2011, année apocalyptique
Les gallois de Funeral For A Friend et leur post-hardcore reviennent
en force en ce début d'année 2011, avec un nouvel album dans les bacs
depuis à peine quelques jours. Welcome Home Armageddon est le
premier opus du groupe depuis le départ de son guitariste Darran
Smith et l'arrivée à son poste de Gavin Burrough. Alors que le groupe
s'apprête à envahir l'Europe toute entière et ensuite les Etats-Unis,
grâce à son nouveau (et ancien) label Good Fight Music, le gratteux de
la première heure Kris Coombs-Roberts a accepté de répondre à
quelques questions pour nous en dire un peu plus sur la conception de
ce nouveau disque et du changement de line-up qui a quelque peu
bouleversé la musique de Funeral For A Friend.

Sponge (Rock'N'Balls): Alors, comment se porte Funeral For A Friend pour le moment
? Comment appréhendez-vous la sortie de votre nouvel album ?
Kris Coombs-Roberts: On est vraiment très excités pour l'instant ! Je n'ai pas été aussi excité
pour la sortie d'un nouvel album depuis très longtemps ! On est en très fiers.
S: Ce nouvel album intitulé Welcome Home Armageddon est ke cinquième disque du
groupe. En quoi penses-tu qu'il soit différent des précédents ? Pourquoi devrions-nous
l'acheter ?
Kris: Je pense que les gens devraient l'acheter parce que c'est un bon album, avec plein de
bonnes chansons ! Je crois qu'il est différent surtout, évidemment, à cause du changement de
line-up, et parce que c'est l'album le plus honnête qu'on ait jamais enregistré. C'est
clairement un disque pour lequel on s'est donné à fond en tant que musiciens, pour jouer de
mieux en mieux et plonger plus profond dans ce qu'on était en train de faire.
S: Que peux-tu nous dire du processus d'enregistrement de ce nouvel album ? Avec
quel producteur avez-vous travaillé ? Et avez-vous travaillé de la même manière que
pour votre disque précédent ?
Kris: En fait, on a enregistré ce nouvel album avec Romesh Dodangoda, avec qui on avait
déjà bossé sur Memory And Humanity. Il a produit Welcome Home Armageddon dans deux
studio différents, le Long Wave Studio et le Monnow Valley Studio au Pays de Galles. Il y
avait une bonne atmosphère, car on connaissait déjà très bien Romesh pour l'avoir cotoyé
par le passé, il n'y avait aucune pression dans notre environnement, on était juste comme des
amis qui enregistraient de la musique, et c'était vraiment une très bonne expérience.
S: Quel est la signification du titre de ce nouveau disque, Welcome Home Armageddon?
Kris: Tu vois... ce titre est plein de contradiction, puisque « armageddon » c'est la fin du
monde, et « welcome home » est un terme plutôt accueillant. Je crois que beaucoup de
choses dans ce qu'écrit Matt (Davies-Jreye, chant) sont très contradictoires, avec beaucoup
de jeux de mots etc... Et quand on a cherché un titre, on a simplement pensé que celui de
cette chanson-là ferait un très bon titre d'album. Et évidemment, il existait beaucoup de
matière graphique pour illustrer ce titre. Donc ce n'était pas vraiment prévu pour être un titre
sombre ou négatif, seulement une espèce de jeu de mots.
S: As-tu une chanson préférée sur ce nouvel album, et si oui, laquelle et pourquoi ?
Kris: Je les aime toutes, pour être honnête, et ce n'est pas facile de dire laquelle j'aimerais le
plus, car on vit avec ces chansons depuis une très longue période, on les a écrites,
enregistrées, et ensuite mixées et masterisées. Elles font partie de notre vie depuis
longtemps. Et puis ça change aussi en fonction du moment, pour l'instant je dirais que ma
préférée c'est « Welcome Home Armageddon », car elle résume bien tout ce que nous
faisons, c'est agressif, c'est mélodique, et il y a aussi une partie très calme à la fin de la piste
quand tout retombe. Ce morceau démontre tous les aspects de notre musique, ce qu'on aime
et prend du plaisir à jouer, tout est réuni en un seul titre.

S: Quel est le thème principal des paroles de ce nouvel album ? Y a-t-il un lien entre
toutes les chansons ?
Kris: Hum... non. Et si vous en trouvez un, je ne pense pas que Matt l'ait fait
intentionnellement. Il n'a pas du tout travaillé dans l'idée de créer un concept-album. Je
pense qu'il parle de beaucoup de choses qu'il aime, mais évidemment je ne peux pas te
donner une réponse exacte puisque je ne suis pas à sa place... Je pense que les gens peuvent
se faire leur propre interprétation des chansons et y trouver une signification par eux-même.

S: Vous venez de publier un nouveau clip vidéo pour la chansons « Sixteen ». Quelle est
l'histoire de cette chansons, et pourquoi l'avoir choisie comme premier single ?
Kris: C'est une des premières chansons qu'on a écrites quand on a commencé à composer
Welcome Home Armageddon, un morceau avec lequel on vit depuis longtemps. Son énergie
et son atmosphère résument bien nos deux derniers albums, je trouve. C'est un très bon
exemple de ce qui se trouve sur ce nouveau disque, même si d'autres chansosn sont
beaucoup plus agressives que celle-là, car à la base ça devait être un titre acoustique. Mais
ça sonne définitivement comem du Funeral For A Friend !
S: Ce nouvel album sortira aux Etats-Unis grâce à Good Fight Music et réunit le
groupe avec l'équipe originel du label, qui avait sorti vos deux premiers collections de
musique qui étaient Seven Ways To Scream Your Name et Casually Dressed & Deep In
Conversation. Comment ont eu lieu ces retrouvailles ?
Kris: Par chance, je suppose. Les gars étaient très excités car on avait débuté notre carrière
chez Good Fight Records, et en plus le label cherchait des groupes. De notre côté, on
cherchait un label, donc notre manager leur a envoyé quelques titres, ils les ont aimés et
comme ils nous supportaient toujours, ils ont choisi de nous aider à nouveau. Maintenant, on
est plus qu'heureux de faire à nouveau partie de la famille. Ce sont des personnes que l'on
respecte et aime beaucoup, on pense que Good Fight est une bonne maison d'accueil pour
notre musique, et on est tout à fait rassurés que notre album soit entre leurs mains.
S: On sent bien que le groupe prend une nouvelle direction avec cet album. Penses-tu
que le départ de votre guitariste Darran Smith a été l'élément déclencheur du nouveau
style de Funeral For A Friend ?
Kris: Je ne dirais pas que son départ en est la cause. Je pense qu'il a été très important au
sein du groupe pendant bien des années, depuis nos débuts en fait. Mais au final, il y avait
pas mal de différents musicaux entre nous, et il a ressenti le besoin de s'intéresser à autre
chose. Mais on s'est séparé en très bons termes, car il pensait avoir accompli tout ce qu'il
voulait en tant que membre du groupe. Je pense que Darran et moi avons un style de jeu très

différent, les idées que nous apportions étaient fondamentalement différentes. Maintenant,
sur ce nouvel album, Gavin le remplace à la guitare, il a un jeu assez similaire au mien et
c'est tant mieux, car quand ce n'est pas le cas, c'est très difficile d'expliquer à l'autre ce qu'on
a en tête, tu vois. Je crois que c'est ce que nous voulions ramener dans le groupe, de
l'homogénéité, une sorte de fusion, pour redonner de l'intensité à notre musique. On essaye
d'avancer en tant que musiciens, quand on a une idée, on la booste au maximum, le plus loin
qu'on peut, jusqu'à ce qu'on estime qu'elle est parfaite.
S: Vous avez planifié une nouvelle tournée en Angleterre en mars 2011. Pensez-vous
tourner en Europe après ça ? Quels sont vos plans pour les prochains mois ?
Kris: Oui, biensûr ! Dès qu'on termine la tournée anglaise, on viendra en Europe, à partir
d'avril je pense. Ce sera une tournée très longue, on jouera presque partout où on le pourra,
autant qu'on le pourra. On viendra, c'est sûr.
S: Si tu devais choisir un seul groupe avec qui tourner, lequel serait-ce et pourquoi ? Et
quelles sont les influences principales du groupe en ce moment ?
Kris: Honnêtement, c'est presque impossible de choisir un seul groupe avec lequel j'aimerais
tourner. En tant que guitariste, j'aurais dit Pantera, car c'est mon groupe préféré de tous les
temps ! Mais si on parle d'influences, on écoute tous des styles de musique très différents, et
je pense que c'est ce qui rend notre son si éclectique. Donc ce serait très dur de trouver un
seul groupe pour lequel on serait tous d'accord. Je sais que certains membres du groupe
aiment beaucoup de groupes hardcore, ou des grands rockeurs américains, je sais que Ryan
est un grand fan de Queen, personnellement j'adore donc Pantera, Smashing Pumpkins
aussi, Rich adore des groupes comme Architects, et Gavin aiment beaucoup les
chanteurs/auteurs et est aussi un grand fan de Pink Floyd, donc nos influences sont vraiment
très vastes comme tu peux le voir.

S: Ca fait maintenant dix ans depuis les débuts de Funeral For A Friend ! Quel
regarde jettes-tu sur ta carrière après voir sorti cinq albums qui ont très bien marché
et alors que vous avez une énorme base de fans ?
Kris: Eh bien, ca a été dix années incroyables, et je n'aurais jamais cru pouvoir vivre ça
dans ma vie. Quand j'y pense, je me dis que c'est incroyable d'avoir visiter tous ces lieux où
on a joué. C'est un grand luxe que de pouvoir tourner et faire ce qu'on aime ! Je pense donc
qu'on est très chanceux, quand je regarde en arrière, je suis vraiment très fier de tout ce
qu'on a accompli jusque maintenant.
S: Eh bien merci beaucoup pour cette interview, Kris ! As-tu un dernier mot pour vos

The Welsh guys from Funeral For A Friend and their post-hardcore
are coming back in force in this beginning of 2011, with a new record
in the record shops for a few days now. Welcome Home Armageddon is
the first disc of the band since the departure of its guitarist Darran
Smith and the arrival in its role of Gavin Burrough. As the band is
preparing to hit the whole Europe and then the United States, thanks
to their new (and old) label Good Fight Music, the first-hour-guitar
player Kris Coombs-Roberts has accepted to answer some questions to
tell us more about the conception of this album and about the lineup
changes that turned Funeral For A Friend's music upside down.

Sponge (Rock'N'Balls): How does Funeral For A Friend feel for the moment? Are you
confident about this new record coming out?
Kris Coombs-Roberts: Yeah, we are very excited at the moment! Definitely the most excited
I've been about producing a record in a long time! We're all very proud about it.
S: This new record called Welcome Home Armageddon is the fifth record of the band.
In what way do you think it's different that the previous ones? Why should we buy it?
Kris: I think people should buy it because it's a great record, with great songs on it! I think
it's different, because obviously the lineup changed slightly, and I think this the most honest
record we've ever made. It's definitely a record that we've pushed ourselves hard on as
musicians, to kinda become better players and dive a lot more in what we were doing.
S: What can you tell us about the recording process of this new disc? Who did you
work with as a producer? And did you use the same working process as for the
previous records?
Kris: In fact, we've recorded this disc with Romesh Dodangoda, who also worked with us
on Memory And Humanity, he did it in two studios at the same time, in Long Wave Studio
and Monnow Valley Studio in Wales. There was a good vibe, 'cause we knew Romesh very
well as we worked with him before, there was no pressure in our environment, we were just
there like friends recording music, and that was a really good experience.
S: What's the meaning of this new record's title Welcome Home Armageddon?
Kris: You know... this title is plenty of contradiction, as « armageddon » is the end of the
world, and obviously « welcome home » is a more embracing term. I think a lot of things
that Matt (Davies-Kreye, vocals) does write are very contradicting, with a lot of cheeky
words. And when we searched for a title, we simply thought that this song's one would be a
great title for the record. And obviously, there was a lot of imagery which we can pop with
the album's title as well. But it was not meant to be a very dark or negative title, it's just
some cheeky play-on words.
S: Do you have a favorite song on this new record, and if yes, which one and why?
Kris: I love all of them, to be honest, but it's not simple to tell which one I love more
because we've been living with these songs for a long period of time now, as we've been
writing them, recording them, then the record goes through the mix and mastering. It does
change, but I think for the moment, my favorite would be the song called « Welcome Home
Armageddon », 'cause it kinda sums up everything about what we do, it's agressive, it's
melodic, and there's also a sort of very calming part at the end of the track when things
break down. It kinda shows the different aspects of our music, of what we love and enjoy
playing, it encapsulate all of that into one only song.
S: What's the main theme of this new record's lyrics? Is there a link between all the

songs?
Kris: Hum... no. And if there is one, I don't think it was done intentionally from Matt. He
was not going to write a concept record at all. I think he talks about a lot of things he likes,
but obviously I can't give an exact answer as I'm not him... I think people could take their
own interpretation of the songs and find a meaning for themselves.

S: You've just released a new video clip for the song « Sixteen ». What's the story of
this song, and why did you choose it as the new single?
Kris: That's been one of the first songs we wrote when we started to write Welcome Home
Armageddon, a song we've been living with for a long time. It has the energy and vibe that
sum our last two records. That's a shining example of what's on this record, even if some of
the songs are a lot heavier than this one, 'cause it was meant to be an acoustic song. But it
definitely sounds like Funeral For A Friend!
S: This new record will be released in the United States via Good Fight Music and
reunites the band with the original label team that released your first two major pieces
of music that were Seven Ways To Scream Your Name and Casually Dressed & Deep In
Conversation. How did this reunion happen with the label?
Kris: By chance, I suppose. The guys were excited 'cause we started up our career with
Good Fight Records, and obviously they were looking for bands. We were in a position
where we were looking for a label, so our manager sent them some tracks, they loved them
and as they were good supporters of us, they chose to help us again. We're now more than
happy to basically be back as part of that team. They're people we respect and like very
much, so now we feel it's a comfortable home for our music, and we feel reassuring that this
record's in their hands.
S: We can feel that the band is taking a new direction with this record. Has the
departure of your guitarist Darran Smith been the triggering factor of the new
Funeral For A Friend style?
Kris: I wouldn't say it's because Darran leaving. I think he's been a very valuable man with
the band for many years... since we started, but at this point, there were musical differences
between us, and he felt he would like to go into other interests. But we parted ways in very
good terms, 'cause he just did and achieved all that he wanted to as a band. I think me and
Darran were very different players, stylistically, the ideas we were coming up with were
very different. Now on this new record, as Gavin is now playing guitar, he has a similar
playing style to me, and when it's not, it's quite difficult to explain to the other guy what is
in your mind, you know. I think it's the whole thing that we wanted to get back, a sort of

homogeneity in the band, to bring back intensity into our music. Musically, we tried to push
ourselves as musicians, when we had an idea, we kinda kept pushing it and pushing it, as far
as we could take it, until we thought it was perfect.
S: You've planned a new UK tour in March. Do you plan to tour over Europe after
that? What are the plans for the next months?
Kris: Oh yes we are! As soon as we finish the UK, we all gonna be coming up in Europe
from April, I think. This will be a very extensive tour, we will hit pretty much everywhere,
as much as we can, anyway. We are definitely coming over.
S: If you had to choose only one band to tour with, which one would it be and why?
And what are the main influences of the band for the moment?
Kris: Honestly, it's quite impossible to choose only one band I'd like to play with. As a
guitar player, it would have been Pantera, 'cause that's my favorite band ever! But talking
about influences, we are all listening to very different kinds of music, and I think it's
probably what make our sound so eclectic. So I think it's quite difficult to pick a band which
we all agree on. I now that some members of the band like a lot of hardcore bands, or
stadium american rockers, I know Ryan is a massive Queen fan, personaly I love Pantera, I
love Smashing Pumpkins as well, Rich is a big fan of bands like Architects, and Gavin is a
lot into singers/songwriters and also a massive fan of Pink Floyd, so our influences are
pretty vasts as you can see.

S: It's been now 10 years since the beginning of Funeral For A Friend! How do you
look back to your carreer as you've released five successful records and have now a
huge fans base?
Kris: Well, it's been ten unbelievable years, and I've never think I could be able to live this
in my life. When I look back to this, it's pretty incredible when we think about all the places
we've been and played. This is a luxury to be able to go and do the things that you love! So I
think we're incredibly lucky, eveytime I look back I just feel very very grateful for what we
achieved.
S: Thanx a lot for this interview! Do you have a last word for your fans and our
