As the practice of acquiring souvenirs of trips abroad and of
the Grand Tour developed, Canaletto was one of the first painters
to specialise in the genre known as Vedute. These were paintings
of landscapes and city views. The genre is particularly associated
with Venice, but it grew out of emulation and exchanges between
Northern and Southern Europe. The first examples were paintings
of Flemish landscapes. This view is of the bend made by the
Canale di Santa Chiara at the Santa Croce quay.

St Mark's Square was one of the favourite subjects of the
Venetian vedutisti. Like Canaletto, Francesco Guardi and his
son Giacomo often painted general views of the square in oils or
washes; sometimes with, sometimes without figures, but always
bathed in the various lights so typical of the Lagoon. This is a
work of maturity. Guardi's adroit, flowing technique is very
different from the great clarity and precision of Canaletto's work.
