INTRODUCTION: When Bozar planned their Summer exhibition The Belgians, an
unexpected fashion story, they approached Maison Margiela Brussels to include a special
presentation based on private archives.
For this occasion, Maison Margiela Brussels reached dépendance, their long time
neighbor in the downtown vibrant Rue de Flandre quarter, and gallery artist Linder, whose
exhibition was scheduled for this period.
Linder's career began in Manchester in the mid 1970s, amidst the culturally explosive
moments of punk and post-punk. In her work Linder sets about the creation of a collision
between distinct socially coded and culturally reinforced notions of gendered identities
and behaviors. Therefor, The collaboration with Margiela's archive seemed natural.
The exhibition borrows it's title An absence, a presence, a mood, a mantle from Maison
Martin Margiela's response to the question “What is black?”

An absence, a presence, a mood, a mantle.
In 1998, Maison Martin Margiela responded to several questions on the subject
of colour. To the question “What is black?” The response given was “An
absence, a presence, a mood, a mantle.” In 2015, at dépendance gallery in
Brussels, a near neighbour to the first ever Maison Martin Margiela shop, there
will be an exhibition featuring the work of the British artist Linder and a selection
of pieces from the archive of Maison Martin Margiela, Brussels.
A second question posed to MMM in 1998 was “What is art?” The answer given
was “A need to reply.” The exhibition at dépendance examines that need and it
provides its responses through film, sound, and photomontage. “Mantles” from
the MMM Belgian archive such as a jacket created out of blonde wigs and a
waistcoat fabricated from wire and broken cutlery, will ventriloquise their own
replies to “What is art?”
The artist Linder uses found images in much the same vein as MMM work with
the found object. The artist works with pages torn from fashion magazines,
interior design catalogues, botany annuals - with whatever crosses her path and
pleases her eye. Just as MMM replicate found garments for their Replica
collection, Linder uses the found image to create sequences of photomontages
that replicate the original but at the same time subvert their meaning. Both MMM
and Linder treasure that which has been discarded by a culture hell bent on
newness and novelty.

En 1998 Maison Martin Margiela répondait à plusieurs questions concernant la
couleur.
A la question "Qu'est-ce le noir" la rėponse fût : “Une absence, une présence, un
ėtat d'esprit, un manteau*.
En 2015, à la galerie dépendance à Bruxelles, voisine de la toute premiėre
boutique Maison Margiela, aura lieu une exposition présentant des oeuvres de
l'artiste Brittanique Linder Sterling avec une sélection des archives privées de
Maison Margiela Bruxelles.
Une deuxième question fût posée à Maison Martin Margiela en 1998 : " Qu'estce l'art ?"
La reponse fût "Un besoin de répondre". L'exposition chez dépendance examine
ce besoin et y répond par le biais de film, son et photomontage.
Des "mantles"* des archives de Maison Margiela Bruxelles telles que cette veste
créée au dėpart de perruques blondes, ce gilet fabriqué au départ de morceaux
de vaisselle brisée et de fil de fer feront résonner leurs propres rėponses à
"Qu'est-ce l'art ?"
L'artiste utilise des images trouvées dans la même pensėe que Maison Martin
Margiela travaille avec l'objet trouvé. L'artiste travaille avec des pages déchirées
de revues de mode, catalogues de design d’intérieur, catalogues de plantes avec tout ce qui retient son regard.
Tout comme Maison Margiela reproduit les vetements pour leur collection
Replica, Linder utilise l'image trouvėe afin de recrėer des sėries de
photomontage qui reproduit l'image tout en sublimant leur signification.
Maison Margiela et Linder chérissent tous deux ce qui fut rejetė par une culture
basée sur le nouveau et la dernière nouveautė
*La réponse donnée par Maison Martin Margiela en Anglais contenait le mot
"mantle". Ce mot a différentes significations, mantle peut désigner un manteau,
une cape, un rôle , une responsabilité. L'étymologie du mot "mantle" vient du
vieux français "mantel"

(Een afwezigheid, een aanwezigheid, een gemoedsgesteldheid, een mantel*)
In juni 2015 is er in Brussel bij de galerie dépendance -een paar huizen verder
dan de allereerste Maison Margiela winkel- een tentoonstelling met werk van de
Britse kunstenares Linder Sterling op basis van een selectie iconische stukken
uit de privé archieven van MMM Brussel.
In 1998 antwoordde Maison Martin Margiela op een aantal vragen over het
onderwerp kleur.
Op de vraag "Wat is zwart ?" was het antwoord "Een afwezigheid, een
aanwezigheid, een gemoedsgesteldheid, een mantel*".
Een tweede vraag die in 1998 aan Maison Martin Margiela werd gesteld was
"Wat is kunst ?". Het antwoord was " De noodzaak om te antwoorden" Die
noodzaak is precies wat Linder onderzoekt en antwoorden geeft ze via film,
geluid en fotomontage.
"Mantels"* uit het Brussels Maison Margiela privé archief zoals een jasje
gemaakt van blonde pruiken, een topje uit scherven van porselein, bij elkaar
gehouden met ijzerdraad, moeten een antwoord bieden op de vraag 'Wat is
Kunst?'
De artieste Linder Sterling gebruikt beelden op dezelfde manier als Maison
Margiela werkt met gevonden voorwerpen.
Ze werkt met foto's en fragmenten uit pagina's die ze uit modetijdschriften
scheurt, of uit interieur design catalogi, planten catalogi - het maakt haar niet uit
waar de illustraties vandaan komen, als ze ze maar mooi vindt.
Net zoals Maison Margiela gevonden stukken opnieuw uitbrengt in de Replica
collectie, gebruikt Linder de gevonden beelden om fotomontages te maken die
het origineel beeld reproduceren maar tegelijk de zin ervan ondermijnen.
Maison Margiela en Linder ontfermen zich over wat verloren ging in een cultuur
die enkel oog heeft voor wat nieuw is.
*Mantel : Martin Margiela gebruikte het Engelse "mantle". Dit woord heeft
verschillende betekenissen : een mantel , een cape, een rol, een
verantwoordelijkheid. De etymologie van het woord mantel komt van het oud
frans "mantel"
