Chers Amis,
L'équipe de l'Alliance Française de Charlotte se joint à moi pour vous souhaiter une
bonne année 2016.
Notre souhait le plus cher est de vous voir nombreux assister aux activités de l'AF,
et de nous aider à offrir un programme varié et divertissant.
Nous avons eu un très bon début de saison, le méchoui, la fête des bonbons, le festival du Beaujolais, le Dîner des Fêtes, sans oublier bien sur nos cafés rencontre. Je
suis très enthousiaste à l’idée de vous revoir tous lors des événements des prochains
mois. Tout d’abord aura lieu la galette des rois suivie d'une dégustation de vin et
chocolat , ensuite une soirée Mardi Gras et une dégustation de crêpes. Ces événements ne sont que le début de notre programme de début d'année, nous vous tiendrons informés bien évidemment ! En échange de tous ces divertissements, je souhaite une chose : de vous rencontrer tous à nos événements. L’équipe et moi-même
sommes très dévoués et aimons tous profondément notre organisation, mais nous ne
pourrions et ne le ferions pas sans vous. Alors restez fidèles, continuez à venir et
invitez des amis ! En espérant vous voir de tout cœur très bientôt !

Dear friends,
The Charlotte French Alliance team joins me in wishing you a happy new year.
Our dearest wish is to see many attend the FA activities and help us provide a varied and entertaining program.
We had a very good start to the season, the barbecue, the candy party, the Beaujolais festival, the Christmas dinner, and not forgetting our cafés Rencontre. I am
very excited to see you all at the events of the coming months. First there will be
the Galette followed by a tasting of wine and chocolate, then an evening Mardi
Gras and crêpes. These events are only the beginning of our program early in the
year, and we will keep you informed of course! In exchange for all this entertainment, I want one thing : to meet you all at our events. The team and I are very
dedicated and love deeply our organization, but we could not and would not do it
without you. So stay faithful, continue to come, and invite friends! Hope to see you
very soon

Le Méchoui / The Mechoui
Bien que la journée fut été très pluvieuse sur l'île Copperhead,
cela ne nous a pas empêcher de passer un très bon moment au
Méchoui annuel de l'AFC. Ce fut le premier événement pour
nous, les Grubers, depuis que nous avons rejoint l'AFC et nous
ne pouvions commencer d'une meilleure façon. Nos deux enfants,
Silas et Maximilien, vont à Waddell Académie et sont dans le
programme d'immersion française. De plus, mes grands-parents
de Saint Quentin sont venus vivre aux États-Unis. En conséquence, il a toujours été important de garder un lien fort avec la Although it was a rainy day on Copperhead Island at

Qui ne s'est

souvenirs pour nous tous , c'est
pourquoi nous voulions les faire
partager à nos enfants.
Nous nous sommes donc retrouvé à
Fort-Mill dans un salon de thé pour
faire notre rencontre basée sur la
dégustation de bonbons . Chaque
participant, après avoir reçu un
sachet de bonbons et un de petits
gâteaux secs, devait réaliser une
fleur, un personnage, un animal et
réaliser une création libre.
Ensuite ce fut le temps de la
démonstration de la mousse au
chocolat. Les enfants furent bien
attentifs, ensuite chacun a pu goûter
un petit pot de mousse.
L'après fut riche en sucre mais
surtout les parents ont pu partager
avec leurs enfants certains souvenir
d'enfance.

Dans la soirée du 18 Novembre, 2015,
des centaines d'adultes avertis à l'échelle internationale et lycéens ont convergé vers l'Hilton de Charlotte pour pousser leurs équipes à la victoire dans la
compétition WorldQuest, et l'équipe
Alliance Française de Charlotte était
parmi eux.Le WorldQuest,qui est le
fruit de la World Affairs Council de
Charlotte (WACC), qui a depuis connu
une croissance rapide vers un phénomène national, est une compétition annuelle dans laquelle des équipes sont
invités à répondre à des questions sur
l'histoire du monde, les affaires internationales, la géographie, la culture et les
événements actuels.
Après avoir dégusté un souper énergisant fournies par WorldQuest, notre
équipe a déposé les guides d'étude et
des cartes flash et s'est mis au travail.
Cette année, il y avait sept séries de
questions : les drapeaux du monde, la
guerre de Corée, Cuba, les chapiteaux
et les monuments, les inventeurs et les
innovations qui ont changé le monde,
les négociations nucléaires, l'Iran et la
crise économique en Grèce.
On the evening of November 18, 2015, hundreds of internationally savvy adults and high school students converged on Hilton
Charlotte Center City to push their teams to victory in the local
WorldQuest competition, and the Alliance Francaise of Charlotte
team was among them. WorldQuest, the brainchild of the World
Affairs Council of Charlotte (WACC) that has since rapidly
grown to a nationwide phenomenon, is an annual competition in
which teams are challenged with questions on world history, international affairs, geography, culture, and current events.
After enjoying an energizing spaghetti dinner provided by the WorldQuest, our team laid down its study
guides and flash cards and got down
to business. This year’s seven rounds
of questions covered world flags, the
Korean War, Cuba, capitals and landmarks, inventors and innovations that changed the world, Iran nuclear talks, and the
Greece economic crisis. Larry Sprinkle, weather anchor for
WCNC Channel 36, emceed the evening’s competition and also
kept the atmosphere light and fun. And while the Alliance Francaise team members did not take home first prize, we can be
proud that they put up a good fight.

Lucie Bridgland, Monique Caselli, Rob Laumann Art McDonald, Marie Muller, Charlie Patterson, and Jon Vague.

compétition de la soirée et a également gardé l'atmosphère légère et amusante. Et même si les membres de l'équipe de l'Alliance Française n'ont pas
remporté le premier prix, nous pouvons être fiers de leur combativité.

22ème FESTIVAL DU BEAUJOLAIS
L’événement le plus attendu de l’année…
Tel était l’annonce faite par l’Alliance Française pour ce
22ème Festival du Beaujolais, et effectivement, la fête était
à la hauteur des attentes. Le 20 novembre 2015, de très
nombreux invités se retrouvaient dans les salons magnifiques de Burwell Hall, au sein de Queens University of
Charlotte, pour fêter comme il se doit le Beaujolais Nouveau. Cette année, la soirée fut animée par un parcours de
dégustation en huit étapes (du beaujolais blanc au rouge, en
passant par le rosé), permettant à chacun d’apprécier des
vins de cette région. Une région qui est nous est chère, puisque nous sommes installés dans le Beaujolais depuis 20
ans, avant d’arriver à Charlotte en avril dernier ! Nous avons même pu gouter des vins provenant d’un producteur
habitant à St. Laurent d’Oingt, à seulement quelques kilomètres de notre village ! Un buffet garni accompagnait la
dégustation, et tout en le savourant, les invités pouvaient découvrir une grande sélection de produits offerts pour
une vente aux enchères silencieuse. Des mélodies de jazz proposées par The Tenya Colemon Duo ainsi que John
Alexander et quelques chansons françaises poussées par des compères du Men Choir
complétaient cette ambiance chaleureuse. Nous gardons un très bon souvenir de notre
premier Festival du Beaujolais à Charlotte et attendons avec impatience le cru 2016 !

The most anticipated event of the year…

This was how the 22nd Beaujolais Festival was announced by the Alliance Française, and quite rightly, as the
celebration matched even the highest of expectations. Last November 20 th, a large number of guests gathered in
the magnificent rooms of Burwell Hall, part of Charlotte’s Queens University complex, to do justice to the
Beaujolais Nouveau. This year, the evening was organized around an 8-stop wine tasting itinerary (from the
Beaujolais whites to the reds, not forgetting the “rosés”), allowing guests to taste a variety of wines from this
region. A region that is close to our hearts, as we lived there for 20 years before moving to Charlotte last April !
We even got to taste some wines from a producer living in St. Laurent d’Oingt, only a few miles from our village ! While enjoying the wines, and also a copious buffet, the guests could also choose to bid for one of the lots
donated to the silent auction. Live jazz music by par The
Tenya Colemon Duo and John Alexander Trio and some
French singing by Men Choir added to the warm and friendly
atmosphere. We thoroughly enjoyed our first Beaujolais Festival in
Charlotte and look forward to the 2016 edition !

So here's a little recap on the café rencontre this morning avec a little game so some

Six Yule Logs, each of them looking nicer than the others,

this has been our recipe for a very successful Yule Logs
Contest on the Saint Nicolas’day of 2015 !
We were quite a lot to gather around the very fine and traditional Yule Logs baked by some of our members (a
huge, huge thank you to all of you !). Chef Sylvain Rivet
of Renaissance Patisserie and his friend ------------- attended the event and mastered the contest… We tasted the
six Yule Logs, with spoons, we gave scores on detailed
notes cards, and elected the best Yule Log ! The three
winners won very nice prices… The kids, between two
spoonful of Yule Logs, had great time with Christmas
crafts, it was a very festive event ! We also had a wonderful time with Chef Sylvain Rivet’s demonstration of preparing a Yule Log, he even gave us tips so we can now
prepare a Yule Log ourselves at home ! A tasting of the
Yule Log followed, of course, the demonstration… What
a very friendly, festive and sweet event !
Six bûches, toutes plus belles les unes que
les autres, un Chef Pâtissier et son acolyte
d’une grande générosité, un public nombreux et enthousiaste, telle a été la recette
d’un concours de bûches particulièrement
réussi en ce jour de la Saint Nicolas 2015 !
Nous avons été nombreux à nous retrouver
autours des bûches préparées avec beaucoup de finesse et de tradition par certains
de nos membres (un grand, grand merci à

Pâtisserie nous avait rejoint pour l’événement et a conduit avec son ami ------------le concours de bûches… Dégustation donc,
à la cuillère, des six bûches, notations personnelles sur des fiches détaillées, puis
élection de la meilleure des bûches ! Avec
pour les trois gagnants, des prix sympathiques… Les enfants ont aussi, entre deux
bouchées de bûches, passé un bon moment
avec des activités de Noël, l’ambiance était
à la fête ! Puis, grand moment également de
cet événement, la démonstration de Chef
Sylvain Rivet du montage d’une bûche de
Noël, avec toutes les astuces données pour
pouvoir chez soi faire sa propre bûche de
Noël ! Cette démonstration a bien évidemment été suivie… de la dégustation de la
bûche, un après-midi très convivial, festif et
gourmand à souhait !

ROIS ET REINES A GOGO
L’Alliance Française avait organisé le Dimanche 10 Janvier une fort agréable réunion afin de fêter l’Epiphanie et
de déguster, comme c’est la coutume, une galette des
Rois. Céline Thiria, et Cécile Villemin Richardeau ont
accueilli avec leur charme et courtoisie habituelles une
soixantaine des membres de l’Alliance accompagnés de
leurs enfants. La grande salle de l’Eglise Méthodiste de
Myers Park se prêtait bien aux papotages des adultes ainsi
qu’aux ébats des jeunes qui en ont profité pour faire
connaissance et devenir amis pour la vie. Une délicieuse
galette des rois préparée par Sylvain Rivet de la pâtisserie Renaissance fut servie généreusement à tous, et chacun
a mangé sa part avec délicatesse afin de ne pas avaler la
« fève » ou petite figurine contenue dans chaque galette.
Plusieurs couronnes de carton doré ont bien vite garni les
têtes des heureux rois et reines. Une excellente façon de
passer un après-midi de Janvier froid et gris à Charlotte.
LONG LIVE QUEENS AND KINGS !
The Alliance Française of Charlotte organized on January 10 a very pleasant get together for its members, in a large meeting space located in the Myers Park Methodist
Church to celebrate “Epiphany”, French style. All celebrations the “ French way” are
always associated with good food, in this case the partaking of the “Galette des Rois” or
Kings Cake, a delicious confection of puff pastry and almond cream filling. Céline
Thiria and Cecile Villemin Richardeau were the gracious and efficient hostesses to
about sixty Alliance members and their children. Guests ate their galette, expertly prepared by pastry Chef Sylvain of Renaissance Bakery, delicately to avoid swallowing
the trinket hidden in each cake, which meant that if you found a small porcelain ornament in your serving you became instant royalty and a “gold” crown was placed on the
lucky monarch’s head. A delightful way to reconnect with friends, meet new ones, and
spend a cold and grey afternoon in Charlotte.

So for most of us who are news junkies (gourmand d'infos ) there is of course the TV5 website with regularly updated editions as well as those available through TF1,
France 2, and France 3 as well as the very thorough France 24 with
continuous programming. Anything for kids ? yes, lots; Caillou,
Tintin, even old americain shows dubbed in French (Lassie, Flipper,
even superman!) If you're a foodie here again lots to chose from- I
like Les Carnets de Julie not only for the insights on recipes but also
like a travelogue since she is always on the move throughout
France searching out good food and good cooks. Also Les Escapades de Petitrenaud (Jean Luc looks out for "une bonne table/
chef"), Then we have Guy Martin's Epicerie Fine for an indepth look
at a particular food ; there are also lesser known chefs with youtube sites: Herve Cuisine or L'atelier de Roxane. Also available are certain shows of Dans La Peau d'un Chef
where 2 contestants try to replicate a chef's creation. If you enjoy nature shows here again quite a lot to
see and of quite good quality; Helene et Les Animaux (also enjoyable for children) ,Thalassa ( what's happening along the coast of France and also its waterways (one of my favorites). La France Sauvage is presented in a documentary form (think National Geographic) For news magazines, there's Le Point
(Quebecois) as well as France 2's Envoye Special,/ Complement d'enquete /Cash Investigation. For travel
magazines here again lots to choose from: Des Racines et des

(or a lot less) cerebral Tout le monde veut prendre sa place (for general trivia and silliness) and N'oubliez
pas les Paroles ! for karaoke style and usually quite good sing alongs for a bit of French music nostalgia. And
lastly if you like French music you only have to type in the name of the artist in the search tab and you will
come up with untold volumes of videos-I prefer the silly sixties myselfmy favorites tend to be Francoise Hardy (Tout les garcons et les filles de
mon age or La maison ou j'ai grandi) Michel Delpeche who recently
passed away (Pour un Flirt) or Johnny Hallyday (Oh Ma Jolie Sarah!)
watch this one because here Mon Cher Johnny is in various Elvis costumes per the vid-worth checking out for the hoot of it,you'll be doing
the twist before you know it! Lastly, some here and there type in just
about any tv show you can think of then put "en francais" and you'll
probably come up with something with the exception of" Bewitched "careful,it was renamed "Ma sorciere bien aimee". Otherwise I have
found episodes of Star Trek ,Greys Anatomy, CSI, etc, and for fans of
soaps some clips are available like The Young and the Restless (Les Feux
de l'Amour) or The Bold and the Beautiful (Top Modeles) as well as
countless other American tv shows dubbed in French, to keep you very busy for a real long time... Enjoy
