thy father's house. Ye have forsaken God's commands,
and thou hast follow'd Baalim. Now send, and gather . to
me the whole of Israel unto Mount Carmel; there
summon the prophets of Baal, and also the prophets of
Baal, and also the prophets of the groves who are house
feasted at Jezebel's table. Then we shall see whose God
is the Lord.
Est-ce toi, Élie, est-ce toi qui troubles Israël?

Ce n'est pas moi qui ai troublé Israël, mais toi, Ô roi, et
la maison de ton père, parce que vous avez abandonné
la loi du Seigneur et vous tournez vers les Baals. Eh
bien ! envoie-donc des messagers et rassemble devant
moi tout Israël sur le mont Carmel, et tous les prophètes
de Baal et tous les prophètes du culte d'Astarté qui
mangent à la table de la reine : alors nous verrons si
Dieu est le Seigneur.

Rise then, ye priests of Baal; select and slay a bullock,
and put no fire under it; uplift your voices and call the
god ye worship; and the god who by fire shall answer,

Debout, prophètes de Baal, choisissez un taureau, mais
sans allumer de feu, et invoquez le nom de votre dieu et
moi j'invoquerai le nom du Seigneur ; que le dieu qui
répondra par le feu soit Dieu.

laissera pas éternellement le juste plongé dans
l'inquiétude. Car sa grâce va aussi loin que l'immensité
du ciel et aucun de ceux qui l'attendent ne sera
confondu.

God alone can do these things.

Ahab, hast done evil to provoke him to anger above all

grove and an altar to Baal, and serv’d him and
worshipp’d him; Thou hast killed the righteous, and also
taken possession.
Le Seigneur t'a élevé du peuple et t'a fait roi d'Israël.
Mais toi, Achab, tu as commis plus de crimes que tous
ceux qui t'ont précédé. Il t'a peu importé de marcher
dans la voie du péché ouverte par Jéroboam et d'élever
à Baal un bois sacré pour irriter le Seigneur, le Dieu
d'Israël; tu as assassiné, et tu t'es approprié le bien
d'autrui !
And the Lord shall smite all Israel as a reed is shaken in
the water; and He shall give Israel up, And thou shalt
know He is the Lord.
Et le Seigneur frappera Israël comme un roseau est agité
dans l'eau, et il livrera Israël à cause de vos péchés.

infligé à son âme le traitement qu'il a infligé à ceux qu'il

very jealous for the Lord God of Hosts, for the children

Thine altars, and slain all Thy prophets, slain them with
the sword. And I, even I only am left: and they seek my

C'en est assez ! Seigneur, reprends mon âme ! Je ne
vaux pas mieux que mes pères. Je ne désire plus vivre
car mes jours ont passé en vain. Je me suis passionné
pour le Seigneur, le Dieu des armées, car les enfants
d'Israël ont abandonné ton alliance !
Ils ont brisé tes autels et fait périr tes prophètes par
l'épée. Moi seul suis resté et ils s'apprêtent à m'ôter la
vie ! C'en est assez !

wonders of Thy works! O Lord, why hast Thou made
them to err from Thy ways ? and hardened their hearts.

O Seigneur, je travaille en vain; mes efforts demeurent
sans résultat et inutiles. Ah ! Si tu déchirais les cieux et
descendais ici-bas ! Si les montagnes s'écroulaient
devant toi !
Si tes ennemis pouvaient trembler devant toi à cause de
tes prodiges ! Pourquoi les laisses-tu quitter tes
chemins, et s'endurcir le cœur au point de ne plus te
craindre ?
Oh, si mon âme pouvait mourir !

Oh rest in the Lord, wait patiently for Him, and He shall
give thee thy heart's desires. Commit thy way unto Him,
and trust in Him, and fret not thyself because of evildoers.
Fais silence devant le Seigneur, attends-le ; il te donnera
ce que ton cœur désire. Confie-lui la conduite de tes
pas, espère en lui. Renonce à la colère et cesse de te
révolter !

Seigneur approche.

Le Seigneur passa, et la terre trembla, et la mer

après le feu vint un murmure ténu, et dans ce murmure
ténu, le Seigneur apparut.

de ta paix ne sera pas rompue.

Then did Elijah the prophet break forth like a fire; his
words appeared like burning torches. Mighty kings by
him were overthrown. He stood on the mount of Sinai
and heard the judgments of the future, and in Horeb its
vengeance. And when the Lord would take him away to
heaven, lo! There came a fiery chariot with fiery horses,
and he went by a whirlwind to heaven.

combleront, soupirs et pleurs fuiront au devant d'eux.
