PASSIVE VOICE
The Passive Voice – What is it?
A verb is said to be passive when the action it describes is done to its subject
e.g. the thief was arrested by the police.
The direct object of the verb in the active – ‘the police arrested the thief’
becomes the subject of the verb in the passive, and the subject of the active
becomes the agent of the passive.
The agent is the person or the thing which does the action. It is usually
introduced by par (or de) but can also be omitted.
The passive is retained in French when you have the notion of something
being done (rather than someone doing it).
e.g. 600 personnes ont été blessées durant l’explosion d’hier.
Formation
The French passive is made of ETRE + PAST PARTICIPLE which agrees
with the passive subject.

Note
A verb can only be turned into the passive if it takes, in the active, a direct
object.
e.g. they tested the samples = the samples were tested (by them)
but
an idea occurred to him = cannot put in passive as indirect object

Avoiding the passive
In some cases, you may be able to avoid the passive when using one of the
following constructions:
1. On + Active Verb when the agent is not mentioned
e.g.
I was brought to the hospital
I was told to stay there
I was asked to wait for the doctor
I was then invited to have something to eat
2. Active Sentence when the agent is mentioned
e.g.
the police arrested the thief
