estination phare marquée à jamais par le passage de Napoléon III
et des grands de ce monde, Biarritz a toujours été l’une des
villes les plus accueillantes de France.
Le petit port de pêche de baleiniers devenu au XIXè siècle, par la grâce de
l’impératrice Eugénie de Montijo, station balnéaire à la mode, a su au fil du
temps s’ouvrir à toutes les influences sans jamais se renier.
En 1888, sous l’impulsion de la colonie britannique, le second plus ancien
golf du continent voit le jour à Biarritz. Aujourd’hui, c’est une dizaine
de parcours qui essaime la région.
Dotée de grandes plages, de vagues puissantes et d’un climat doux tout
au long de l’année, Biarritz a tout naturellement accueilli en 1957 les
premiers surfeurs du continent européen, devenant ainsi la capitale
historique du surf en Europe.
Quelques années plus tard, la thalassothérapie et la remise en
forme y ont acquis leurs lettres de noblesse, par la volonté d’un champion
cycliste célèbre, du nom de Louison Bobet… Quant à la pelote basque,
elle fait vibrer l’âme basque.
Dans son architecture aussi, Biarritz a pris la liberté de s’ouvrir aux styles
les plus éclectiques (Art-Déco, Belle Epoque, Néo-Basque).
Par centaines, ses villas racontent l’histoire d’une ville qui porte un attachement
tout particulier à la mise en valeur de son patrimoine et de son cadre de vie.
Empreinte d’une richesse culturelle que lui donna son ouverture sur le monde
et de l’authenticité du Pays Basque, entre mer et montagne,
à deux pas de l’Espagne, Biarritz offre à tous ses hôtes de passage un
accueil d’une royale simplicité.

A
major destination indelibly marked by Napoléon III and other
leading personalities, Biarritz has always been one of France’s
most welcoming towns.
Thanks to Empress Eugenie, the small fishing harbour for whale ships
became in the 19th century a fashionable seaside resort and has been open
over the years to all types of influences without ever compromising itself.
In 1888, encouraged by the British colony, the continent’s second oldest golf
course was opened in Biarritz. Today, ten or so golf courses are spread across
the region.
Biarritz is blessed with wide beaches, powerful waves and a warm climate
throughout the year.
In 1957, the first surfers of the European continent naturally came to
Biarritzwhich became Europe’s historic surfing capital.
Several years later, the seawater therapy, fitness and health
centers became well known thanks to a famous cyclist champion, Louison
Bobet… Basque pelota makes the Basque heart pound with every bounce
of the ball.
In its architecture, Biarritz has also felt free to open up to the most
eclectic styles.
Hundreds of villas relate the story of the town.
Marked by all the cultural richness and authenticity of the Basque country,
between the sea and the mountains and a stone’s throw away from
Spain, Biarritz offers its guests a royal welcome.

1885 on the former Paume lot. Its stalls
of fish and seafood are particularly wellknown. It opens every day of the week,
including Sunday and public holidays,
from 7.am to 1.30.pm.
CÔTE DES BASQUES
GRANDE PLAGE
Plage renommée où les premiers
surfeurs se sont essayés sur les vagues
de Biarritz en 1957. Plusieurs établissements de bain s’y sont succédé depuis
1845, le dernier ayant été inauguré en
2009. Il accueille désormais des locaux
pour les sauveteurs, les clubs et écoles
de surf, des cabines de douches, des
consignes,… ainsi qu’un restaurant et
deux boutiques.
Une des plus grandes plages de Biarritz,
le cœur de ville s’enroule autour de
cette baie qui s’étend du nord au sud
entre l’Hôtel du Palais et le Bellevue.
Autrefois plage préférée des GrandsDucs, princes et généraux russes : ils
déambulaient sur le quai-promenade
lors des beaux jours comme le font
aujourd’hui les badauds.
One of the biggest beaches of Biarritz, the
heart of the city winds around this bay
which spreads from north to south between the Hôtel du Palais and the Bellevue. In olden times, this was the favourite
beach of Russian Grand Dukes, princes
and generals: they used to amble along
the promenade when warmer weather
approached as onlookers do nowadays.
ATALAYE/PORT-VIEUX
Petite plage abritée permettant la baignade toute l’année, le Port-Vieux accueillait autrefois le port des pêcheurs.
Il est aujourd’hui très prisé des familles
avec de jeunes enfants. Il est surplombé
du plateau de l’Atalaye, d’où l’on jouit
d’une vue imprenable sur Biarritz.
The Port-Vieux, a little sheltered beach
which allows swimming throughout the
year, would host the fishermen harbour

in the old days. It is now very popular
with the families with young children. It
is overhung by the Atalaye plateau, from
where you can enjoy a breathtaking view
of Biarritz.
The Côte des Basques is a renowned
beach where the first surfers came to
Biarritz in 1957. Since 1845, several
bathhouses followed one another. The
latest was inaugurated in 2009 and now
hosts lifeguard premises, surf clubs and
schools, showers, left luggage lockers…
as well as one restaurant and two shops.

FISHERMAN’S WHARF
Abritant plus de cent commerçants, les
Halles de Biarritz furent construites en
1885 sur l’ancien terrain de Paume. Ses
étals de poisson et fruits de mer sont
particulièrement réputés. Ouvertes tous
les jours de la semaine, dimanche et
jours fériés compris, de 7h à 13h30.
Créé après l’abandon, en 1870, des
travaux du port du Refuge et grâce au
reliquat de la donation impériale, il
reçoit des pêcheurs et des plaisanciers.
Lieu pittoresque et coloré, il abrite aussi,
grâce à ses crampottes, quelques
restaurants à la mode.

LE ROCHER DE LA VIERGE
THE VIRGIN ROCK
Napoléon III décida de l’utiliser comme
point d’ancrage de la digue du port du
Refuge qu’il voulait créer. L’imposant
rocher de la Vierge fut relié à la terre
par un pont en bois, remplacé par une
passerelle métallique attribuée à Gustave Eiffel. Ce rocher doit son nom
actuel à la Statue de la Vierge érigée à
son sommet en 1865.
Napoleon III decided to use this impressive rock as an anchor point for the seawall of the Port du Refuge he planned to
create. The rock was also connected to
the land by a wooden bridge (now
replaced by a metal footbridge supposedly built by Gustav Eiffel). This rock is
named by the Statue of the Virgin which
was raised at the top in 1865.

À deux pas du centre ville, le lac Marion
est une halte bucolique dédiée aux loisirs et à la promenade en famille. Vingt
hectares, dont cinq de plan d’eau,
constituent ce cadre exceptionnel.
Un boisement de chênes pédonculés
ceinture le lac peuplé de perches, carpes
et autres calicobas.
Pêcheurs à la ligne, sportifs, promeneurs viennent y faire le plein de nature

et une aire de jeux de 3 000m² fait le
bonheur des enfants de 2 à 12 ans.
A step away from downtown, the
Lac Marion is a bucolic stop dedicated
to leisure and family walks.
Twenty hectares (among which five
hectares of water) frame this marvelous
environment.
An afforestation of English oaks
surrounds the lake filled with perches,
carps and other Pumpkinseed sunfishes.
Anglers, sportsmen and walkers
recharge their batteries with a natural
ambience and a playground of 3.000 m²
make children (from 2 to 10 years old)
happy.

110 hectares, est d'une qualité environnementale exceptionnelle. 68 ha sont
actuellement aménagés et ouverts au
public. Ce site est devenu un espace
naturel protégé partiellement classé

Haut de 73 mètres au dessus du niveau
de la mer et fier de ses 248 marches, il
domine le cap Hainsart ainsi dénommé
autrefois en raison des chênes qui
l’entouraient et qui ont été remplacés
par des tamaris.
The lighthouse was built in 1834 and
boasts 248 steps. It stands 73 meters
above sea level overlooking Cape
Hainsart (so called because of the oak
trees surrounded it in the past, now
replaced by tamarisks).

Erigée en 1864 à la demande impériale
d'Eugénie de Montijo, cette charmante
chapelle mêlant harmonieusement
style roman-byzantin et hispanomauresque a été dédiée à la vierge noire
mexicaine Notre-Dame de Guadalupe.
Elle a été classée monument historique
en 1981.
The imperial chapel was built in 1864 on
Empress Eugenie's request. A charming
construction of Roman-Byzantine and
Hispanic-Moorish style, dedicated to the
Virgin of Guadalupe (also known as
Our Lady of Guadalupe), the Mexican
black virgin. It was listed as historical
monument in 1981.

Construite entre 1890 et 1892 pour
l'importante communauté russe qui fréquentait alors Biarritz, l’église orthodoxe
russe est dédiée à la Protection de la
Mère de Dieu et à Saint Alexandre de la
Neva. Depuis l'origine, elle est réservée
exclusivement au culte orthodoxe grécorusse des églises chrétiennes d'Orient
(Patriarcat de Constantinople).
Built between 1890 and 1892 for the important Russian community who was frequently visiting Biarritz in those days, the
Russian Orthodox Church is dedicated to
the Protection of the Holy Virgin and
Saint Alexander Nevsky. From its origin, it
is exclusively for Greco- Russian orthodox
cult of the Eastern Christian churches
(Patriarchate of Constantinople).

voient pour la première
fois en Europe un homme
debout sur une vague !
Ainsi naît le surf en
Europe, et pour Biarritz
son surnom de capitale
européenne et de Mecque
du surf.
Elue par Louison Bobet en
1979 pour implanter l’un des
premiers centres de thalassothérapie français, Biarritz
s'affirme comme "capitale"
de la thalassothérapie grâce
à ses deux centres. Chacun
d’eux propose des soins à
la carte ou des cures selon
vos besoins : enveloppements d’algues, modelages,
rela-xation, massages, gommage, balnéothérapie, soins
de beauté, thérapie postopératoire, cure post-natale,
traitement anti-tabac, antistress...
In 1979, the ex racing
cyclist Louison Bobet
chose Biarritz to set up
one of the first seawater
therapy institutes in
France. Since then, Biarritz is asserting itself as
the “capital” for seawater
therapy.
Sea bathing in warm waters, mud and seaweed
baths, tonifying showers,
seawater steam baths
and water physiotherapy
are today the sophisticated techniques of seawater therapy.

wife Deborah Kerr to
shoot his film “The Sun

his surfboards on the
