ACTING CAPTAIN SYLVESTER MAJ
TORONTO (ON) FIRE SERVICES
Acting Captain Sylvester Maj died from a work-related illness on July 14, 2011.
He joined the fire service in 1991.
Le Capitaine p. i.
Sylvester John Maj, “Sly” as he liked being called by his friends and colleagues began his “dream job” in
April of 1991 when he joined the TFD. Shortly before his death, he moved up to Acting Captain and was
ecstatic about it. Sly’s jobs always required wearing a uniform: a Correctional Officer at Metro West
Detention Centre where he worked with young offenders right before joining the fire department; an
armoured guard for Loomis / Securicor (over 10 years part-time); a senior mining engineer for 11 years
with a masters in explosives in his native Poland . Sly was a man of many interests. He loved reading
books, doing Sudoku and sports such as sailing, karate and especially skydiving (having over 1,200
jumps and training Special Forces). He was my skydiving instructor and 2 years later, a husband
for almost 26 years; a father to our 3 daughters: Paulina, Emily (Gem) and Margaret. He will be
remembered forever.

FIREFIGHTER DAVE HILL
CFB ESQUIMALT (BC) FIRE RESCUE
Firefighter Dave Hill died from a work-related illness on August 23, 2012. He joined
the fire service in 1987.
Dave first started his firefighting career by joining the Langford Volunteer Fire Department in 1987.
He was hired on with CFB Esquimalt Fire Rescue on September 1st 1988. Dave was very passionate
and dedicated to his department which was very apparent as he was one of the fire department’s master
EMS instructors/trainers. Dave often took the new recruits in under his wing and mentored them. Dave
was always the first to organize a donation drive to assist those affected by any type of disaster whether it
was natural or manmade. It didn’t matter if it was in his local community or on the other side of the
world. Dave was always determined to help. Dave will be fondly remembered for his infectious smile,
terrific sense of humor, love of practical jokes and his dedication to his beloved Terry Fox run. You could
never miss Dave; whether it was at the fire hall or on the baseball field, his “booming umpire voice” was
an indication that he was present. Dave had an extreme love for Christmas and his Christmas spirit was
nothing short of contagious. Dave led his department to three consecutive first-place finishes in the local
Christmas Fire Truck parade. Dave will be forever loved and missed by all who were blessed to have met
him, especially his loving wife Jody, daughter Courtney and son David.
“Heroes get remembered, legends never die.” Until we meet again, pleasant dreams and lots of ‘em

CAPTAIN DAVID CARTMEL
BRANTFORD (ON) FIRE DEPT.
Captain David Cartmel died from a work-related illness on September 3, 2012.
He joined the fire service in 1986.
From a young age, Dave dreamt about becoming a firefighter. His dream became reality in January 1986.
As a result of his dedicated efforts, he was promoted to Captain on September 5, 2006. Dave was very
proud to be part of the firefighter family and loved mentoring the junior members, sharing both his knowledge and passion unconditionally. Dave enjoyed his time away from the hall spending time with his wife
Debbie and their two sons, Ben and Matt, who he was so very proud of. Amongst his friends and family,
Dave was the "go to guy" when something needed fixing. Anyone who knew Dave knew he wasn't
afraid of work. Dave Cartmel was a respected firefighter, a man's man, an outstanding husband and a
dedicated father. Simply put he was the best of the best. Dave would be humbled and honoured to be
recognized at this year's memorial ceremony.
FIREFIGHTER RANDY BURCH
TORONTO (ON) FIRE SERVICES
Firefighter Randall (Randy) Burch died from a work-related illness on November 12,
2012. He joined the fire service in 1986.
Randy served Toronto Fire Services proudly and enthusiastically, beginning prior to amalgamation, with
the Etobicoke Fire Department. His number 407 from those early days remains special to us. Randy was
such a happy, positive and talented person. He gave 100% to everything he did, always. If anyone was
in need of help, Randy would jump in with the right tools and an action plan! Randy thoroughly enjoyed
life; he loved to fish and hunt, played multiple sports, was an avid supporter and coach of his daughter's
soccer teams, and made time to share is immense building skills both at home and in cottage country
with his dear friends and colleagues. He was also a perfectionist in the kitchen and everyone looked
forward to his soups and Caesar salad, and if you were lucky, you would get his Christmas shortbreads!
Randy inspired us all by finding ways to remain positive, giving and loving even as he endured the
challenges of his illness. He appeared in the TFS Mask Up safety training video hoping to make a
difference for others. He was a wonderful, caring husband to Edith for 29 years. Randy’s spirit of
generosity, enthusiasm for life and the confidence to rise to life’s challenges lives on in his two beautiful
daughters, Madeline and Julia of whom he was so very proud. Randy would be highly honored by the
memorial ceremony. He is missed by his many friends, his parents Bob and Eleanor Burch, siblings Blair,
Rob, Rick, Lynn and their families, and his entire in-law family with love and incredible appreciation
for all he did for us during our privileged time with him. Randy, you "finished your life" as the straight
shooter you always were; with bravery and dignity. We thank you for "keeping watch" over us always.

LIEUTENANT JOHN MAVITY
STRATFORD (ON) FIRE DEPT.
Lieutenant John Mavity died from a work related illness on January 30, 2013.
He joined the fire service in 1985.
John or "Mav" as he was known by everyone was a proud and passionate member of the Stratford Fire
Dept. for over 27 years. John loved being a firefighter and easily took on the role of mentor to many of the
young men starting out their careers. His lifelong love of hockey was only surpassed by his love and
dedication to his family. John was a graduate of Bowling Green University where he received a full
hockey scholarship and played for the Varsity Falcons hockey team. He was a humble man who could light
up a room with his smile and sense of humour. John leaves behind his son Jake, his stepson Keegan, his
loving wife, Laurie and her daughters and grand-daughters Shannon, Ellie(11), Ayden(6), Jill(Adam),
Lainey(2), and Talia (1), whom he never got to meet. He was predeceased by his precious daughter, Ali,
in 2002.
Missing him every day. xo
FIREFIGHTER MARTIN WALSH
KENNETCOOK DISTRICT (NS) FIRE DEPT.
Volunteer Firefighter Martin Walsh died responding to a fire on April 11, 2013.
He joined the fire service in 1976.
Martin’s volunteer career began with the Beaver Bank-Kinsac Volunteer Fire Department in 1976 where
he moved up the ranks to become their Deputy Fire Chief. After transferring in 1986 to the Kennetcook &
District Volunteer Fire Department, he proudly served in positions of Training Officer, Deputy Fire Chief,
and most notably, 10 years as Fire Chief. He gave his time freely and never missed a call if he was in
the area - no matter if company was at the dinner table, he was at church, or on the way to a social
gathering. He loved what he was doing and was always one of the last to leave a fire scene. Over the years
Martin also dedicated time to other community services like the Boy Scouts, Ground Search and Rescue,
Lions International, and the Kennetcook United Church. He was a proud, caring, and compassionate
person who would always stop and help those in need wherever he could (always thinking of others before
himself). Martin is missed being seen daily in his orange coveralls as he was always doing some job in the
village of Kennetcook. He was a quiet spoken man with a wonderful sense of humor – just ask the girls
at the Kennetcook Freshmart. Martin leaves behind his loving wife of 42 years, Valerie; twin sister, Marna
(Al); sister, Noreen (Kevin); very close friends, Vaughn & Marie Cantwell and their children Nicholas
and Lindsey whom he loved as if they were his own; brothers-in-law Ross (Joy), David (Susan), Alan
(Karen), and Brian (Jean). The day you left us a void was made that will never be filled quite the same.
Martin was a dedicated firefighter to the end. We’ll love and miss him always - Valerie and pets (Shep,
Cindy and Heidi).

CAPTAIN JON ENANDER
LETHBRIDGE (AB) FIRE DEPT.
Captain Jon Enander died from a work related illness on April 28, 2013. He joined the
fire service in 1979.
Jon joined the Lethbridge Fire Department in September 1979. He moved up the ranks and became a
captain in March 2009. Jon loved being a firefighter and really cared about his “guys”. He had a
wonderful work ethic. Jon never took a sick day in his first 30 years on the job. He did everything with
excellence, in his personal life and at work. Jon was a loving husband, father, father-in-law, friend and
co-worker, always looking out for others before himself. He was an encourager with a great sense of humor
that he often used to diffuse tense situations with great success. This was reflected in his many lifelong
friendships he had formed in and out of work. Jon loved to go camping in the mountains every chance he
got. He was an avid Blue Jays fan and enjoyed driving his ’66 Chevelle.
DEPUTY FIRE CHIEF ANTONIUS LIPPERS
CALEDON (ON) FIRE & EMERGENCY SERVICES
Deputy Fire Chief Antonius “Tony” Lippers died from a work related illness on
May 22, 2013. He joined the fire service in 1985.
Tony was a devoted and loving husband, father, dear friend and colleague. He was a true professional
and a respected Fire Officer. Tony’s 28 year career spanned service in Ajax, Little Britain, Orillia,
Chatham-Kent and Caledon. Tony served as a Firefighter, Chief Fire Prevention Officer, Assistant
Chief and Deputy Fire Chief. Wherever he worked and whatever he did, those who worked closest with
Tony quickly discovered his attention to detail, his willingness to serve others, his dedication to his
profession - his people - his friends and his family, whom he loved, and his love of life – which he enjoyed
so much.
Tony’s contributions to community safety included participating in working groups for Fire Code
revision and amendment. Tony had a gift and natural ability for code interpretation. If you had a
fire-prevention or fire-safety problem, Tony had a Fire Code solution. He had an infectious laugh;
sometimes he’d laugh so hard at a joke he was about to tell you that you were already laughing. Tony
always was the encourager; he would help anybody, anywhere, anytime. Tony did things right and he
lived life well. Everyone who has worked with Tony has learned from him, both personally and professionally. In everything that Tony did, it was equally important for him to do the right thing, and to do
things right. We rarely saw Tony having a bad day. He was always smiling and little got him down. He
was always forward thinking with a positive attitude. Tony, you are greatly missed each and every day.
God broke our hearts to prove to us that He only takes the best away! We love you Tony! You are in our
hearts, souls and memories forever! Until we meet again. XO XO

FIRE WARDEN GEORGE JONES
BC WILDFIRE MANAGEMENT BRANCH
Fire Warden George Jones died at a fire on July 12, 2013. He joined the fire service in 1995.
George started his career in 1986 working for Ministry of Forests at the Port Alberni Forest District office,
which is now the South Island Forest District. His duties included: field security for projects, forest fire
fighting, Fire Warden Patrols, Camp Manager, Logistics support and prescribed burn projects in spring,
summer and fall. George then went into the contracting business to deliver seedlings directly from the
nursery to jobsites on Vancouver Island. In summer and fall George would change out the seedling
container for his 1,200-gal tanker unit and support forest fire activity. In the fall he would help with
prescribed burns. In the mid 1990’s, the need for prescribed burns diminished and George switched to fire
warden patrol duties and drove Tender #2 for the Mid Island Zone and Coastal Fire Centre. He would
also drive the Coastal Fire Center’s mobile command unit ‘Big Red’ to remote fires and manage logistics
and camp functions when on scene. At times, George was kept busy keeping everyone in line. He was a
highly reliable individual who could alleviate most Initial Attack water delivery issues for fires on
Southern Vancouver Island. He also fostered a positive attitude and work ethic for young firefighters.
Many young firefighters looked up to him and for those who got to know him well, he was always a relief
to see at a fire. Whenever George showed up, you knew that the one thing that was taken care of was
getting water to the fire. George died on Fire V70193. George will be sorely missed.

ABOUT THE FOUNDATION
©
The Education Endowment Fund
provides scholarships and bursaries to the
children and spouses of Canadian firefighters whose
line of duty death has been recognized by the
Foundation. Several bursaries and a scholarship will
be awarded each year. The Foundation’s ultimate
goal is to provide education assistance to every child
of a fallen firefighter. The current full Scholarship is
named after former Treasurer Doug Lock who
spearheaded the introduction of the program and
passed away in 2012.
he Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation is
a registered, non-profit charitable organization dedicated to honouring Canada’s fallen
firefighters. The Foundation honours all types of
firefighters whether volunteer/part-time, paid/full
time, industrial, military, urban, rural, wildland,
airport, or marine. The Foundation’s directors, who
volunteer their time, include members from all areas
of the Canadian Fire Service as well as representatives
from the business community.
T
The objectives of the Foundation are:
•
To operate the
Canadian Firefighters
Annual Memorial
Ceremony and update
the memorial wall.
•
To provide financial
subsidies to families
of fallen firefighters
for transportation
to and lodging in
Ottawa during the
memorial weekend.
•
To provide scholarships
and bursaries for the
children and spouses of
firefighters whose line of
duty death is recognized
by the Foundation.
The Canadian Firefighters Memorial was completed
in 2012 and dedicated by the Governor General of
Canada on September 9, 2012. The new monument
honours over 1100 Canadian firefighters who died
in the line of duty serving their communities since
1848. While the Foundation has now reached all of
its initial goals laid out in 2004, the work is not
over. The Foundation will now begin to broaden
its assistance to the families of fallen firefighters
while continuing to honour them at the annual
national ceremony.
Since 2004, the Foundation has operated the ceremony
with the assistance of Fire Services and organizations
from across Canada acting as honorary hosts in Ottawa
who represent the Canadian Fire Service with pride.
The cost of running a large scale ceremony is daunting
and the Foundation would like to thank all of our past
and current sponsors for supporting this event. The
Foundation operates solely on fundraising from private
donations, local fundraising events, and sponsorships
from the business community.

d’une cérémonie de cette envergure en est un important;
enregistré, à but non lucratif, vouée à rendre

which also acts as a lightning rod. The Foundation’s
motto, “Never to be Forgotten”, is engraved on the

which symbolize Canada. Plantings, which turn red

crews who fight devastating forest fires in Canada.

The Foundation’s goal was reached with the assistance of

T
This location of the Canadian Firefighters Memorial
(CFM) is significant in the fire history of our nation’s
capital as it is the area where the Ottawa-Hull conflagration of 1900 crossed over from Hull on the morning
of April 26, 1900 after destroying 1300 buildings.
On the Ottawa side of the river the fire razed 1400
buildings and killed seven. At the end of the day the
fire was stopped from spreading downtown near the
exact spot where the monument is located. The site is
also close to where Captain John Lowry of the Ottawa
Fire Department was killed in the line of duty on
August 12, 1896 on Booth Street.
Another unique aspect of the CFM includes the use of
old brass hose couplings in the production of some of
the bronze elements. Fire departments from across
Canada each sent one hose coupling; a piece of their
history, to the foundry to be used as part of the
Memorial. Parts of the finished bronze elements of the
memorial actually have a piece of many departments
from across Canada, making it truly national.
The design “We Were There” by the team of artist
Douglas Coupland and landscape architect Mary
Tremain of PLANT Architects includes a large
bronze statue of a firefighter who has returned to
earth from heaven via a sixty-foot high fire pole to
point out the names of his fallen comrades on a
memorial wall. The memorial wall, in the abstract
shape of Canada, contains the names of all fallen
firefighters randomly in cloud like formations
roughly over the area of Canada near where they
died. Firefighters who died together are listed beside
each other. A lone pine tree, planted in a significant

HONOUR – REMEMBER – SUPPORT
Over 1100 Canadian Firefighters have died in the line of duty since the first recorded casualty in 1848.
The Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation exists to be sure they and those who come after them
are never forgotten. The Foundation manages this Canadian Firefighters Annual Memorial Ceremony
and has created an endowment fund
to support scholarships and
bursaries for the children and
spouses of those firefighters.

Please make a donation
today so they will…
never be forgotten!
HONNEUR – SOUVENIR – SOUTIEN
