ACTIVITIES IN THE FIELD OF CERAMICS
1959
Founded the Rue Bonaparte Studio with the great French ceramist, Francine del Pierre.
1969
Commissioned by the French Ministry of Culture to create works for the Manufacture Nationale de
Porcelaine de Sèvres.
1979-1980
Fellow of the Japan Foundation in. Personal exhibitions at the Municipal Museums of Kyoto and
Fukaoka and the Takashimaya Art Gallery in Tokyo.
1981
Invited to lecture during a personal exhibition in the Seattle Museum.
l983-1986
Worked in Japan to create porcelain for Dansk Designs.
1986-1990
Research and creation of Fresh red glazed porcelain, under the auspices of The Asian Cultural
Council, New York.
1987-1989
Study trips to Jingdezhen, Shanghai and Nanjing Museums in mainland China, and to Taipei Palace
Museum. Invitation by Professor Zhang Fukang, of the Academia Sinica and the Shanghai National Institute for
Ceramics Research, to study the archaeology and technology of Ming copper red porcelain and to lecture and present
slides at the Museum of Jingdezhen on her recent works.
1988
Research on Fresh red copper glaze technology in collaboration with Professor Zhang Fukang in
Paris, out under the auspices of the Asian Cultural Council and the Manufacture de Sèvres. Lecture on China trips
and copper red research at Guimet Museum.
1989
Macrophotographic study of the red porcelain of the Yamato BunkaKan, Nara, and the Municipal
Museum of Osaka. Consultation with Dr. Yamasaki Kazuo, of the University of Nagoya, President of the Oriental
Ceramic Society of Japan, and with Dr. Moriyoshi Yusuke, Head of the High Temperature Department of the
National Institute for Inorganic Materials Research, Tsukuba, Japan.
1990
Exhibition at The Ashmolean Museum of Fresh red porcelain by Fance Franck; lectures at an
international symposium on copper red porcelain in Oxford at the Ashmolean, in London at the British Museum, the
Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art, and in Paris at Guimet Museum and
the Manufacture de Sèvres. Symposium participants included the curators of these museums, the vice-director of the
Shanghai Museum, and eminent scientists from Shanghai, Tsukuba, Japan, Oxford University, the British Museum
and Guimet Museum and Manufacture de Sèvres in France. Lecture given in Oxford for the British Ceramics Society.
1991
Invited at the request of the French Cultural Ministry’s National Center for the Plastic Arts, Fance
Franck wrote a report on her copper red research.
1992
Percival David Foundation monograph series, the University of London published an essay on her
copper red work.
1993
Inauguration of the exhibition L'Oeuvre au Rouge - Poterie de Grand Feu de Fance Franck, Bau
Collection, Geneva. Lecture at the Baur Collection. Lecture at the symposium «Court Taste in Chinese Porcelain»,
organized by the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., in connection with the
exhibition Joined colors: Decoration and Meaning in Chinese Porcelain.
1994
Named Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres - ceremony at the Manufacture de Sèvres. Professor
Bernard Frank, Head of Japanese Studies at the Collège de France, awarded the insignia.
1995
Requested by Yuba Tadanori, curator of the Idemitsu Museum of Art, Tokyo, to write for the
catalogue Japon, Saveurs et Sérénité, an exhibition of ceramics for the tea ceremony presented by Cernuschi Museum in
Paris.
1996
Named one of four "alumni of the year" of Rice University, Houston, Texas, in recognition of
achievement in the field of art. Preparation a trilingual (Russian-English-French) catalogue for the exhibition Ceramics
of Fance Franck at the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg. The catalogue was prepared in collaboration with
Tatiana Arapova, Hermitage Museum, Maud Girard-Geslan, Guimet Museum, and Louise Allison Cort, FreerSackler Gallery, Washington, D.C.
1997
Collaboration with Professor Mikail Piotrosky, director, and Tatiana Arapova, curator, of the
Hermitage Museum in the production of the video film "Ceramics by Fance Franck at the Hermitage".Conducted
study group to Sèvres Museum for the members of Suzukake no kai during the exhibition Cordes de Feu – 1000 années de
poterie de Bizen and to Japanese Cultural Center in Paris for the Friends of Guimet Museum during the exhibition
Poterie de Raku.
1998
Group of stoneware and porcelain pieces was purchased by the Fine Arts Museum of Houston,
Texas. A large vase was acquired by the Fine Arts Museum of Boston, Massachusetts.
1999
Named Vice-President of the French Society for the Study of Oriental Ceramics
2000
The Smithsonian Renwick Gallery, the National Museum of American Art, Washington, D.C.
Acquisition of a porcelain vase by the Cleveland Museum of Art.
