Le gérondif
Rappel
• Le gérondif anglais est un nom verbal formé à partir de la
base verbale à laquelle on ajoute le suffixe -ing.
• Le gérondif renvoie à « l’action de faire quelque chose ». Il
se traduit par un infinitif ou un nom : swimming = (le fait de)
nager ou la natation (Swimming is good for you.)
• Il ne faut pas confondre cette forme en -ing avec d’autres :
– de simples noms : an opening (une ouverture) ;
– le participe présent d’un verbe (They’re opening a new
store next week = ils ouvrent un nouveau magasin la semaine
prochaine) ;
– un adjectif verbal (The opening statement set the tone of the
speech = La phrase d’introduction donna le ton du discours).
Comment distinguer ces différentes sortes de mots ?
• Le simple nom est accompagné d’un déterminant.
• Le gérondif fonctionne le plus souvent seul.
• Le participe présent fonctionne avec le verbe be, ou seul,
mais il a toujours un sujet quelque part dans la phrase.
• L’adjectif verbal fonctionne comme épithète ou comme
attribut. Il se rapporte toujours à un nom.
