Melanie Demers is a courageous new voice in Canadian dance. Her work is profoundly theatrical and vitally
provocative with subjects that place her politics at centre stage. With Junkyard Paradise she highlights the
inherent contradictions of everyday life. In a stage filled with props and costumes, the dancers explore a
garden of extremes: beauty and atrocity, love and hate, excess and scarcity.
An artist with a distinct point of view, Demers named her company Mayday – evocatively capturing the panic
of the present state of the world with a simultaneous hope for the future. Her cry for help is one that should
to be heard.
Mélanie Demers est une nouvelle voix courageuse dans le paysage de la danse au Canada. Son œuvre est
profondément théâtrale et percutante, abordant des sujets où ses conceptions politiques occupent une place
centrale. Dans Junkyard/Paradis, elle met en relief les contradictions inhérentes à la vie quotidienne. Sur une
scène débordant de costumes et d’accessoires, les danseurs explorent un jardin semé d’extrêmes : beauté et
atrocité, amour et haine, excès et rareté.
Affichant un point de vue très personnel, Demers a appelé sa compagnie Mayday. Elle rappelle ainsi l’état
lamentable du monde actuel, tout en évoquant en même temps un espoir pour l’avenir. Son appel à l’aide
mérite d’être entendu.
