J 200 Silenus is represented here resting during the task he had been assigned of carrying his illegitimate son Dionysus to the nymphs for protection after the death of his mortal mother Selene. Several classical replicas in marble are evidence of a Greek original, no longer extant, which can be attributed to the sculptor and bronze worker Lysippos on account of the composition and the slender proportions of the work. 14 Joseph-Charles Marin (1759-1834) Satyress with a little satyr, undated Hubert Robert (1733-1808) The Drinking Trough, 1804 20 Terracotta Ville de Paris, musée CognacqJay, Inv. J 204 15 Joseph-Charles Marin (1759-1834) Satyress with two little satyrs, undated Over the course of several journeys to Italy for the Grand Tour, Hubert Robert created a repertoire of ruins and ancient monuments, which he drew on to depict imaginary reconstitutions of scenes from Classical Antiquity. This canvas depicts one of Robert's favourite subjects: a semi-circular vault supported by four pillars, with an Imperial staircase whose first flight descends into the waters of a large fountain.
