732-10-01 and -03 background and proposal
Proposal to revise IEV 732-10-01 "home network" and IEV 732-10-03 "application protocol" Revisions to IEV 732-10-01:2014-01 "home network" and IEV 732-10-03: 2014-01 "application protocol" were proposed by Prof. Erik Jacobson to ACOS (the authors of IEC Guide 110, which is the source of these entries). ACOS subsequently informed us that these definitions were derived from JTC 1/SC 25/WG 1, and suggested they be consulted as the original "owner" of these definitions. The proposed revisions below have been agreed with JTC 1/SC 25/WG 1, and a copy has been sent to ACOS. Justifications for revision and some discussion IEV 732-10-01: 2014-01 "home network" 1. The concept of “network” is defined in the IEV consistently in several contexts; in accordance with these entries, the concepts of an “internal network” and an "external network" cannot be defined. A home network is a specialized LAN. Analogue data are likely to be digitized at a node before being sent on a home network. A point-topoint analogue connection, such as a thermostat link to a furnace, is not considered as part of a home network. A home network may be connected to an external network such as a wide area network (WAN) via a gateway, as specified in the ISO/IEC 15045 series. 2. Information (IEV 101-12-01) cannot have attributes like analogue or digital; this is possible only for data (IEV 101-12-03). 3. The concept of “transport” is restricted to material. “Exchange” is used for communication. 4. "single family dwelling or business premises of similar complexity " is imprecise: "complexity" is not a defined term, and "similar complexity" is vague. IEV 732-10-03: 2014-01 "application protocol" 1. The term "protocol" is defined in IEV 716-01-17 as "a defined set of procedures adopted to ensure communication between sets of processes ...", and in IEV 351-5614 as a "set of rules for data transmission ...". In no case is a "protocol" a "language", although a protocol can be expressed in a suitable language. The concept concerns layer 7 of the OSI Reference Model for Communications (ISO 7498) of a communications protocol that uses a home network. Therefore the term is incorrect and needs to be revised. 2. In the NOTE, it would be too much a restriction, that the information must not be interpreted by the home network resources; most important is that the information is not altered. 3. The concept is a fundamental concept. In the future, a proposal will be made to transfer it to IEV 171 (under development). 4. The definition has been reworded in order to be general and to refer, where possible, to concepts already defined in the IEV. SOURCE: IEC Guide 110:1996, 2.3, modified – The explanation concerning the information has been transferred to Note 1 to entry, and "It" has been replaced by "The information". 732-10-03 application language formal communications language specified at the application layer and transported by an application protocol (IEV 732-10-03) Note 1 to entry: The application layer is defined as layer 7 of the open systems interconnection (OSI) reference model (IEV 716-01-20). Note 2 to entry: An application language is specified with a syntax and semantics; the application layer includes procedures for exchanging messages that are encoded using this language. protocole d'application, m langage normalisé utilisé par les processus d'application pour échanger des informations dans un système domestique de commande Note 1 à l'article: L'information est transportée sans interprétation par les ressources du réseau domestique.
