Images de mouvements
Upgrade Montréal a le plaisir de présenter deux projets qui présentent la chorégraphie de
corps dans l’espace en tant que mouvements de danse médiatisés sur écran. Faisant partie
de LARTech (Département de danse à l’UQAM), une équipe d’artistes-chercheurs
présentera son travail en cours "No body dance, un Sacre du printemps en
infochorégraphie de particules pour l’écran 3D". Avec des détecteurs de mouvement, les
gestes des danseurs sont transformés en images virtuelles où le corps cède à des particules
en mouvement. Le geste, et non le corps, devient la trace de l’identité. Les collaborateurs
principaux du projet, Martine Époque et Denis Poulin, seront accompagnés de JeanJacques Maine, Normand Marcy et Fédérick Gravel, qui discuteront de leurs contributions
respectives à ce qu’ils ont nommé "paradigme de danse sans corps".
La deuxième présentation sera celle de Desh Fernando, artiste qui explore comment le film
peut créer une interprétation unique de l’interaction entre des corps dans l’espace.
Fernando et ses collaborateurs, Raphaël Ettore - chorégraphe, et Merlin Ettore percussionniste, présenteront des projets en cours ainsi que la dernière oeuvre de Fernando,
Lola & Me, film multidisciplinaire et parodie du monde corporatif.
La soirée se terminera par une table ronde entre les artistes et le public. L’ évènement est
gratuit et ouvert a tous et à toutes. Les portes ouvriront à 19h00 et les présentations
débuteront promptement à 19h20.

Upgrade Montréal is pleased to present two projects that translate the choreography of
bodies in space into mediated dance movements on screen. From LARTech (UQAM’s
Department of Dance), a collaborative team of artist-researchers will present their work in
progress “No body dance: a 3-D Rite of Spring in infochoreography of particles for screen.”
Using movement detectors, the dancers’ bodies are transformed into a visible expression of
movement, now discernible only through particles. Gesture, not the body, becomes the
marker of identity. Along side the project chief-collaborators, Martine Époque and Denis
Poulin, are Jean-Jacques Maine, Normand Marcy and Fédérick Gravel, who will each
discuss their individual contributions to what they have termed a “paradigm of dance
without bodies.”
The second presenter is Desh Fernando. Fernando explores how film can create a unique
interpretation of the interaction between bodies in space. Fernando and his collaborators,
Raphaël Ettore (choreographer) and Merlin Ettore (percussionist), will present some of their
works in progress, as well as Fernando’s past film projects, including Lola & Me, a
multidisciplinary film and comedic parody of the corporate world.
The event will culminate with a round table discussion between the artists and public. The
free event is open to all, starting at 7:00 PM. The presentations begin promptly at 7:20 PM.

Do Body Dance
Martine Époque et Denis Poulin ont obtenu une
subvention triennale du Conseil de recherches en
Sciences humaines du Canada (CRSH, 20052008) pour leur projet " No body dance, un Sacre
du printemps en infochorégraphie de particules
pour l’écran 3D ". Basée sur un paradigme
d’écriture infochorégraphique qu’ils ont nommé "
paradigme de danse sans corps ", cette
réalisation
recourt
à
des
technologies
numériques de capture du mouvement et
d’édition de fluides. La subvention obtenue va permettre aux chercheurs-créateurs
d’expérimenter outils et processus liés à ce type de création à travers la production d’un projet
pilote grâce auquel ils espèrent recueillir le financement nécessaire à la création de l’intégralité
du Sacre du printemps, célèbre musique d’Igor Stravinski dont l’année 2013 verra le centenaire
de la création. Les collaborateurs principaux de Martine Époque et Denis Poulin pour ce projet
sont Jean-Jacques Maine, membre associé de LARTech, à titre de conseiller technologique, de
Normand Marcy, étudiant au doctorat en Études et pratiques des arts à l’UQAM et Frédérick
Gravel, étudiant à la maîtrise en danse de cette institution, à titre d’assistants infochorégraphes,
et des danseurs de Tabula rasa, Karine Cloutier, Caroline Gravel et Jean-François Légaré. Les
travaux entrepris depuis le début de l’automne sont prometteurs. Le projet pilote devrait être
réalisé d’ici la fin de l’hiver 2008.

Martine Époque and Denis Poulin are recipients of a grant from the Social Sciences and
Humanities research council (SSHRC 2005-2008) for the project No body dance: a 3-D Rite of
Spring in infochoreography of particles for screen.” Based on a paradigm of infochoreography
that they have termed “the paradigm of dance without body,” this production uses digital
technologies to capture movement and fluidity. The funding has allowed the researchers-artists
to experiment with tools and processes which are being put into practice through a pilot project
that will see the integrality of Stravinski’s notorious Rite of Spring; 2013 being the centennial of its
creation. The principal collaborators working with Martine Époque and Denis Poulin on this
project are Jean Jacques Maine - associate member of LARTech and technological consultant,
Normand Marcy - Ph.D. student in Études et pratiques des arts at UQAM, Frédérick Gravel Masters student in dance at this same institution and infochoreographic assistant, and the
dansers of Tabula rasa Karine Cloutier, Caroline Gravel and Jean-François Légaré. The pilot
project should be completed by the end of the winter of 2008.

Desh Fernando
Desh Fernando est un producteur de film interdisciplinaire qui a créé
plusieurs films intégrant la danse. Il est diplômé en arts visuels (BFA
2005) du Mel Hoppenheim Shcool of Cinema de l’Université
Concordia en 2005, où il a de plus complété deux ans de formation
en danse et en chorégraphie au département de danse. Sa
dernière création, “Lola & Me”, est un film numérique de 21 minutes
avec une chorégraphie originale et spécifique au lieu.
Présentement, il travaille sur un vidéo de musique expérimentale qui
explore l’intégration de la percussion à la danse. Dans tous ses projets, Fernando est très
dévoué à l’exploration et à la promotion de l’intégration du mouvement du corps et le film
avec d’autres éléments multimédia, rendant ainsi la danse plus tangible et accessible à divers
publics.
Desh Fernando is an interdisciplinary filmmaker who has created several films that integrate
dance. He graduated with a BFA from Concordia University’s Mel Hoppenheim School of
Cinema in 2005, where he also completed two years of contemporary dance training and
choreography at Concordia’s Dance Department. His most recent creation, “Lola & Me”, is a
21-minute digital film with original, site-specific choreography by Fernando. He is currently
working on an experimental music video, which explores the integrating percussion and dance
In all of his work, Fernando is very committed to exploring and promoting the integration of body
movement and film with other elements of multi-media, making dance more tangible and
accessible to a diverse audience.
