Helpful grammatical vocabulary applied to French Noun (le nom): A word that represents a person, animal, place, thing, event or concept. Ex.: artiste; chat; région; ordinateur; mariage; patience. Article (l’article): A word placed before a noun to show whether: the noun is specific or to speak in general terms (articles définis: le, la, l’, les) the noun is non-specific (articles indéfinis: un, une, des) the noun cannot be counted or is part of a whole (articles partitifs: du, de la, de l’) Pronoun (le pronom): A word that replaces one or more nouns. Ex.: je; elle; nous; moi; toi; le; la; les; lui; leur; me; te; en; y; qui; que. Adjective (l’adjectif): A word that describes a noun. It agrees with the noun it describes (= it is masculine if the noun is masculine; feminine if the noun is feminine; plural if the noun is plural). In French, adjectives are usually placed after the noun they describe. Ex.: un(e) ami(e) sincère; une robe bleue; un fromage délicieux; des étudiants travailleurs; une maison ancienne. A few adjectives are placed before the noun (think of “BAGS”: Beauty; Age; Goodness; Size) Ex.: une belle dame; un vieil arbre; un bon gâteau; une mauvaise décision; de(s) petites voitures; une grande université. Verb (le verbe): A word that indicates the “action” (in a broad sense) of the sentence. Conjugated Verb (le verbe conjugué): A verb whose form agrees with (=corresponds to) its subject. Présent: Je pense; Nous invitons; Ils finissent; Daniela descend. Impératif: Parle ! Mange ! Partons ! Entrez ! Passé composé: Toi et Patrick avez réussi; J’ai compris; Le prof est arrivé; Je suis tombé(e). Imparfait: Les employés travaillaient; Tu attendais; Nous écoutions; Vous étudiez. Futur proche: Vous allez décider; Ils vont jouer; Je vais voir. Futur: Tu voyageras; Pierre et Marie visiteront; Je paierai. Conditionnel: Tu partirais; Je voudrais; David et moi irions; Elles sauraient. Infinitive Verb (l’infinitif): The non-conjugated form of a verb found in the dictionary. Ex.: avoir; être; manger; (se) parler; coûter; réfléchir; choisir; rendre; faire; (se) mettre. Past Participle (le participe passé): A form of the verb that constitutes the second part of the passé composé. Ex.: Tu as téléphoné; Vous avez acheté ce vélo; J’ai loué un studio; Elles ont dormi; Il est sorti; Je suis descendu(e); Nous avons vendu notre voiture; J’ai eu peur; Delphine a été courageuse; Vous avez su ses résultats; Ils ont dit « bonjour ». It agrees with the subject when it is used with “être”. Ex.: Elle est née; Nous sommes parti(e)s; Ils sont rentrés. Subject (le sujet): A noun phrase that controls the form of the conjugated verb. Ex.: Marie chante; Le chien aboyait; Cette table blanche est neuve; Le livre et le crayon sont sur la table; Vous allez visiter Paris; Nous avons attendu le train; Les étudiants réfléchissaient. Adverb (l’adverbe): A word that describes a verb (or an adjective or another adverb). It indicates manner, degree, time, place. Ex.: lentement; généralement; bien; mal; très; beaucoup; peu; souvent; jamais; toujours; bientôt; tard; ici; là-bas. Preposition (la préposition): A word that links nouns to nouns, nouns to verbs and different parts of a sentence to one another. Ex.: à; de; avec; chez; dans; sur; sous; contre; pour; vers. The prepositions “à” and “de” contract with the articles “le” and “les”: à + le = au ; à + les = aux de + le = du ; de + les = des Object (l’objet): A noun or pronoun that receives the action of the verb. Direct Object (l’objet direct): A noun/pronoun that receives the action of the verb directly, meaning that there is no preposition between the verb and the noun/pronoun. Ex.: Je mange le sandwich/Je le mange; Tu appelles ta mère; Il va comprendre la leçon/Il va la comprendre; Nous avons acheté des légumes/Nous en avons acheté. Elles ont pris ce bus. Indirect Object (l’objet indirect): A noun/pronoun that receives the action of the verb indirectly, meaning that there is a preposition between the verb and the noun/pronoun. Ex.: Je parle de mes voisins; Tu lui donnes un cadeau (donner à une personne); Tu penses à ton cousin; Mes parents vivent en France; Nous allons chez eux; Les enfants jouent avec le ballon.
