My fellow dancers, whose number include at least two people dressed as unicorns, are waving their hands in the air, giving the distinct impression that they just don’t care. For the briefest of moments I do care. I’m tired, sweaty, overdressed, awkwardly clinging onto my rucksack, and a decade older than anyone else at this thoroughly modern barn dance. The hip Parisians of Cabaret Sauvage (cabaretsauvage.com), a venue centred around a spiegeltent in Parc de la Villette, must think I’m my guide’s embarrassing uncle. But then Louise, who’s put her credibility on the line by taking me here, issues a nod of encouragement from her half of the hay. I raise my arms aloft and – to my astonishment – I realise I’m having a great time. The reason I’m at a wild Paris party and not in my warm London bed is Guidz. com, a new website connecting tourists with local insiders. Think Airbnb for Paris city tours - you select a guide according to personality traits (‘foodie’, ‘sporty’, ‘underground’) and for €15-ish an hour (excluding food, drinks, entry fees, etc) they’ll drag you off the tourist trail and show you local haunts they think you’ll like. In Paris, which can be overwhelming and intimidating to outsiders at the best of times, an English-speaking buddy such as Louise can go a long way. Half an hour after meeting at Gare du Nord – where I’d just stepped off my Eurostar – we sipped midnight martinis at Le Perchoir (leperchoir.tv), a Ménilmontant rooftop bar boasting knockout views of the city. Louise told me about the parties she organises for arts organisation Collectif Noblesse (collectifnoblesse. fr). For a first-time guide she’s impressively calm, even when her hard work getting us on the Cabaret Sauvage guestlist is undone by overzealous security guards. It’s hard to imagine anything fazing Cyriaque, my self-assured, charming Sunday evening guide, whose debut bar tour is as smooth and sophisticated as the cocktails we drink. He’s an authority on Paris bars and full of interesting info, yet this feels far removed from a traditional organised tour. We chat about music, politics, drinking and life in general, and I strongly suspect that he’d be in these bars tonight, hanging out with his DJ and bartender friends, regardless of me. It’s so new it’s barely Googleable, and you’d never guess from walking past that downstairs there’s a stunning bar containing just about every French alcoholic beverage. We make two other stops: Sherry Butt (sherrybuttparis. com), a cosy hangout for Bastille cocktail nerds, and Prescription (prescriptioncocktailclub.com), which is too showy for my tastes, though the drinks are undoubtedly brilliant. Cyriaque is delighted when I savour this Saint-Germain-des-Prés bar’s signature Saint-Germain cocktail while listening to French music producer St Germain. This, he says laughing, is as Parisian as it gets. I hope to keep in touch with both Louise and Cyriaque, and I plan to try more Guidz tours next time I’m in Paris. Who knows, I might even pack my unicorn costume. On choisit un guide d’après sa personnalité (« Foodie », « sportif(ve) », « underground » et pour FR 68 M E T R O P O L I TAN « PA R I S P E U T Ê T R E I N T I M I DA N T E E T I MPOSA N T E POU R L ES ÉTR A NGERS ; U N E COPI N E A NGLOPHON E COM ME LOU ISE P E U T FA I R E T O U T E L A DIF F ÉR ENCE » environ 15 € l’heure (hors repas, boissons, frais d’entrée, etc.), on sort des sentiers battus pour découvrir ses lieux préférés.
