shared by all human beings. Jean-Claude Ruggirello was born in 1959 in Tunis. He lives and works in Paris and Marseille. Bruits de fond does not resort to the usual procedures of the crescendo: steady, metronomic, mechanical violence. This stretching of time, punctuated by various disturbances, can be found in certain videos by McCarthy, but it is more reminiscent of Beckett’s theatre, with its performative, constrained aspects. The rule of thumb imposed on the mute actor (the impassive Boris Lémant as a vacuous Buster Keaton, whose mind is elsewhere) is to destroy everything by taking as long as possible to do so, in a reversal of the usual order. It is the editing that establishes this slow pace, while skilfully avoiding any resemblance to filmed theatre. Francesco Simeti was born in 1968 in Palermo in Italy. He lives and works in New York and Palermo. Scene di Disordine e Confusion in an expression which, according to Roderick Frazier Nash, was used in the Middle Ages to define the idea of “wilderness”. Here a medieval pilgrimage through the early European landscape and its primeval forests is re-imagined in animation, based on botanical treatises and on a study of landscape paintings of the European Renaissance from Benozzo Gozzoli to Fra Angelico. The artist continues his research into the beautification and commoditization of violence; decoration, combined with images of tragic import, becomes a tool to underline this trivialization. Adam Shecter was born in Dallas in Texas in 1976. He lives and works in New York. Inspired by the science fiction novel Last and First Men by Olaf Stapledon, Last Men imagines planet Earth and its human civilisation in the far distant future via a series of both lucid vignettes and decayed visual transmissions. Using a variety of techniques – from intimate hand-drawing to heavily processed digital footage, the narrative of Last Men meanders between the subatomic and the cosmological, ultimately espousing a tale of humanity and its destiny in Shecter’s phantasmagorical method of storytelling. Martine Stig was born in 1972 in The Netherlands. In this film, the ideal city is based on anonymity: the anonymous, universal subject of “the city” itself, which administrates the comings and goings of the people within it. In the celebrated chapter “Walking in the City” in his 1980 book “The Practice of Everyday Life”, Michel de Certeau writes of the totalizing scenario imposed by urban planning, and the individual pedestrians who, rebelliously, articulate new and disorderly uses of public space. In “Play”, the artist appears to record precisely such a story. Apparently scripted by the rigid architecture of the city and its image, it nevertheless takes place everyday with no author and no spectator. Oleg Tcherny was born in Minsk in 1973. La Linea generale was filmed from a boat leaving the Venetian Lagoon for Aleppo. It transforms itself as the landscape unfolds, becoming pictorial and progressively denser, through a complex editing game based on the relativity of the displacement of one frame of reference in relation to another, and to the instability of the image captured by the digital camera. The philosopher Giorgio Agamben accompanies this voyage in time and space with the reading of a founding text by Galileo, Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems La Linea generale, 2010 (16 min) Présenté par Poggi Bertoux & Associés, Paris T.J. Wilcox orchestrates a composite musical homage using dozens of self posted YouTube renditions of three of the singer’s most famous tunes: Walkin’ After Midnight, Crazy, and Sweet Dreams. Sislej Xhafa was born in 1970 in Peja in Kosova. He lives and works in New York and in Italy. This film consists of a fixed frame: a weapon lying on the asphalt in the rain. The sound of the rain falling on the metallic surface gives it an almost aggressive character. The image leaves the field open to a variety of mental associations for the spectator. Who owns the gun? Why was it abandoned here? Was it used to kill someone? The title Passion Fruit lends even more ambiguity to the vision of this object, which is both a source of violence and fascination. While the firearm left in the rain incontestably loses its ability to kill, the idea of this potentiality remains present, suggesting a parallel story connected to violence, passion and loss. In 2010, the trio invaded the Rue de Laeken / Lakensestraat, a street in Brussels where many galleries are installed. ZimmerFrei presents the street together with its inhabitants and their premises – from the Halal Snack Bar to the cultural organisation BNA / BBOT or the office of the young architects, Rotor – giving the spectator a glimpse of their homes and their dreams. By way of small interventions, details in shop windows and commerces, the entire street is turned into a temporary installation, an invitation to (re) discover a “slice of Brussels life”. The film shows an orchestra of Sudanese refugees in Cairo. They perform a traditional song in a room plunged into darkness, to the point that we can only just make out the silhouette of one of its members. The presence of the other protagonists is suggested by the sound of the music they are playing. This work reflects the complexities of a society in transition, forced into silence by dictatorships, and whose peoples cannot recover a sense of community and freedom of expression anywhere else than within the liminal space of this theatre. Yi Zhou was born in Shanghai in 1978. The film AboutSeana shows a little nine-year old girl, whose 3D silhouette, created from a three-dimensional scan, is perceived almost as a sculpture. Symbolizing the alter ego of the artist, the little girl decomposes slowly into petals before dissolving into emptiness… Recollecting her childhood passage from China to Italy in a confused manner, Yi Zhou reminds us how much childhood memories condition our adult life, even if these childhood emotions are often subconscious. Every childhood loss leaves a scar which can resurface throughout adulthood.
