This September, the world
will remember September 11,
2001 as we mark the 10 year
anniversary of the terrorist
attacks that changed our world
forever. In recognition of the
10 year anniversary of
September 11th—and in
conjunction with the current
Sheerar Museum exhibit
“Stillwater’s
First
Responders”—the Sheerar
Cultural and Heritage Center
will present “The Guys” a play
by Stillwater native, Anne
Nelson.
This past April, Anne
Nelson spoke at the Sheerar
Center Auditorium about her
play, “The Guys.” “The Guys”
is based upon Nelson’s real
life experiences and consists
of dialogue between a fire
captain who lost most of his
men in the September 11
attacks on the World Trade
Center in New York City, and
an editor (Nelson) who helped
him write the eulogies for the
men as she herself struggles
to come to terms with the
event. The Flea Theater, in
New York City, commissioned
the play and opened it in
December 2001. It has since
been produced in 48 states
and 14 countries—but not in
Nelson’s hometown of
Stillwater, Oklahoma.
Growing up in Stillwater,
Nelson attended Jefferson
and Will Rogers elementary
schools, and graduated from
C. E. Donart High School in
1972. She was one of the
first women from Oklahoma
to graduate from Yale
University. She was a war
correspondent in Latin
America and has written
extensively on media, conflict
and human rights. Nelson
teaches at the School of
international and Public
Affairs at Colombia University.
She received a 2003
Guggenheim Fellowship and
the 1989 Livingston Award
for international reporting.
Anne is the daughter of Ted
and Gerry Nelson of
Stillwater.
After listening to Anne
Nelson
share
her
experiences in April, many in
the audience expressed an
interest in seeing a local
production of “The Guys”.
The Sheerar Museum Board
of Trustees voted to pursue
the production of “The Guys”
at the Sheerar Center with
Sheerar Museum Trustee and
long time Town and Gown
Theatre member, Billy
Mc C ollom’ s lea d ers h ip.
Rehearsals have begun and
with the support of members
of Town and Gown, a live
production of “The Guys” will
take place in the Sheerar
C e n t e r A u d i t or i u m o n
September 9, 10, and 11th
this year. Tickets will go on
sale at the end of August,
with proceeds from the
produc tion being s plit
between the the Sheerar
Museum of Stillwater History
and an area First Responders
charity.■

Fifth Season of
Cool Classics Summer Concert Series
Each Friday in July, the St.
Cecilia Music Club and the
Sheerar Cultural and Heritage
Center is presenting the Fifth
Season of the Cool Classics
Summer Concert Series.
Funded by the Arts and
H u m a n i ti es C o u n c i l o f
Stillwater, the concerts begin
at 7:30pm at the Sheerar
Cultural Center Auditorium
located at 7th & Duncan Street
in Stillwater.
For the past four years, the
Sheerar Cultural Center Auditorium
has hosted the classical chamber
music series. Local music teacher and
St. Cecilia club member, Mahlon
Halleck plans and coordinates the
performances. Each concert is
approximately one hour in length,
beginning at 7:30 p.m. Admission is
free. A reception, sponsored by the
Sheerar Museum’s Board of Trustees
(Stillwater Museum Association)
follows each concert. The series is
held on each Friday in July, beginning
on July 8, and will end on July 29th.
The first performance, on July 8th,
featured The New Cimarron Chamber
Orchestra, playing Vivaldi, Schubert,
and Mozart. The players of The New
Cimarron Chamber Orchestra range in
age from junior high school to college
level students. This ensemble is
directed by Mahlon Halleck.
.
The evening of Friday July 15th
covers everything from Clair
de Lune to Guns N' Roses.
From c la s s ic - g on e - roc k
ren d ition s a t u ps c a le
restaurants and wine bars to
standing-room-only classical
recitals, Appassionata offers
unforgettable performances.
The New Cimarron Chamber Orchestra
with director, Mahlon Halleck, in the
first concert of the fifth season
featured a new addition to the Cool
Classics Concert Series’ lineup: the
Appassionata Viola & Harp Duo from
Tulsa. This unique duo consists of
Jeff Cowan playing viola, and Jill
Wiebe on the harp. Appassionata
presented a varied concert including
works by Ravel, Michael Jackson,
Debussy, and the Beatles.
Established in the spring of
2010 by Tulsa Symphony Orchestra
musicians Jeff Cowen and Jill Wiebe,
Appassionata has quickly become
one of Tulsa's most sought-after
duos. Appassionata's debut
performance at the Performing Arts
Center resulted in the first ever
"screaming standing ovation" for the
Brown Bag It concert series. This
provocative duo has caught the
attention of classical and pop music
fans alike with a repertoire that
The Cimarron Chamber
Players performs July 22nd.
Made up of local musicians
Perry Gethner, piano; Bob
Miller, clarinet; and Mahlon Halleck,
violin and viola the Cimarron Chamber
Players will begin their concert with
Beethoven’s Sonata in A minor, and
conclude with Reinke’s most famous
work, his trio for viola, clarinet, and
piano, written at the age of eighty-five.
The final performance of the series,
on Friday July 29th, will feature Tulsa’s
Trio Aleszky. Past attendees of Cool
Classics will know this ensemble by
another name, the “Eskitch Trio”. Trio
Aleszky is composed professional
musicians from Tulsa: Allyson Esktich
on piano, Paulo Eskitch on violin, and
Lou Lynch on cello.
The Sheerar Museum of Stillwater
History seeks to bring quality
programming to the Stillwater
Community throughout the year. The
Cool Classics series is a sample of the
kind of programming—from music and
culture, to history and education—that
the Sheerar Center hosts in the
Auditorium. ■
