In 1998, P.C. Anastas and J.C. Warner developed 12 principles of Green Chemistry which help show how this can be achieved. This special issue of C.R. Chimie is devoted to this important topic, which covers most of chemistry. In more than 20 years, the field has produced thousands of scientific publications, so the in-depth background information cannot be presented in an issue of this size. By way of conclusion, and for illustrating the role of this field, we would like emphasize the motivation accompanying the 2005 Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded to Yves Chauvin, Robert Grubbs and Richard Schrock: ‘‘This represents a great step forward for Green Chemistry reducing potentially hazardous wastes through smarter production. synthèses vertes, catalyse et catalyseurs, substituts aux solvants organiques, produits verts, technologie verte, chimie et environnement. 1631-0748/$ – see front matter ß 2011 Published by Elsevier Masson SAS on behalf of Académie des sciences. doi:10.1016/j.crci.2011.07.007 620 Green and sustainable chemistry / C.
