Abraaj Capital Art Prize 2010 Winners Announced
Art prize recipients honoured ahead of their March 2010 debut at Art Dubai
Dubai, September 7, 2009: Established to raise awareness of the underrepresented work being created by artists from the Middle East, North Africa
and South Asia (MENASA) region, the coveted Abraaj Capital Art Prize, in
its second year, has announced three winning teams of artists and curators
for the 2010 prize.
This year‟s prize recipients, artist Hala Elkoussy and curator Jelle Bouwhuis;
artist Marwan Sahmarani and curator Mahita El Bacha Urieta; and artist
Kader Attia and curator Laurie Ann Farrell, were all honoured as part of an
evening event held during a visit to Dubai that enabled the winning teams to
survey the site. They have six months to complete their artworks which will
be unveiled in March 2010, during Art Dubai, before becoming a permanent
part of the Abraaj Capital Art Collection.
Speaking at the event, Frederic Sicre, Executive Director of Abraaj Capital
commented: “In its second year, the Abraaj Capital Art Prize signifies not
only our continued commitment to supporting the creative potential to be
found in the MENASA region, but also re-instates Abraaj Capital‟s
unwavering commitment as a patron of the arts. Our aim is to empower
young artists across the MENASA markets and bring their talents to the
forefront of both the regional and international art community.”
Savita Apte, Chair of the Abraaj Capital Art Prize, stated: “The quality of
applications that we have received this year indicates a significantly higher
level of interest, understanding and maturity. We are thrilled with the high
calibre of established artists and curators vying for the Abraaj Capital Art
Prize. There will be both a regional and global audience keen to see each of
these artists‟ creations at Art Dubai 2010.”
Upon receiving their awards, each artist-curator team expressed their
excitement and their ambition to make the most of the endorsement by the
Abraaj Capital Art Prize committee.
Hala Elkoussy, a native of Cairo, Egypt and co-founder of the Contemporary
Image Collective – CiC, an artist-run initiative dedicated to the visual image,
commented: “I am honoured to be the winner of the Abraaj Capital Art Prize.
I am extremely pleased that such great opportunities are becoming
available to artists from the region.” Jelle Bouwhuis, Curator at Stedelijk
Museum Amsterdam, and Advisor of Visual Art & Design in Utrecht,
expressed his appreciation for the award by saying: “I'm glad that I have
been instrumental for Hala to produce her work on such an ambitious scale,
thanks to this prize.”
Marwan Sahmarani, from Lebanon, creates artwork deeply rooted in his
Middle Eastern origins: “It is an opportunity for me to share my work with
the Arab contemporary art community and to reach out to a broader
audience. In receiving this honor, I am „seen‟ by my peers as an innovative
voice in the Arab art world.” Mahita El Bacha Urieta, a half-Lebanese and
half-Spanish curator, producer and consultant on arts policy added: “I am
pleased to be selected for a prestigious prize such as the Abraaj Capital Art
Prize, which shows the commitment of this unique initiative in the MENASA
region to encourage regional up-and-coming talent and to support their
growth, especially curators.”
Kader Attia, an Algerian, expressed his appreciation: “To win this award
means a lot to me, especially with the new artwork I propose. To win the
award is, for me, the sign of an “echo”, of what I wanted and aimed to tell
with my (art) proposal.” Laurie Ann Farrell, who serves as Executive
Director of Exhibitions for the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD)
in the United States, commented: "This prize is so vital, because it enables
Kader Attia to bring relevant new work into the world and share it with the
many visitors to 2010 Art Dubai cultural season. On behalf of SCAD, I am
deeply humbled and honoured to work on this project and be a co-recipient
of this esteemed prize."

‫آسٌا‪ ،‬عن أسما َء الفرق الثالثة الفائزة بدورتها الثانٌة لعام ‪.9000‬‬
‫والفائزون بجائزة هذا العام هم‪ :‬الفنانة هالة القوصً التً ستعمل مع المشرف جل باوهوٌس؛ والفنان مروان‬
‫سحمرانً الذي سٌعمل مع المشرفة ماهٌتا الباشا أورٌٌتا؛ والفنان قادر عطٌة الذي سٌعمل مع المشرفة لوري‬

Annonce de la liste des candidats remportant
le prix d’Abraaj Capital Art Prize 2010
Les lauréats du prix d‟art honorés avant leur première exposition
à Art Dubaï en mars 2010
Dubaï, 7 Septembre, 2009: Etabli dans le but d‟exposer au monde les œuvres
insuffisamment représentées de la région du Moyen-Orient, d‟Afrique du Nord et
de l‟Asie du Sud (MENASA), le prestigieux prix d‟Abraaj Capital Art Prize, et pour
sa deuxième année consécutive, a été décerné à trois équipes d‟artistes et de
commissaires d‟exposition, remportant le prix pour l‟année 2010.
Les lauréats du prix pour cette année, l‟artiste Hala Elkoussy et le commissaire
d‟exposition Jelle Bouwhuis ; l‟artiste Marwan Sahmarani et la commissaire
d‟exposition Mahita El Bacha Urieta ; l‟artiste Kader Attia et la commissaire
d‟exposition Laurie Ann Farrell ont été félicités pendant une soirée qui s‟est tenue
lors d‟une visite à Dubaï, leur permettant par ailleurs d‟inspecter les lieux. Ils
bénéficieront d‟une période de six mois pour réaliser leurs œuvres d‟art qui seront
dévoilées au public en mars 2010 pendant la foire d‟art contemporain d‟Art Dubai,
pour intégrer par la suite la collection d‟art permanente d‟Abraaj Capital.
Intervenant lors de l‟événement, Frederic Sicre, directeur exécutif d‟Abraaj Capital,
a déclaré : « Pour sa deuxième année, Abraaj Capital Art Prize prouve notre
détermination à valoriser le potentiel artistique dans la région « MENASA », mais il
rétablit également l‟engagement sans faille d‟Abraaj Capital en tant que mécène
des arts. Nous oeuvrons à donner une plus grande marge de manœuvre aux
jeunes artistes sur les marchés de la région « MENASA » et à mettre l‟accent sur
leurs talents au niveau de la communauté artistique régionale et internationale ».

demandes de participation que nous avons reçues cette année indique un plus
haut degré d‟intérêt, de créativité et de maturité. Nous sommes ravis de voir ses
artistes et commissaires d‟exposition, tous de grande envergure, rivaliser pour
obtenir le prix d‟Abraaj Capital. Un public régional et international s‟attardera sur
chacune de leurs œuvres dans le cadre de Art Dubai 2010. »
Une fois les prix décernés, chaque équipe composée d‟un artiste et d‟un
commissaire d‟exposition a exprimé sa joie et sa volonté de bénéficier de l‟appui
du comité d‟Abraaj Capital Art Prize.
Hala Elkoussy -originaire du Caire- co-fondatrice de Contemporary Image
Collective- CiC, une initiative gérée par des artistes et consacrée à l‟image
visuelle, a affirmé : « C‟est un honneur pour moi de recevoir le prix d‟Abraaj
Capital. Je suis extrêmement ravie de constater que de telles opportunités sont
désormais possibles pour les artistes de la région ». Jelle Bouwhuis, conservateur
au musée Stedelijk Amsterdam et conseiller en Arts Visuels & Design pour Utrecht,
a exprimé son appréciation pour le prix en déclarant : « Je me réjoui d‟avoir
apporté de l‟aide à Hala afin qu‟elle produise son œuvre en atteignant un niveau
d‟excellence. Je vous remercie pour ce prix. »
Marwan Sahmarani, artiste libanais, produit des œuvres profondément ancrées
dans ses origines moyen-orientales : « C‟est une opportunité pour moi de partager
mon travail avec la communauté artistique arabe et de réussir à élargir mon public.
En recevant cet honneur, je suis « perçu » par mes pairs comme une voix
innovante dans le monde artistique arabe». Mahita El Bacha Urieta, commissaire
d‟exposition libano-espagnole, productrice et consultante en politique des arts a
ajouté : « Je suis heureuse d‟avoir été sélectionnée pour le prix prestigieux Abraaj
Capital ; ceci prouve un engagement sans précédent vis-à-vis de la région
MENASA, fondé sur une initiative qui vise à encourager les talents émergents et
les aider à se développer, notamment en ce qui concerne les commissaires
d‟expositions ».
Kader Attia, artiste algérien, a lui aussi exprimé sa satisfaction en déclarant : « Ce
prix est inestimable à mes yeux, notamment en ce qui concerne la nouvelle œuvre
d‟art que je propose. Il représente pour moi le son d‟un « écho » de ce que je
voulais dire à travers ma proposition (artistique). » Laurie Ann Farrell, directrice
exécutive d‟expositions pour le Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) aux
Etats-Unis, a déclaré : « Le prix Abraaj Capital est primordial dans ce sens où il
permettra à Kader Attia de lancer sa nouvelle œuvre d‟art et de pouvoir la partager
avec le grand public dans le cadre de la saison culturelle d‟Art Dubai 2010. Au nom
de SCAD, je suis profondément émue et honorée de travailler sur ce projet et
d‟être une co-lauréate de ce prix inestimable ».
