Der Paläokarst der Insel Chios kann insgesamt als ein Poljen- und Halbpoljenkarst charakterisiert werden. Er wurde durch Savannenflüsse
und Seen verschüttet. Die postneogene, dominierende fluviale Linearerosion bewirkte die Exhumierung des Paläokarstes, seine Oeffnung
und Angliederung an das heutige Talnetz. (GF).

Nonlinear analysis and forecasting of a brackish karstic spring

Nonlinear methods and artificial neural network techniques are applied to the study of the regime and the possibility of shortterm
forecasting of discharges of the spring of Almyros, Iraklion, Crete. Questions regarding the nonlinearity and chaotic characteristics of the
system necessitated the examination of dynamical properties. Toward this objective the time series of daily average discharges is analyzed
in detail. First, the dimensionality of the dynamics in the reconstructed phase space is found to be quite low, nearly 3 to 4. Then several
tests are applied to examine the nonlinearity and the presence of noise in the data. Using the surrogate time series test, a high degree of
nonlinearity and a deterministic nature are revealed, while the differentiation test showed that the presence of high-frequency noise in the
series of the discharge is not dynamically important. These suggest that an attempt to forecast the short-term future behavior of this time
series may turn out to be quite successful. Nonlinear methods, such as Farmer's algorithm and artificial neural nework, were employed and
found to exhibit a very satisfactory predictive ability, with neural networks acieving a slightly better performance. (PYJ).

This paper gives some new basic information on some small caves at Thination Municipality of North Corfu (Greece). The caves have
been explored by members of Hellenic Speleological Society during a field work carried out by Dr. G. Theodorou of the Dept. of Historical
geology and Palaeontology. Most of the caves have been explored in order to find possible connections between Megali and Mikri Grava at
Loutses area where trial Palaeontological excavations have been carried out. The study of the wider area will continue in the immediate

A short reference on some new findings of fossils mammals from the Upper Quaternary of Rethymno wider area.
The site of Armenoi includes endemic deers of sizes 1 and 2 according to the bones. Concerning the teeth we have a group of large size
corresponding possible to group C and smaller teeth remains comparable of size A or B. At the site of Oros it is very interesting to
document the coexistence in the fissure filling of big deer. (size 5-6), small Bovids and Suids. The size group mentioned above are
according to De Vos 1979 and 1984. (author, BB).

Fossil remains of a new endemic elephant belonging to the new species Elephas chaniensis n. sp are described. The fossil bones have been
collected at the submerged cave of Vamos at Chania, Crete. They belong to an endemic elephant about 20% smaller than the continental P.
antiquus. The new species lived on Crete during Upper Pleistocene. (author, BB).

studied. The main petrological types are limestones and metamorphic rocks, that cover a great part of the study area. Also, in some places

exploration at 50ies decade by I. Petrochilos. Continuation at 1979 and then at 1980-81 at a total vertical depth of –350 m and in five

The Megali Grava cave at Loutses (Corfu, Greece) has a very large room, the lower part of which is covered by sediment. Due probably to
the very high humidity of the cave and this sediment up to now there has been no scientific excavation. It was expected that we would
collect a lot of information for the Upper Quaternary fauna and geological history of ths study area. The uppermost layers of the sediment
revieled elements of Holocene fauna as well as archeological findings. The upper layers are greatly disturbed as it is shown by findings of
different ages collected in single layers. Excavation are planned to continue during next year. (author, BB).
