SPORTING AND POPULAR SUCCESS AT ESSAY FOR THE 2014 WORLD
CHAMPIONSHIP
The CIK-FIA World KF and KF-Junior Championships at Essay (FRA) will remain a benchmark
meeting for the 2014 season with the crowning of two great drivers, Lando Norris in KF and
Enaam Ahmed in KF-Junior. But the success of the Competition is also down to the new guidelines from the CIK-FIA and the quality of the French organisation.
Kees van de Grint, the Vice-President of the CIK-FIA, was keen to emphasize the important points of the
Essay Competition. «We had a great sporting and human event in Normandy. The combination of racing
at the highest level with the double World Championship for very different categories, and the Handikart
International Super Cup and the Historic International Trophy, has been very beneficial. It has been a
festival of karting that we witnessed at Essay. I congratulate Mr. Gripon’s team from the host club and
the FFSA for their fantastic work here. The presence of many spectators and general media reinforces
my idea that we have made the right choice by coming to France.»
First, the return to the single weekend Competition wanted by the CIK-FIA for the World Championships
worked perfectly. With 161 drivers on the track, it has been a long time since we have seen as many
participants in a karting World Championship. Measures relating to cost reduction that have been adopted by the international bodies also contributed to the sporting success this weekend. The quality of the
Norman venue, the high quality spectacle and the amount of fans at the track throughout the weekend
completed the basic requirements for the Essay Competition to be a success.
Constant domination of Ahmed in KF-Junior
The age 13-15 category was marked by outstanding performances from the British Driver Enaam Ahmed
(FA Kart-Vortex-Vega), aged 14, who started with the fastest time in Qualifying before winning all his
Qualifying Heats and the Prefinal and then the title of CIK-FIA World Champion in KF-Junior by winning
the Final without argument. The German Mick Junior (Tony Kart-Vortex-Vega) was on the second step
of the podium with a very strong track record, while the Venezuelan Mauricio Baiz (Kosmic-Parilla-Vega)
created a surprise by finishing third after returning from way back.
Norris crowned in KF
Although the Dane Nicklas Nielsen (Kosmic-Vortex-Dunlop) was the favourite at the end of the Qualifying
Heats for the CIK-FIA World Championships for KF on Saturday night, on Sunday, the humid weather
changed all that. Nielsen was involved in an accident in the Prefinal while Tom Joyner (Zanardi-ParillaDunlop) won the race. In the Final, the ranking was still changing with the takeover by the young British

Jonathan Wing wins the first Handikart International Trophy
Supported by the CIK-FIA, the first international kart meeting for Drivers with disabilities showed that
the sport is able to meet the aspirations of everyone. Although the battle for first place was lively on a
dry track on Saturday, on the wet track on Sunday it was a personal victory for all of the participants
and it rewarded an admirable individual will. History will record that the South African Jonathan Wing
(Zanardi-Rotax-Mojo) won the Final against the French Drivers Benoît Thibal (Alpha-Rotax Mojo) and
Claude Zéfirini (Tony Kart-Rotax-Mojo).
Finally, 34 historic karts took part in the second edition of the CIK-FIA Historic Super Cup, for machines
grouped into the four categories of ClasCIK from 1956 at the earliest to 1984 at the latest. As well
as several demonstrations on the track, there was an exhibition of these models which form the link
between today’s karting and it’s roots.

ESSAY, SUCCÈS SPORTIF ET POPULAIRE POUR LE MONDIAL 2014
Les Championnats du Monde CIK-FIA de KF et KF-Junior d’Essay (FRA) resteront comme
un rendez-vous marquant de la saison 2014 avec le couronnement de deux grands Pilotes,
Lando Norris en KF et Enaam Ahmed en KF-Junior. Mais la réussite de la Compétition doit
aussi à la nouvelle ligne directrice de la CIK-FIA et à la qualité de l’organisation française.
Kees Van de Grint, le Vice-Président de la CIK-FIA, a tenu à souligner les points importants de la
Compétition d’Essay. « Nous avons vécu un grand évènement sportif et humain en Normandie. L’association de courses du plus haut niveau comme le double Championnat du Monde avec des catégories
très différentes, Trophée International Handikart et Super Coupe Internationale Historique, a été très
bénéfique. C’est à un véritable festival du karting que nous avons assisté à Essay. Je tiens à féliciter
l’équipe du club organisateur de M. Gripon et la FFSA pour le fantastique travail accompli ici. La présence de nombreux spectateurs et de médias généralistes me conforte dans l’idée que nous avons fait
un bon choix en venant en France.»
En premier lieu, le retour à des Championnats du Monde disputés sur un seul week-end voulu par
la CIK-FIA a parfaitement fonctionné. 161 Pilotes en piste, il y a bien longtemps que l’on n’avait pas
dénombré autant de participants à un Championnat du Monde de karting. Les mesures concernant la
réduction des coûts adoptées par les instances internationales ont également participé à la réussite
sportive de ce week-end. La qualité de l’accueil normand, le spectacle de haute tenue et la quantité de
passionnés présents autour du circuit pendant tout le week-end ont complété les données de base pour
faire de la Compétition d’Essay un réel succès.
Domination constante d’Ahmed en KF-Junior
La catégorie des 13-15 ans a été marquée par les prestations remarquables du Britannique Enaam Ahmed (FA Kart-Vortex-Vega), âgé de 14 ans, qui a commencé par réaliser le meilleur temps des Essais
Qualificatifs avant de s’imposer dans toutes ses Manches Qualificatives, puis de remporter la Préfinale
1 et de décrocher le titre Champion du Monde CIK-FIA de KF-Junior en gagnant sans discussion la
Finale. L’Allemand Mick Junior (Tony Kart-Vortex-Vega) est monté sur la 2e marche du podium après un
parcours très solide, tandis que le Vénézuélien Mauricio Baiz (Kosmic-Parilla-Vega) créait la surprise en
terminant 3e après être revenu de loin.
Norris couronné en KF
C’est pourtant le Danois Nicklas Nielsen (Kosmic-Vortex-Dunlop) qui faisait figure de favori au terme

Jonathan Wing remporte le premier Trophée International Handikart
Soutenu par la CIK-FIA, le premier rendez-vous international de karting des Pilotes handicapés a
démontré que ce sport était capable de combler les aspirations de tous. Si la bataille pour la première
place a fait rage aussi bien sur piste sèche samedi que sur piste mouillée dimanche, c’est une victoire
personnelle pour tous les participants qui est venue récompenser une volonté individuelle admirable.
L’histoire retiendra que le Sud-Africain Jonathan Wing (Zanardi-Rotax-Mojo) s’est imposé en Finale face
aux Français Benoît Thibal (Alpha-Rotax-Mojo) et Claude Zéfirini (Tony Kart-Rotax-Mojo).
Enfin, 34 karts historiques participaient à la deuxième édition de la Super Coupe Historique CIK-FIA,
des machines regroupées dans les quatre catégories ClasCIK, de 1956 pour les plus anciennes à 1984
pour les plus récentes. Outre plusieurs démonstrations en piste, l’exposition de ces modèles a parmi à
tous de faire le lien entre le karting d’aujourd’hui et ses racines.
