WASHINGTON DC USA -- PHARMA UPDATE NEWS SERVICE™ -- MARCH 30, 2012: Highly respected OIG Chief Counsel Lew Morris, Esq. will retire on April 1, 2012. Mr. Morris will be replaced by Gregory Demske, who is assistant IG for legal affairs. Demske has been with the counsel's office since September 1990, when he was hired as a staff attorney. He became chief of the administrative and civil remedies branch in October 2002 and assistant IG for legal affairs in 2005. LEW MORRIS: Lewis Morris was the Chief Counsel in the Office of Inspector General, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. In that capacity, Mr. Morris oversaw a staff of 70 professionals who provide the full range of legal services to the Inspector General and OIG. These services includes guidance on personnel matters, advice on the legal sufficiency of OIG's audits and evaluations, and assistance in the investigation and resolution of health care fraud cases, including cases prosecuted under criminal, civil and administrative authorities. He was also responsible for deciding whether to exclude a health care provider from participation in the Federal and State Health care programs, as well as negotiating the imposition of corporate integrity agreements in cases where the decision has been made not to seek exclusion. As part of the OIG's effort to promote compliance with program requirements, Mr. Morris oversaw the issuance of the compliance program guidances, advisory opinions and other assistance to the health care industry. Prior to serving as the Chief Counsel and during a 25 year career in the OIG, Mr. Morris has been the Assistant Inspector General for Legal Affairs, the Inspector General's Special Prosecutor, the Deputy General Counsel and a trial attorney. He also has served as a Special Assistant United States Attorney for the Middle District of Florida, the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia. He is on the board of directors of the American Health Lawyers Association and a former member of the board of the Health Care Compliance Association.
