WHAT CHALLENGES TO TAKE UP ? Tunisia aspires to become a regional financial center and will adapt consequently, its banking sector to international standards and to strengthen its contribution to the realization of the country’s development objectives. The restructuring of the banking system has been carried out in parallel with the modernization of the financial market aiming to increase its contribution to the financing of the economy and the resources of the company. More than a decade after the publication of the basic law on the reorganization of the financial market, the situation is rather mixed : on one hand, a regulatory and operational infrastructure of the highest order responding to the best international standards of market activity (Private Stock Exchange, FMC, STICODEVAM, Fund Guaranteed market, electronic trading system, and so on.), and on the other side, a market that is not playing its full role in financing the economy (8% of the private GFCF in 2006), a market capitalization of barely 14% of 2007’s GDP , versus 65% for Morocco for example, insufficient liquidity and a small number of listed companies. The reasons for this low penetration of the financial market are diverse : Predominance of the banking intermediation, the absence of an attractive offer to the investor (whether in the public or private), the scarcity of institutional investors and a still binding regulation with respect to foreign investments. Despite the relaxations made to attract foreign investors, the low attractiveness of the Tunis stock market justifies the low level of foreign portfolio investment recorded by Tunisia. In 2006, although the level of portfolio flows has been multiplied by 1.6 times compared with that of 2005, they represented only 1% of the gross fixed capital formation and 0.3% of GDP. de capital fixe et 0,3% du PIB. In addition, no special and dynamic measure has been taken to attract foreign portfolio investors, with the exception of that concerning the increase in the quota for foreigners with regard to the acquisition of shares. In addition, the traditional role of domestic institutional investors in the development of the stock market is also reduced and suffocated by the severe financial problems currently affecting the insurance sector. To achieve the goal of the stock market contribution to the economy financing by 20% in 2009 and to have 100 companies listed on Tunis Stock Exchange Market, several crucial sectoral reforms should be undertaken including : accelerating banking sector reform already begun and developing domestic capital markets, by speeding up the restructuring of insurance companies, so that they can play fully their role in the development of the Stock Market through the mobilization of savings in the long-term investments. Other specific measures in regard to the foreign portfolio flows are worth mentioning : - To more attract portfolio capitals through the listing of some Tunisian securities on foreign exchange markets, and promote the establishment of country-funds. - To accelerate privatization, especially in services (Banking, transportation, telecommunications, etc.) to help to mobilize the foreign investors interest and provide the stock market with more attractive securities. - To improve transparency and information disclosure at the stock market. - To allow foreign participation in the share capital of national companies beyond the current limit of 50%, in order to improve the attractiveness of the Tunisian stock market. Foreign participation is now 28% of the market capitalization. Certainly, the Tunisian authorities have appropriately considered the full liberalization of the capital account as a final step in the process, because of the need for prior strengthening of the banking sector, development of domestic capital markets and the progress in liberalization of prices and trade. The limited opening of the economy to capital flows had enabled the country to limit the effect of the shocks felt on the international capital markets. But now, policymakers need to develop answers sufficiently attractive to draw investment that will have a positive impact on growth and at the same time, they should be able to minimize the risk of costly financial crises. If the sequence of reforms is the key to success, the rhythm remains a crucial determinant of the economy’s capacity to prevail in the global economy. After a progress of 12.14% during 2007, Tunis Stock Exchange market recorded its fifth consecutive year of growth. This performance has, however, performed in 3 phases: - At the beginning of the year, in the wake of 2006’ performances (+ 44.3%), the increases in the market remain driven by the anticipation of good 2006 earnings. The Tunindex, which is a market capitalization index, reached at the beginning of February a new record at 2,712.23 points i.e. an increase of 16% as compared to the beginning of the year. Similarly, the BVMT index exceeded the symbolic threshold of 2,000 points and reached a high of 2,011.44 points, i.e. an increase by about 25%. - After that, the market has entered on a rocking phase. At the end of July, the Tunindex reached a low of 2,436.94 points and has fallen by 10.15% bringing the annual performance at 4.2% and the BVMT index has fallen by 12% at 1,771.55 points. - Since October, the market has begun a correction movement since the two indicators of Tunis Stock Exchange market have recovered. The capitalization index has increased its performance by 7.26% representing an annual growth of 12.14% to close the year at 2,614.07 points against 44.3% in 2006. In 2007, the BVMT index has evolved faster than the Tunindex closing at 1,929.44 points representing an increase of 20.66%. The increase was driven mainly by higher prices on the majority of the shares composing this index and a better liquidity in the market. Among the five most important sectoral indices of the Tunisian stock market, half took advantage from the bullish trend on the stock market. By sector, the strongest growth was recorded by consumption goods index. The sector continued its rise (+32.9%) driven by the agro-food sector itself stimulated by the growth of household consumption. In second place are the financial services with a performance of 27.2%. The sector has been driven mainly by CIL (+52.5%), ATL (+52%) and Tunisie Leasing (+15.1%). The banking sector is on the third position since the sector index was awarded an increase of 12.1% driven namely by BH (+48.9%), UBCI (+20.6%) and STB (+17.8%). The upward trend has continued in 2007 with a relatively sustained rate. At the end of the year, and excepting the 16 shares that have ended on a negative note, all the shares has evolved positively supported by a slight improvement in market liquidity and the lack of new companies on the stock exchange since only two companies have joined the market in the second half of this year and one in the alternate market at the last trading day of the year. Some small caps have shown this year good performances. These include namely STAR, ICF and El Mazraa. STAR has been the top gainer. The stock price has clearly distinguished this year by winning + 214% with important exchange volumes. The stock price of the first national insurance company has initially been subject to heavy speculation on 2006’s earnings before being propelled after the announcement of the forthcoming entry of a strategic partner on the capital of the company and who will hold 35% of the share capital after the increase. Investors have shown a particular interest on the share comforted by an increase in net profit of 2006 and the half year period earnings (+144%) and an anticipation of an exceptional net income at the end of 2007 to about 9 MTND. El Mazraa closed on a performance of 64.5%. The value was propelled after the publication of the halfyear results in rebound (+89.7%) leaving an optimistic anticipation on the expected earnings of 2007 since the second half year period is considered as the “ high season ” for the company. The stock of the leasing company CIL was also ranked on the top gainers of the year with an evolution of 52.5%. The share was propelled by the position strengthening of some reference shareholders and by the entry of foreign investors in the capital of the company. His peer ATL recorded this year a yield of 52%. Investors have shown a particular interest on the share comforted by a sharp 2007 half-yearly profit growth (+72.89%), and activity indicators of the first nine months. In addition, the entry of the company ENNAKL, one of the largest car concessionaires in Tunisia, up to 10.98% in the capital of ATL suggests possible synergies between the two companies. Meanwhile, MONOPRIX closed on a performance of 41.7% to end the year at 85 TD after touching a historical high of 86 TND in December. This performance was primarily driven by the growth of the activity indicators of the company at the end of the nine first months of 2007 with a sales turnover in rise by 14% at 180.4 MTND. In addition, there was arbitration done 14% du chiffre d’affaires à 180,4 MDT. Ce repli serait probablement une correction par rapport à 2006, année pendant laquelle le cours a progressé de + 53%. by investors in comparison to the company Magasin General (drop by 2.61% of the sales turnover over the nine months of 2007) which has met with social problems as a result of its privatization that reflects on the performance of the company. Among the big capitalizations, the banking share BH and SFBT were in the highest this year. The best rise is attributed to SFBT (+52.4%). Leader of soft drinks and beer in Tunisia, SFBT announced a program to restructure the group’s activities which could lead to the creation of specialized companies. This announcement coupled with a split of the nominal value of SFBT has improved the liquidity of the share and drawn the interest of investors. In the banking sector, BH has clearly distinguished this year as compared to its peers with an increase of 48.9%. Market leader in housing mortgages, BH is the fourth largest bank in the country as respect to its total assets. TOP LOSERS Declines have involved mainly small caps despite showing some solid fundamentals and promising prospects. The only big cap, which was in decline was TUNISAIR which lost 15% over the year. The downturn of the stock price in 2007 occurred despite the publication for the first time since the listing of the company, of a positive half-yearly net profit of 1.977 MTND. However, TUNISAIR recorded the largest trading volume of the year with more than 7.4 million securities. In addition, some other shares with good fundamentals felled such as SIPHAT (P/E07 E = 12.9), SIAME (P/E07 E = 13.62), SITS (P/E07 E = 8.17) and GIF (P/E07 E =7.8). Hit by the negative performance, STIP and Tunisie Lait were in a bearish trend. ALKIMIA, with the expectation of a balanced result for 2007 because of an explosion in the price of imported raw materials which had not been reflected on its sale price, did not escape from the stock market correction. SOTRAPIL, with the expectation of a slight decline on the net profit in 2007 and because of the delay in the launch of the new pipeline project Skhira Sahel, the stock price has lost 26% over the year. Despite the trading volumes strengthening in 2007, the liquidity of the Tunisian stock market has not improved meaningfully. Supported by a favourable macroeconomic conditions (growth by 5.3% of 2006’s GDP) marked by more rapid growth in household consumption, the majority of the sectors represented at the Tunis Stock Exchange market have well performed in 2006. The profitability (Sum of the net incomes of the listed companies) has therefore strengthened by 19.6% primarily driven by the good performance of banks (except Attijari Bank), industry and consumer goods. Generating over two thirds of the overall earnings capacity, the financial sector, led by banks, should show an average annual growth rate of 26.5% between 2005 and 2007. Capitalizing on a generally favourable economic climate driven by sustained demand for property loans and consumer credit, the profits of the banking sector are expected to rise by 21.3% between 2005 and 2007 according to our estimates. This strong growth will come primarily from expected incomes of Attijari Bank which will revive with profit and post a net profit of 29 MTND after fully funded in 2006 its non-performing loans. Leasing also display a good recovery due to General Leasing, this should release in 2007 a balanced net income profiting from a restructuring plan initiated by its main shareholder Attijari Bank. The insurance sector will also be in rise with the recovery of the first national insurance company STAR that would release a profit in 2007 of 16 MTND. Represented by SOTETEL, the telecommunications sector is expected to register an average annual growth rate of 26.4% between 2005 and 2007. The profits of the agro-food sector should evolve by an average growth rate of 15.83% between 2005 and 2007 thanks to the good performance of SFBT and El Mazraa. The subsidiary of Castel should gradually improve its profits (+8% in 2007) due to a broadening of the products range and an increasingly orientation towards products with higher added value (such as juices). Meanwhile El Mazraa is expected to register a grow by 29% on 2007’s net profit thanks to improved average selling price, the recovery in consumption after the bird flu crisis, intensified communication campaigns and new regulations promoting the role of the poultry structured operators. Except STIP, which would continue to generate losses, the benefits of the car component sector should record an average annual growth rate of 21% over the period 2005 - 2007 driven by the demand rise for cars in Tunisia, exports especially for ASSAD and GIF and the development of new products with higher margins. Regarding the air transport sector and despite good tourist season in 2007, we expect a decline in profits of 8.9% between 2005 and 2007. However, an improvement over 2006 is expected supported by the good performance of the national airlines company TUNISAIR which should benefit from improving domestic tourism activity, the first results of its upgrade program and the beginning of new marketing program based on stronger presence on the most profitable destinations. Nevertheless, the rise in oil prices over the world could reduce this performance. The profits of the retailing sector should also grow in 2007 thanks to the good performance of the distribution channel MONOPRIX that capitalizes on the upgrading of its outlets network, on an opening program of new ones as well as on marketing products with higher added value. For the health sector and namely for the pharmaceutical companies, the engine of growth will remain the segment of generic drugs, which should show strong growth linked to the launching the new social security scheme. Pour la SITS on s’attend en 2007, en terme consolidé, à une croissance de l’ordre de 300% du résultat net grâce notamment Known for the cyclicality of its profits, the real estate sector should show in 2007 an average annual increase of 59% helped by the housing boom in the country despite the rise in raw material prices. For SITS, it is expected in 2007, a growth of about 300% in consolidated net profit due mainly to revenues generated by the project ICC, one of 21 aux revenus générés par le projet ICC, un des projets stratégiques de la société appartenant à la branche haut standing. the most strategic projects for the company belonging to the high standing housing segment. For industries related to this sector, they will also be drawn up thanks to the dynamism of the real estate. The specialist and the leader of aluminium extrusions,TPR, recently listed in the stock market would show an annual average growth rate of 6%, despite the margins decline registered in 2007 first half-year period but were eliminated at the beginning of the second half. SOMOCER, with a change of its marketing policy and a renewed focus on the local market and a strategy of selective export can release a positive net income that would reach 4.2 MTND and may redistribute dividends to its shareholders after a suspension since 2004. In a context marked by the investment strengthening of the listed companies especially in the industrial sector and banks, they seem to keep in 2007 a generous dividend distribution policy. Thus, for a total profit of 45783 MTND (excluding STIP and Tunisie Lait), more than 192 MDT dividends will be distributed, i.e. a growth by 12% as compared to 2006 and a payout ratio of 42.3%. This double-digit change is driven by both the good evolution of the listed companies’ net incomes and by an increase in the payout ratios. Excluding the loss making companies, P/E 2007 stood at 14.27 against a P/E of 14.7 at the end of 2006. Some sectors have experienced sharp drops in valuation ratios and offer significant discounts as compared to the market. The insurance industry traded at a P/E of 6.36 x the earnings expected in 2007 that is a loss of 55% as compared to the market. Compared to 2006, there was an improvement with a P/E which rose from 4.7 at the end of 2006 to 6.36 at the end of 2007. This rise is due to the increase of the stock market prices of the listed insurance companies and especially that of STAR. However, the sector remains penalized by low visibility and restricted liquidity. In addition, a drop on the valuation ratios was registered by the banks from 15.8 in 2006 to 14.88 in 2007. This decrease is due to an upward of sector’s earnings forecasts driven by the fact that Attijari Bank will make up with profitability. Similarly, there was a higher valuation ratio for the leasing sector due mainly to the combined effect of higher prices and stabilization in 2007 of estimated incomes. The valuation gap between the sector and the market has significantly widened from a discount of 33% to 53%. Despite a slight valuation ratios appreciation, the health sector with a P/E of 11.6x, at the end of 2007, offers a discount of 18.3% as compared to the market. At the global level, the year 2007 was not a good year. The global economy grew by only 3.7% in 2007, and according to forecasts from the United Nations; it will experience a growth rate in decline in 2008 to 3.4%. In the Euro area, the economic growth is expected at 2.7% in 2007. At the national level, the growth rate for 2007 is expected to reach 6.3% compared to 5.5% in 2006 through the consolidation of the activity in manufacturing industries and services. This continued growth at a lesser extent would continue to maintain the stock market rising trend. On the fundamental level, the key indicators point to a continuation of the bullish trend: - The achievements published by the majority of the listed companies at the end of the first half year period augur to a continuing profitability growth that we estimate by 22% in 2007. A still attractive market valuation with a P/E 2007 expected, which stands off at 14.22x and a P/BV of 1.5x. - Despite the fact that some shares are overvalued, others which enjoy good fundamental prospects offer interesting investment opportunities. - An average market dividend yield by 3% in 2007, which is close to the rate of return on savings (= 3.25%) - To all these favourable factors, coupled with the positive impact of the expected listings scheduled for 2008 both in the central market (ARTES and POULINA holding) and in the alternate market (10 companies). 25 PERSPECTIVES SECTORIELLES OUTLOOKS BY SECTOR L’année 2008 sera une année charnière pour l’économie tunisienne. 2008 will be a transitional year for the Tunisian economy. With, as from January 1st 2008, opening up to global competition with the entry into application of the free trade agreement signed with the European Union in 1995, the Tunisian economy will face challenges of upgrading of the whole sectors of its economy while enjoying a sustained annual economic growth of about 5% a year over the past decade. Despite the persistent inflationary pressures on the world with the rise in prices of raw materials and oil and the shift of the dinar against the Euro several sectors have strong fundamentals and promising outlooks. From a stock market point of view, the year 2007 has not been favourable to the real estate sector. The investors’ reluctance to this sector could be linked to the characteristics of the real estate development activity which has a cyclical nature and therefore volatility of the incomes from one year to another. But according to our estimates, the property development activities are expected to continue their dynamism carried by the housing boom and the continuation of major projects. Good prospects also for the manufacturing industry sector in relation with the real estate one, which should benefit from the increase in construction activity and real estate mega infrastructure projects announced, and some of which will begin in 2008. For the other manufacturing industries, there will be opportunities of external growth and in particular regional development opportunities for some companies such ASSAD, ALKIMIA and TPR. The agro-food sector is expected to continue to benefit from recovery in domestic demand and the development of the structured distribution in Tunisia. Also the agro-food listed shares should benefit from the strong fundamentals and prospects of their performances evolution to improve their attractiveness. The retailing sector should continue to benefit from a strong domestic demand growth as a result of improved purchasing power and the development of the modern retailing. These generally favourable economic conditions should benefit to the financial companies and more particularly to banks and leasing companies. In addition, various restructuring operations are expected in 2008. In the financial sector, the first insurance company STAR will increase its capital by 35% with the entry of a strategic investor in its share capital. Developments at the regional level will also be expected for the year 2008 with the announcement by the first private bank BIAT to open a representative office in Libya, and the intention of Amen Bank to develop its activity on Algeria. In 2008, the only stock of the oil and gas sector to be listed SOTRAPIL should register a capital increase to finance its major project of the pipeline Skhira-Sahel which will be followed by a public offer where Public institutions will reduce their stakes in SOTRAPIL’s capital down to 34% against 52% currently. It is also expected in 2008 the announcement of the terms of the partnership between the two Tunisian charter companies Karthago Airlines and Nouvelair. Also at the end of 2008, the new company established as a joint venture between SIPHAT and Pierre Fabre will start its activity. Other listed companies will record in 2008 some changes: SOTUVER (completion of the company transfer), SFBT (restructuring of the group), Tunisie Lait (consolidation of equity and improving competitiveness) General Leasing (Recapitalization Plan and affiliation to Attijari Bank). In addition, 2008 will probably register the listing of POULINA group. This listing would be done to enjoy the benefits conferred by the Tunisian Finance Act 2007. Indeed, Article 31 of this Act provides for the deduction from taxable earnings the gain from the contribution in stocks and shares in the capital of the parent company or the holding company. This benefit of the deduction is subject to the listing of the parent company or the holding one in Tunis Stock Exchange market. If this operation will be completed successfully, the group POULINA will have the highest market capitalization (estimated at over 1500 MDT). It is also in this context that the group SFBT intends to restructure to list a holding company in the Stock market. Despite the fact that there are only 50 listed companies on the stock market and despite the lack of liquidity, the financial market is marked by interesting instruments and products aiming to build a more rational market behaviour and to escape the short term approach which is based mainly on speculation and lack of depth. This article targets to present an overall view on the mutual funds and mixed unit trusts and provides a scientific analysis based on the statistic tools and portfolio management to contribute to a better understanding of the financial market in all these components. We start by the analysis of the sectoral indices of the market to understand the market bias then to analyze the return of the mutual funds and unit trusts in Tunisia and eventually to specify the characteristics of each one. La place financière tunisienne est allée dans cette stratégie en mettant en place des indices sectoriels appro- Previously, investors deem the performance of the financial market through the two key indices namely Tunindex and BVMT. The set up in 2006 of the sectoral indices has come to give the market more visibility. Indeed, the investor has a dashboard that allows it to have a clear view on the market and therefore to rationalise its investment. In general, the choice of sectoral indices is strongly related to weight sectors in the economy. The Tunisian financial market adopts this strategy by setting up sectoral indices that are keeping with the economy 30 priés avec la structure de son économie. The committee for selecting indices decides to set up an index for banks (TUNBANK) owing to its heavy weight in term of capitalization, an index for the services (TUNSAC) because the importance of this sector in the Tunisian economy, an index for the industry (TUNIND) regarded as a classic, an index for consumption (TUNCONS) and eventually an index for the leasing companies (TUNSEFI). Over this period, four indices on five have ended with an increase exceeding 20%. At the top, there is the index Services with an increase of 32.24%. This good performance was mainly boosted by the rally of the share TAIR in 2006 rocketing by 154%. The index of consumption came in second rank with an appreciation of 31.74%, helped by the positive mood of the share SFBT by registering a rise of 57% in 2007 and 54% in 2006. The index of leasing companies ended in green with an increase of 31.43%, driven by the appreciation of leasing companies’ stock prices after the syndrome of General Leasing. The index Banks bounced by 24.02% thanks to a general rise in banks stock prices and the fine efforts expended by the majority of Tunisian banks for restructuring. In contrast, the index of industry closed on a negative note with a decline of 9.87%, which push to wonder about this significant sector. This bad note is due mainly to the drop in 2007 of SOMOCER, SIAME and SOTRAPIL shares which lost, 28.6%, 25.5% and 26% respectively. With regard to the risk, the table pointed out that the index of industry is the most risky with standard deviation of 18.34%. This trend suggests to us that the manufacturing sector remains undervalued. The index of consumption closed with a standard deviation of 16.18% vs. 15.88% for the index of services. The Banks index was the least risky with a standard deviation of 8.6%. Regarding volatility, the index of consumption has the strongest positive correlation with the market index with a beta of 1.42. Near to the Beta of the market, the banks index has a beta of 1.04. This result is reasonable due to the strong capitalization of bank shares. The index of leasing companies and the industry one have the lowest Beta with 0.43 and 0.47 respectively. For the return on the risk, we have used the Sharpe ratio. We note also that the index of banks and leasing companies have the best return on risk with a Sharpe ratio of 2.21 followed by the index of services with a Sharpe ratio of 1.72 and the index Consumption with a Sharpe ratio of 1.65. Conversely, the index of industry with a negative Sharpe ratio of -0.81 which means a return inferior that the bonds return. Regarding the performance of specific risk measured by Jensen’s alpha, the index leasing companies topped the chart with a yield of 26%. This value shows that the difficulties of “Genera Leasing company has caused a drop of leasing companies in 2005 followed by general recovery of the prices in 2006 and 2007. So, the return of the leasing sector ended at 26% i.e. the most important return in the market. The index of industry posted a negative alpha i.e. - 0.26 which reflects that the industry sector is hit by the absence of specific risk return. The index of banks is assimilated to market with a zero alpha which means absence of the specific risk return. RISK-RETURN RELATION In order to explain the relation risk return, we have presented the sectors on the BCG matrix. The analysis of this matrix shows three behaviours : - The Banking and Leasing sectors are characterised by middle level of risk and high return. - The services sector and consumption show a high level of risk and important returns. - The industrial sector is marked by a high level of risk and a negative return. This trend can show that the behaviour of this sector in the market is hedged, which means that for the high level of risk we have to post a high return. The mutual funds and Unit Trusts remains an attractive market for all investors any risk profiles confused. Despite their young ages, some Mutual Funds and Unit Trusts have managed to gain a competitive position on the Tunisian market. This market could be larger in scale if managers were able to overcome the problem of narrowness of the Tunisian stock market and the problem of shares liquidity. In this regard, the financial authorities are deploying enormous efforts with a view to promoting the financial market and encourage large companies to be listed in the stock market. Indeed, these efforts could spark a new era for investment products. In addition, financial authorities are expected to consolidate laws relating to the prudential management of the funds assets to better protect the interest of investors, considered as the engine of the capital market growth. Furthermore, institutional investors such as mutual funds and unit trust should be encouraged to participate even more to the dynamism of the Tunisian capital market to better channel savers investments and spoke up some of the speculation that governs unfortunately our small financial market. The choice of an investment portfolio differs from one investor to another because it depends on aversion to risk of each one and its investment horizon. Some investors prefer to fully replicate the Tunisian stock market index, Tunindex, so that their portfolios composition will be similar to the index one. This passive portfolio management method is well favored in the event of the rally of the market and heavily penalized in the opposite case. Other investors prefer to take the risk and adopt an opportunistic management based on investment on attractive securities and that have significant potential. In this article, we tried to determine a market portfolio that best approached foundation of the previous two modes of portfolio choice. The approach was based on the following steps: - First of all, to classify the shares composing the Tunindex according their market capitalizations and retain only those with the highest ones; - Ensuite, procéder à une sélection des titres les plus liquides parmi ces valeurs. -Then, to select the most liquid securities among the remaining shares. - Eventually to choose securities whose Beta is close to or higher than 1. This choice is dictated by the initial expectations that the index will raise in the forthcoming months thanks to several macroeconomic and microeconomic factors. The static portfolio will remain unchanged over one year. It‘s worth noting that the estimates were based on daily historical data over the period from March 2006 to October 2007 (18 months). The yearly expected return of the portfolio is 10%. We note that the market portfolio was strongly represented by shares like BT, BIAT and MONOPRIX that have taken considerable weights with respectively 18%, 11% and 14%. To a lesser extent, we find TLS with a weight of 10%, and GIF and SOTRAPIL with 9% each. On 01/25/2008, the portfolio has signed a gain of 6.25%, helped mainly by the good performance of MONOPRIX that recorded the best performance i.e. a capital gain up to 2,220TND. There is also an increase in stock prices of BH, TAIR and ATTIJARI Bank. From January 2008, we have tried to develop an optimal virtual portfolio for foreign investors. The determination of the portfolio was based on the Markowitz method. The estimates were based on the historical daily data over the period 2006-2007. the expected annual return of this portfolio is 10%, too. La composition optimale de ce portefeuille se présente alors comme suit : Among the shares composing the TUNINDEX, we have, firstly, eliminated the shares in which foreign investors can not invest (such as the securities of the retailing companies) then we eliminated securities whose foreign participation exceeds 50%. This portfolio for foreign investors notes a strong presence of SIAME and TPR securities with a weight of 12% each. In addition, three shares have a weight of 9%, namely, ADWYA, SITS and TAIR. On 01/25/2008, the portfolio achieved a performance of 0.41% boosted mainly by higher prices of SIAME, TAIR, AB and BH. In addition, the stock prices decline during the period of TPR, SITS and SOTRAPIL which have important weight in the portfolio has reduced its return. La composition initiale du portefeuille dynamique optimal s’est présentée ainsi comme suit : Furthermore, we have also tried from January 2008 to build a dynamic virtual investment portfolio. The determination of the portfolio was also based on the Markowitz method. The estimates were based on the historical daily data over the period 2006-2007. The yearly expected return of portfolio is 10%. The shares selection was based on the same criteria previously used namely market capitalization, volatility and liquidity but the analysis period differs because it concerns the period 2006-2007. The portfolio will be updated every month according to the new data base. Despite their drop over the year 2006 and 2007, we note that the Markowitz method has favored GIF and SIAME with respective weights of 24% and 14%. The model appears to anticipate a recovery of their stock prices. Monoprix and BIAT have also important share on the portfolio with respective weights of 13% and 16%. As of January 25th, 2008, the portfolio posted a return of 2.58% marginally higher than the Tunindex (+2.15%). This gain is helped by the increase of MONOPRIX, SIAME, GIF, Magasin Général and TAIR. The declines of SITS and SOTRAPIL have marginally curbed the portfolio return. Par conséquent la composition du portefeuille se présente ainsi : To comply with the criteria of the Islamic investment, which enjoys a greater demand on the part of foreign investors, particularly those from Arab countries as well as from local investors; we tried to build a virtual portfolio that meets the requirements of Shariaa compliant. This portfolio is limited to securities that comply with some criteria. Because of the illiquidity and shares availability on the market we eliminated from the portfolio ALKIMIA and Air Liquide Tunisia. The determination of the optimal portfolio was also based on Markovitch method. The expected annual return of this portfolio is 10%. Despite its negative performance particularly in 2007, we note that Markowitz method favored SIPHAT share with a weight of 21%. The model appears to anticipate a stock price recovery since it reached previously highest levels. Apart SIPHAT, the rest of the portfolio seems to be evenly distributed between the shares. Regarding performance over the period from 01 to 25 January 2008, the portfolio has been penalized (2.05%) by declines in almost all values. 48 LEXIQUE Actifs économiques ou capitaux employés C’est la somme de ses actifs immobilisés et de son besoin en fonds de roulement ( d’exploitation et hors exploitation) Agios GLOSSARY Agio It is the whole of interests (commissions, expenses) perceived by the bank following some financial operations.
