Women’s Writing and Filmmaking in Quebec
An International Conference

Keynote speakers: Mireille Dansereau (cineaste), Marquise Lepage (cineaste), Catherine Mavrikakis (Université de
Montréal), Ceri Morgan (Keele University).
The rich corpus of cinematic and literary texts produced by women in Quebec generates a myriad of intellectual
and research questions including: relationships among gender, feminism, national identity and nationalism;
positions with regard to both Anglo-American and French feminist thought; histories and spaces; literary and
popular fiction; the importance and influence of documentary; lesbian and other queer texts; languages and
hybridities in ‘exophonic’, immigrant and indigenous writing. This international conference will bring together
academics and practitioners to reflect on these and other issues, and to promote the importance and relevance of
Quebec with regard to the twin fields of women’s writing and filmmaking. The languages of the conference will be
English and French.
The organisers gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Foundation for Canadian Studies in the UK and
the Quebec Government Delegation in London.
Le corpus extrêmement riche d’ouvrages cinématographiques et littéraires produits par les femmes au Québec
provoquent une quantité considérable de questions intellectuelles: relations entre le féminisme, l’identité
nationale et le nationalisme; relations vis-à-vis de la pensée féministe anglo-américaine et française; histoires et
espaces; fiction populaire et littéraire; importance et influence du documentaire; textes lesbiens et queer; langues
et hybridités dans l’écriture ‘exophone’, migrante et autochtone. Ce colloque international rassemblera des
universitaires et des créatrices pour réfléchir sur ces questions, et pour promouvoir l’importance et même
l’incontournabilité du Québec dans toute considération de ce champ littéraire et audio-visuel. Le colloque se
déroulera en françis et en anglais.
Les organisateurs expriment leur reconnaissance envers le Foundation for Canadian Studies in the UK et la
