Silenus is represented here resting during the task he had
been assigned of carrying his illegitimate son Dionysus to the
nymphs for protection after the death of his mortal mother Selene.
Several classical replicas in marble are evidence of a Greek
original, no longer extant, which can be attributed to the sculptor
and bronze worker Lysippos on account of the composition and the
slender proportions of the work.

Joseph-Charles Marin
(1759-1834)
Satyress with two little
satyrs, undated
Over the course of several journeys to Italy for the Grand
Tour, Hubert Robert created a repertoire of ruins and ancient
monuments, which he drew on to depict imaginary reconstitutions
of scenes from Classical Antiquity. This canvas depicts one of
Robert's favourite subjects: a semi-circular vault supported by
four pillars, with an Imperial staircase whose first flight descends
into the waters of a large fountain. Each spandrel features a
Winged Victory like those on the Arch of Constantine in Rome.
