La Cour des Capucins à Thionville
Press release
Thionville (57), 23rd August 2011
Inauguration of the Cour des Capucins shopping center
Bertrand Mertz, Mayor of Thionville and Moselle General Councilor, Alain Taravella,
Chairman Founder of Altarea Cogedim and Emmanuel Collin, Regional Director of the
Lorraine Caisse des Dépôts recently inaugurated the Cour des Capucins shopping center
in Thionville town center in Moselle.
In a catchment area of 250,000 inhabitants, the Cour des Capucins opened on 24 th August
2011. With four pedestrian entrances in the heart of the town, this shopping center of
8,710 SQM GLA welcomes Carrefour Market, Leclerc Cultural Center and around
forty shops. Designed by local architects Blaser & Schott with Group 6 for the interiors,
the Cour des Capucins is playing an important role in the revitalization of Thionville town
center.
Meeting sustainable urbanism objectives, this mixed urban project also includes a 400space car park on three levels, a 3-star plus Kyriad Prestige Hotel, and a
development program for around a hundred flats and office space (950 SQM net floor
area).
With practically all the space filled, the Cour des Capucins welcomes Carrefour
Market, Leclerc Cultural Center, Armand Thiery Femme & Homme, Camaïeu, Pimkie, La
mode est à vous, Mim, Okaïdi, Sergent Major, Marionnaud, Cop Copine, Best Moutain,
Damart, Tom Tailor, Valège, Olly Gan, Lynx Optique, Bonnie Megastore, Paul, Venizi,
Heures & Montres, Photomaton, Luis Kraemer hairdresser, La Pharmacie du Soleil, and a
BNP Paribas ATM.
Belgian retailers are also present with Paprika and Venizi, and Thionvillois traders too:
Mag Presse, Utopia Jeans, Fonzie American Diner, Ovni Bar and Scusi Bar. Thionville’s first
Japanese restaurant Eat Sushi has also decided to open in the shopping center. “Close to
hand” is the slogan defining the Cour des Capucins; with this retail offer, the town center
is nearby, once again.
The Cour des Capucins is a project by Altacité, a structure created by Altarea and the
Caisse des Dépôts dedicated to commercial revitalization in town centers. The initial
investment was 30 million euros, with a further 16 million invested by the town.
In response to sustainable development requirements, the Cour des Capucins shopping
center is certified “NF HQE® Service Industry Buildings” like the Okabé in
Kremlin-Bicêtre in Paris, another Altacité development that was the first
sustainable development-certified shopping center.
“Our Group has real expertise in urban requalification which can be seen in two recent
openings: the Espace Saint-Christophe in Tourcoing and today, the Cour des Capucins in
Thionville. The Cour des Capucins has a retail offer that perfectly complements that of the
traders and retailers already present in the town center. Its complete integration in the
existing urban landscape hopes to revitalize the town center as a whole by providing a
new influx. We are one of the only shopping center operators to successfully conclude
projects of this type with a high-end architectural product that perfectly integrates its
environment, control of the technical constraints specific to construction in a dense urban
environment and a diverse and adapted retail offering,” declared Alain Taravella,
Chairman and Founder of Altarea Cogedim.
“The town council was strongly committed to the success of the Cour des Capucins
project under the right conditions despite economic difficulties associated with the 2008
financial crisis, which had a tremendous impact on this retail and real-estate development
program. With this center’s opening, the town wants to inject a new energy in to
Thionville’s retail industry,” highlights Bertrand Mertz, Mayor of Thionville and Moselle
General Councilor.
“This mixed urban project is on the site of a former 17 th century convent which became a
military base in the 19th century then was left as urban wasteland in the town center.
Today it meets all the criteria for the town’s future success,” added Emmanuel Collin,
Regional Director of the Lorraine Caisse des Dépôts.
The final work on the Cour des Capucins Hotel and Housing development is scheduled for
the end of 2011.
