MORNING DANCE CLASS
Introduction to dance and Mandingo music
FATOU TRAORÉ
Presentation
African dance is a dance that features leaping. Leaping as the main constituent of the living, and of the movement of body and soul. An impetus
without which there would be no rhythm, harmony or joy... Traditional African dance and music are in a playful, ongoing dialogue. They are
complementary. The precision of the rhythms and gestures goes hand in hand with a possible, singular variation in moments of improvisation. The
articulation and coordination of the upper and lower parts of the body is complex.
This workshop offers an opportunity to experience the energy and interaction between dance and music from West Africa. It will be taken by dancers
and musicians from the show “Au Pied du Mur du Temps” choreographed by Fatou Traoré, which will be premiering at Les Écuries on 28 and 29
January 2016. Fatoumata Bagayogo, Fatoumata Diabaté and Bazoumana Kouyaté will teach the foundations of traditional West African dance,
accompanied by the musicians Mamoutou Dembélé, Abdramane Traoré and Modibo Kouyaté.
