Assign each student an adjective of
personality to act out in front of the class
or in small groups. The rest of the class
must guess the right word, and use it in a
sentence, making it agree in gender with
the person acting it out.

BACKGROUND
Michael Cera is a relatively new star in
movies, but he’s no stranger to the
camera. He’s been acting in one form
or another since he was eight. Most
people recognize him from his long
time role on the TV series Arrested
Development, which ran from 20032006. Since then, he’s moved into
movies, with great success in such
films as Superbad and Juno. What is
less well-known about Michael is that
he’s also a musician. Did you know
it’s really Ellen Page and Michael Cera
singing the theme song “Anyone Else
But You” on the soundtrack to Juno?
Michael Cera is even in a band. He,
Clark Duke (who also appeared in
Superbad), and Christian
Buenaventura are The Long Goodbye,
and they are currently unsigned.
Michael sings and plays guitar. He
does not play the bass, however, and
admits he had to fake it in Nick and
Norah’s Infinite Playlist.

Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist is
based on a book by David Levithan and
Rachel Cohn. It takes place in New York
City, and is a comedy about breaking
up, moving on, and ultimately, the way
music connects two people. The movie
details the events and musical pursuits
of only one night in the characters’ lives.
As expected from a movie centering on
music, the soundtrack is particularly
interesting. A few of the bands from the
soundtrack make appearances in the
movie, like Bishop Allen and Devendra
Banhart. The score includes the song
“Nick and Norah’s Theme” by Mark
Mothersbaugh. Mothersbaugh is a
former member of the band Devo, and
has contributed music to projects like
the cartoon series Rugrats, the video
game Crash Bandicoot, and the movie
How to Eat Fried Worms.

Show your students how both à and de
combine with the definite articles le, la, l’,
and les. What examples can they think of
where they might use these new
contractions? Put these two sentences on
the board and ask them to explain the
difference: Les élèves parlent au prof. Les
élèves parlent du prof.
Now students will use contractions of
de in prepositional phrases. Choose an
object in the classroom and have students
express where it is in relationship to other
classroom objects using prepositions with
contractions of de. For example, if you start
with the pencil sharpener, students might
express: Le taille-crayon est près de la porte.
Le taille-crayon est loin du bureau.
Suggestions for prepositions include : près
de, loin de, à gauche de, à droite de, à côté de,
en face de.

HOMEWORK
Ask your students to find de, de la, du, de l’,
and des in the article (not in the directions
to any of the activities in the article). Which
one can they not find? (de l’) For which
situations would they need this contraction?
Can they think of a musical instrument that
starts with a vowel sound in French, and
write a sentence expressing that they play
this instrument? (Hint: l’harmonica, l’alto,
l’euphonium, l’orgue)
Have students track what they eat over the
next day or two. They should record their
meals in sentences, remembering to use the
partitives du, de la, de l’, and des. For
example: Hier soir, pour le dîner, j’ai pris du
jambon, du riz, de l’eau et de la salade verte.

Angoulême’s comic festival has taken
place annually since 1974. Authors and
artists can meet one another, meet or
present to fans, work collaboratively,
etc. A favorite activity for the artists and
the public is the 24 Hour Comic Book
contest. Artists race to complete a 24
page comic book in a 24 hour period.
This year for the first time, the event
will also be open to amateurs. Over a
dozen prizes are awarded, covering
everything from best sense of humor to
best overall comic book. Last year’s
winner of the best comic book award
was Shaun Tan for his work The Arrival,
a graphic representation of what it is
like to be an immigrant.

STARTER
Have your students brainstorm and write
down which words they would use to
describe themselves. Next, have them cross
out any words that aren’t adjectives. Then
have them cross out all adjectives that do
not describe personality. What are they left
with?

cartoon character(s)? Remind them to make
the personality adjectives they choose agree
in gender and number with the characters
they’re describing. Does the rest of the class
agree? If not, which other adjectives can
they suggest?

Schedule a mock awards ceremony with
your students. Give each one the name of
another student, which must be kept secret.
Each student designs a superlative award
certificate for that person. If they need
ideas, suggest: hardest working, most
honest, friendliest, etc. When they are done,
present each recipient with their award!
HOMEWORK
Ask your students to decide who in their
lives are the kindest, the happiest, and the
most interesting. Have them consider who
are the least strict, the least lazy, and the
least irritating.
La Grande Odyssée takes place in the
Alps of France and Switzerland. It is a
triumph of environmentalism and
athleticism. It is Europe’s only major
sled dog race. Twenty-four ski resorts
contribute to creating the routes, with a
total height difference of 25,000 meters.
Although up to 100,000 people may
come and watch stages of the race in
person, new technology allows even
more people to watch at home via
internet. Each sled is outfitted with a
GPS tracking device. This gives a larger
audience a chance to experience the
event, and helps rescue workers locate
mushers in case of emergency.
