The General Manager of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and
Malaria recently visited the UNOPS programme in Myanmar, where we
manage $60.56 million worth of Global Fund grants. Gabriel Jaramillo
travelled to the country to discuss the progress in the fight against the
three diseases and together with UNOPS attended the opening of two
renovated warehouses for medical supplies.

UNOPS is one of two Principal Recipients for the Global Fund in Myanmar, with the
mandate to coordinate and oversee the implementation of grants.
Mr. Jaramillo also met with the Minister of Health and the Nobel Peace Prize winner
and leader of the National League for Democracy, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, to discuss
the Global Fund’s work.

In 2011, UNOPS became one of two Principal Recipients of Global Fund in Myanmar,
with the mandate to coordinate and administer grants for both prevention and
treatment of the three diseases.
In Myanmar, the partnership has distributed more than 4.2 million condoms free of
charge to individuals most at risk of contracting HIV/AIDS, and over 213,000 new TB

patients have received treatment, with a success rate of 85.5 percent. More than
1,400,000 insecticide treated nets were procured and more than 777,000 patients
treated for malaria.
In addition to our role in Myanmar, UNOPS oversees, verifies, and reports on grant
performance in fourteen countries on behalf of the Global Fund. UNOPS has also
partnered with the Global Fund in a procurement capacity in India, successfully
preventing a syringe shortage crisis in the national immunization programme, and
infrastructure work in Indonesia, where UNOPS supported a hospital and laboratory
modernization project.

HIV/AIDS, TB, and malaria and a major reason for the progress of the past 10 years,”
said David Shimkus, UNOPS Global Practice Lead for health. “UNOPS is proud of our

access to care for underserved people.”

M. Jaramillo a également rencontré le ministre de la Santé ainsi que la lauréate du prix
Nobel de la paix et dirigeante de la Ligue nationale pour la démocratie Daw Aung San
Suu Kyi afin de discuter du travail effectué par le Fonds mondial.
En 2011, l’UNOPS est devenu l’un des deux principaux bénéficiaires du Fonds mondial
au Myanmar et a pour mandat de coordonner et de gérer les subventions à la fois pour
la prévention et le traitement des trois maladies.
Au Myanmar, ce partenariat a permis la distribution gratuite de plus de 4,2 millions de
préservatifs à la population la plus exposée au risque de contracter le VIH/sida de
même que le traitement de plus de 213 000 patients atteints de tuberculose, avec un
taux de réussite de 85,5 pour cent. Plus de 1 400 000 moustiquaires traitées à
l’insecticide ont été achetées et plus de 777 000 patients ont été traités contre le
paludisme.
Outre la fonction qu’il remplit au Myanmar, l’UNOPS contrôle, surveille et établit des
rapports sur les résultats des subventions dans quatorze pays pour le compte du
Fonds mondial. L’UNOPS a également signé un partenariat avec le Fonds mondial
portant sur les capacités d’achats en Inde, ce qui a permis d’éviter une pénurie de
seringues dans le cadre du programme national d’immunisation, de même qu'un
partenariat relatif à des travaux d'infrastructures en Indonésie, où l’UNOPS a soutenu
un projet de modernisation d'un hôpital et d'un laboratoire.
« Le Fonds mondial est la source de financement la plus importante au monde en
matière de lutte contre le VIH/sida, la tuberculose et le paludisme, et il a joué un rôle
prépondérant dans les progrès réalisés lors des 10 dernières années », affirme David
