Life in terms of 0.1 seconds
Dear Reader.
Humans need a minimum of about 0.1 seconds of visual experience to perceive duration; so 0.1 seconds can be considered as our brain´s
lag. Even though an event could happen faster, our brain won´t be conscious of it.
According to a Nielsen Norman Group study, 0.1 seconds is about the limit for the user to feel that the system is reacting instantaneously
(anything faster would be pointless since our brain would not recognise it!!). Nevertheless in athletics, 0.1 seconds is the legal reaction
limit. This is the limit set by the IAAF on how fast athletes can react...
A loose ball grabbed by Kobe with 0.1 seconds on the clock, will turn a result upside down. Usain Bolt can set a new World record with 0.1
seconds with his feet.
0.1 seconds has been the average that many Europeans have seen the sun this spring.
0.1 units of seconds, is what one of the newest apps for Android offers you. Displaying the time in your mobile in 0.1 units of seconds...
The utility of that, apart from high battery consumption, is not that clear... Is it for knowing when is the "exact right" moment to make a
phone call?!
But now, seriously, was that really necessary? Do we really need to measure our life with infinitesimal precision? Do we really need to
apply that sense of immediateness to all fields in our life?
Undoubtedly 0.1 seconds is sometimes vital, but let´s face it, is it always? Don´t you think it would be nice to have a remote control like
Adam Sandler had in the 2006 movie "Click" to follow the Ringo Starr album from 1981 "•Stop and smell the flowers" ?

le décalage de notre cerveau. Même si un événement se produisait plus vite, notre cerveau n'en aurait pas conscience.
Selon une étude réalisée par le Nielsen Norman Group, 0.1 seconde est la durée minimum nécessaire à l'utilisateur pour sentir que le
système réagit instantanément. Pourtant, en athlétisme, 0.1 seconde est le temps de réaction autorisé. C'est la limite fixée par l'IAAF
quant à la vitesse à laquelle les athlètes peuvent réagir...
Une balle perdue saisie par Kobe avec 0.1 seconde de jeu restante ferait basculer le score. Usain Bolt pourrait établir un nouveau record
du monde en améliorant son temps de 0.1 seconde.
0.1 seconde, c'est aussi l'une des toutes dernières applications offertes par la technologie Android. Votre mobile peut maintenant afficher
l'heure au dixième de seconde près... L'utilité de la chose, outre une consommation de batterie extrêmement élevée, n'est pas très
claire... L'intérêt est-il de connaître le moment idéal pour téléphoner ?!
Sérieusement, est-ce réellement nécessaire ? Avons-nous vraiment besoin de mesurer notre vie avec une précision infinitésimale ? Avonsnous vraiment besoin d'appliquer ce sentiment d'immédiateté à tous les aspects de notre vie ?
