Correspoadenco, 1833-41t of Villiam Vilshero. M.P. for Gt. Yarmouth, co Norfolk. Dopcsitad as a g i f t by Mrs. Hine,
vidov of R.L. Hine of Hitchin, i a June 1951. [Accession 349] Invontory compiled
January 1969.
D/EX14 Introduction. Tho bulk of this collection consists of letters by William Viishore
of tho Hermitage, Hitehin, &3 a result of his oloction as one of the
members for tho borough of Great Yarmouth, co. Norfolk. A p o t i t i e n
alleging corruption and othor malpractices on tho part of tho Liberals
.; presented by the unsuccessful opposition i n an attempt to render
the oloction void. [A copy of part o f this petition, boing tho relevant
pagos from, probably, The Journal of tho House of Commons f o r 4 Dec 1837,
is catalogued under Herts C.R.O. roforonco 60207/1 (Vilshere Collection).]
Eventually in April 1833, agreement va3 reached between tho tvo parties
t h a t one sitting member should vacate his seat and a joint opinion
given by Charl03 Grevillo and tho Karquis of Tavistock confirmed that
Wilshere ought to resign. Early i n 1839 Thomas Earing, one of the
Tory candidates, vithdrov his demand that Vilshere should vacate h i s
s e a t . The reason for this i s not apparont, though i t may perhaps be.
i n f e r r e d that the election methods of noithor party stood up to scrutiny
vith credit.
Tho major part of accession 346 has already been absorbed into the Dolme - Radsliffe correspondence, having boon catalogued under Sorts. C.R.0 reference DE4563-5075. CORRESPONDENCE
