‘Indigeneity’ and French Canada
An interdisciplinary conference, 16-17 May 2014
The relationship between the cultures and languages of indigenous peoples and those of the French,
French-Canadians, and modern Québécois represents an extremely rich vein for intellectual enquiry
and research. This conference, as well as attending to the urgent political issues which have
accompanied this reality and these histories, is particularly concerned with questions of conceptual,
cultural, literary, and identitarian importance which are provoked by the encounters, conflicts and
hybrid interactions between these groups over the centuries.
The conference is bilingual, in English and in French, and will be held in Room 104, Senate House,
University of London, Malet St., London WC1E 7HU. The organisers gratefully acknowledge the
support of the Foundation for Canadian Studies in the UK.
La relation entre les cultures et les langues autochtones et celles des Français, Canadiens français et
Québécois modernes constitue un riche domaine de recherches et d’enquête. Ce colloque n’évitera
pas les questions politiques urgentes qui encadrent cette réalité historique, mais il mettra l’accent sur
les dimensions conceptuelles, culturelles, littéraires et identitaires convoquées par les rencontres, les
conflits et les interactions hybrides entre ces groupes au fil des siècles.
Le colloque sera bilingue, en anglais et en français, et aura lieu dans la salle 104, Senate House,
University of London, Malet St., London WC1E 7HU. Les organisateurs expriment leur reconnaissance
