Title of the project: Study of song and territorial behavior of male and female robins (Erithacus rubecela) during and outside the breeding season. Summary of the project (15 lines maximum): Bird song is a learned behavior usually regarded as an attribute of males. However, in some species, females may also produce songs. Likewise, in temperate areas, song and territorial behavior are associated with the breeding season, but some few bird species sing and defend a territory year round. A song bird, the European robin Erithacus rubecula, fulfils these specificities. Both male and female robins aggressively defend territories all year round and both sexes sing. The aims of the project will be 1) to compare by analysis the acoustic structures of songs of males and females recorded during the reproductive and the non-reproductive phases; 2) to follow the evolution of male and female songs from year to year; 3) to decipher by playback experiments the coding-decoding processes in the songs of males and females. Until now, the cognitive processes supporting song learning and production in females have been scarcely investigated, and never in the field. Such a study will help in the understanding of the plasticity and evolution of bird songs both in males and females and will bring new insights in the differential coding-decoding strategies of songs used by both sexes to defend a territory. Link to annual evolution of steroid hormone levels in plasma will be established. Field work will be realized upon wild resident birds settled on the Orsay-Gif campus.
