Immediately on the doors being opened,
Hon. Mr. Campbell said: before the House
proceeds to business, I desire to refer to a
painful circumstance which, I am sure, everyone is already aware of: that a very severe
affliction has overtaken the Speaker of this
House and his family. I am confident I express
the sympathy which prevails in the minds of
every honourable gentleman present, and I
think we should offer the Speaker every opportunity of uniting with his family in paying that
tribute of respect which he must wish to pay
under the circumstances. Before making the
motion I intend to offer, I beg to inform honourable gentlemen that I have made myself
acquainted with the fact that the public business will not suffer by a short adjournment. I
have learned that no measures of importance
are likely to come up between today and the
time I propose that the House shall adjourn to.
Such being the case, I trust that the Senate will
agree to the motion which I now make, that
when the House adjourns today, it do stand
adjourned until Tuesday evening next, at half
past seven o'clock.

Campbell dit: Avant que la Chambre n'entame
ses travaux, je désire faire mention d'une circonstance pénible, que tous ici connaissent certainement déjà: je veux parler du grand malheur qui afflige le président du Sénat et sa
famille. Je suis certain d'exprimer la sympathie profonde qu'éprouve chacun des honorables sénateurs ici présents, et je pense que nous
devrions laisser au Président toutes les chances
de s'unir à sa famille dans l'accomplissement
des derniers devoirs que lui dictent les circonstances. Avant de passer à la motion que je
souhaite présenter, je désirerais assurer les
sénateurs que les affaires d'intérêt public ne
souffriront pas d'un court ajournement. Je
crois pouvoir dire qu'il est peu probable qu'une
mesure importante doive être adoptée durant
le délai d'ajournement que je propose à la
Chambre. Considérant ce fait, je suis certain
que le Sénat agréera la motion que je lui propose maintenant, à savoir que lorsque le Sénat
s'ajournera aujourd'hui, il demeure ajourné
jusqu'à mardi prochain, sept heures et demi du
soir.
Hon. Mr. Letellier de St Just seconded the
motion, and said that the Speaker had assuredly the sympathy of the House in his sad
bereavement.
L'honorable M. Letellier de St Just appuie
la motion et dit que la sympathie de la Chambre est acquise au Président dans le deuil qui le
touche.
The House then adjourned on motion of Hon.
Mr. Campbell.
