En Extrême-Orient, il existe
des variétés botaniques aux
caractéristiques différentes
de celles présentées par les
espèces et variétés occidentales.
Le rosier Indica, par exemple,
a la c ap a c i t é d e re f l e u r i r
presque continuellement mais
il supporte mal les climats
r igoureu x . A p ar t i r d e c e s
espèces botaniques, les chinois
ont sélectionné de nombreuses
variétés pour orner leurs
jardins.
Sans que l’on sache exactement
comment (peut-être avec les
caravanes de la route de la soie),
certaines furent introduites
dans les jardins occidentaux
et se mêlèrent aux variétés
qui y prospéraient.
C’est ainsi qu’apparurent vers
e
le milieu du XVIII siècle, des
roses qui présentaient des
caractéristiques hybrides et
qui surtout, refleurissaient
après la floraison printanière.
Elles furent regroupées dans
les familles appelées Damas
d’automne et Portland (du
nom de la duchesse de Portland qui aurait rapporté
d’Italie du Sud la première rose
réellement remontante).
La plus intéressante des
Portland est probablement
‘Mme Boll’ aux grandes fleurs
parfumées obtenue en 1858
mais qui est commercialisée
sous le nom de ‘Comte de
Chambord’.
In the Far East, there are several
varieties of wild rose whose characteristics differ from those shown by
Western species and varieties.
Rosa Indica, for example, flowers
practically all the time but it cannot
take harsh climates. From these wild
species, the Chinese selected many
varieties to decorate their gardens.
We still don’t really understand how
though it may have been on the the
Silk Road caravans that some were
introduced into western gardens and
mixed with the already flourishing
varieties.
It was thus that around the middle
th
of XVIII century that roses with
hybrid characteristics appeared.
Their main advantage was that they
flowered a second time after the
first spring flowering.

They were grouped together in
families known as ‘Autumn and
Portland Damasks’ after the
Duchess of Portland who is
supposed to have brought the first
truly repeat-flowering rose from
southern Italy.
The most interesting Portland rose
is probably ‘Mme Boll’ obtained in
1858, with its large scented blooms,
commercialized under the name
‘Comte de Chambord’.
