Le Nord-Ouest Ardennais occupe depuis l’époque gauloise une position frontalière convoitée. Cette situation géostratégique a été à l’origine d’un climat d’insécurité et d’instabilité politique qui se traduit par la
présence d’un important patrimoine historique fortifié sur le territoire.
Since the days of the Ancient Gauls, North-West Ardennes has occupied a
much-coveted position on the borders. In fact, its geographically strategic
location created a climate of insecurity and instability that explains the
presence of large numbers of fortified heritage buildings here.
De Noordwestelijke Ardennen zijn al sinds de Gallische tijd een
felbevochten grensgebied. Vanwege de geostrategische ligging heerste
hier voortdurend een klimaat van onveiligheid en politieke ongewisheid,
wat tot uitdrukking komt in het aanzienlijke historisch erfgoed en de vele
verdedigingswerken die over de hele streek verspreid liggen.

La région du Nord-Ouest Ardennais est dotée d’un riche patrimoine fortifié. Ceci peut s’expliquer par la
règle des 3 f : frontière, féodalité, fronde.
En effet, depuis la période celte, la contrée est une frontière historique. Véritable boulevard d’invasions,
la trouée de l’Oise et des Ardennes est la proie d’incursions belliqueuses : anglaises, bourguignonnes,
liégeoises durant la guerre de Cent Ans ; prussiennes et russes en 1814-1815 puis allemandes en 1870,
1914 et 1940.
Les grands traités de paix ont tous échoué pour tenter de pacifier la frontière. Les populations ont été
durablement éprouvées et traumatisées par ces combats continuels. Pourtant, malgré l’insécurité tenace,
les massacres et les exactions, les paysans, artisans, seigneurs et ecclésiastiques ont perfectionné les
moyens de se protéger. Les églises et gentilhommières ont été pourvues de canonnières, bretèches,
échauguettes…
Dès l’an mil, la féodalité impose un mode de fortification, signe de l’appropriation d’un fief par un seigneur.
Les fractures franco-françaises, comme les guerres de Religion (1562-1598) et les Frondes (1648-1653)
sont la dernière raison à l’organisation de structures fortifiées. En effet, la contrée est le théâtre de la
huitième et dernière guerre de Religion entre catholiques et calvinistes qui endeuille plusieurs localités
mais participe au renforcement des églises.

Fortified churches and houses in Thiérache and
North-West Ardennes: follow the guide
North-West Ardennes has a large number of fortified historic buildings,
probably because of its location on the border, its erstwhile feudal system
and its periods of unrest.
The area has been a historic border since the days of the Celts. Like a
boulevard designed with invaders in mind, the Oise Gap and the Ardennes
have provided a route for countless invasions by enemies including the
English, Burgundians, and forces from Liège during the Hundred Years’
War, the Prussians and Russians in 1814-1815 and the Germans in 1870,
1914 and 1940.
All attempts at pacifying the border region by drawing up major peace
treaties failed. Local people suffered for years on end, traumatised by
the continuous fighting. Yet despite ongoing insecurity, massacres and
demands, farmers, artisans, noblemen and clergy perfected the means
of protecting themselves - loopholes, bartizans and lookout towers were
added to churches and country houses.
In the year 1,000 A.D., feudalism imposed a method of fortification that
signalled ownership of land by a nobleman. Civil wars such as the Wars
of Religion (1562-1598) and the Fronde Revolts (1648-1653) provided a
reason to fortify buildings, for the last time. The area was the theatre of
the eighth and last War of Religion between Catholics and Protestants
that left several communities in mourning and resulted in the fortification
of churches.

surprising, varied collection of historic buildings and, in front of each,
you’ll find information panels that give you details of the local history and
architecture.

Kerken en versterkte woningen van Thiérache en het
noordwesten van het departement Ardennes, volg

Het noordwesten van het departement Ardennes is begiftigd met een
rijk versterkt patrimonium. Dit kan worden verklaard door de volgende 3
factoren: grens, feodaliteit en verzet.
Het is inderdaad zo dat deze streek sinds de Keltische periode een
historische grens vormt. De doorgang van de Oise en het Ardense gebied
was het geliefde toneel voor invasies en moest het hoofd bieden aan
talrijke oorlogszuchtige invallen: Engelsen, Bourgondiërs en Luikenaars
tijdens de Honderdjarige Oorlog; Pruisen en Russen in 1814-1815 en dan
de Duitsers in 1870, 1914 en 1940.
De grote vredesverdragen slaagden er niet in om de grens gevechtsvrij
te maken. De bevolking werd door deze aanhoudende gevechten zwaar
op de proef gesteld en getraumatiseerd. Maar ondanks de permanente
onzekerheid, de slachtpartijen en andere gewelddaden hebben de
boeren, ambachtslieden, leenheren en geestelijken de middelen om zich
te beschermen verfijnd. De kerken en landhuizen werden uitgerust met
kanonnen en voorzien van erkers, wachttorens...
Vanaf het jaar duizend legt de feodaliteit een bepaalde manier van
vestingbouw op als teken van de inbezitneming van een leengoed door
een leenheer. De Frans-Franse fracturen (burgeroorlogen) evenals de
Godsdienstoorlogen (1562-1598) en de Fronde (1648-1653) vormen de
laatste trigger voor de aanleg van versterkte bouwwerken. In deze streek
wordt immers de achtste en laatste Godsdienstoorlog tussen katholieken
en calvinisten uitgevochten. Deze oorlog heeft heel wat dorpen in rouw
gehuld, maar heeft er ook voor gezorgd dat de kerken werden versterkt.

departement Ardennes’ geeft een overzicht van dit verrassende en
gevarieerde historische patrimonium. Bij de monumenten zelf vind je

Rocroy, a star-shaped walled town
Rocroy, une ville fortifiée
en étoile
Du ciel, Rocroy est une étoile de pierre nichée dans
un écrin de verdure. Située aux portes de la France,
son histoire se perd avec celle des guerres qui ont
agité les frontières au cours des siècles. Cette ville
est intimement liée à ses fortifications. Rocroy
sans rempart, le Grand Condé ne serait jamais venu
provoquer les fameux Tercios espagnols de Philippe
IV qui assiégeaient la cité.
Au moment où le Moyen-Age disparaît et où l’Italie
exporte ses architectes et ses urbanistes, François
1er choisit Rocroy au milieu d’un plateau marécageux
presque inaccessible pour défendre le Royaume.
Les bouches à feu commencent à cracher des
boulets puissants. De verticale, la fortification
devient rasante. Le village est alors une ville
que l’on bastionne. On passe en douceur de la
protection des biens et des personnes à celle du
Royaume. Vauban n’arrivera qu’un siècle et demi
plus tard pour la renforcer et lui donner son aspect
définitif. Il crée alors une double ligne de 26 places
fortes le long de la frontière Nord-Est, le Pré Carré,
dont Rocroy fait partie.

From above, the town of Rocroy is a stone star nestling in lush green
surroundings. Located at the gateway to France, its history is synonymous
with the wars that rocked the borders over the centuries and the town’s
story is closely linked to that of its fortifications. If Rocroy had not had
ramparts, the Great Condé would never have come here to fight Philip IV’s
famous Spanish Tercios who were laying siege to it.
As the Middle Ages reached a close and Italy began exporting its architects
and town planners, François I chose Rocroy, set in the middle of an almost
inaccessible marshy plateau, to defend his kingdom.
Artillery developed and guns began firing huge cannonballs. The
fortifications lost the need for verticality and height. The village became
a town under constant attack. Its priority slowly changed from the
protection of property and people to the protection of the kingdom.
Vauban did not come on the scene until one hundred and fifty years later.
He then strengthened the walls and gave them the appearance they have
today. He also created a double line of 26 fortresses along the NorthEastern border known as the Pré Carré. Rocroy was part of it.

Rocroy, een versterkte stad in stervorm
Vanuit de lucht gezien is het plaatsje Rocroy een stenen ster in een
bedje van groen. Gelegen bij de toegangspoort naar Frankrijk vormt zijn
geschiedenis een aaneenschakeling van oorlogen die de grenzen in de
loop der eeuwen keer op keer in vuur en vlam hebben gezet. Het stadje
is nauw verbonden met zijn vestingwerken. Zonder de omwallingen zou
de Prins van Condé, bijgenaamd de ‘Grand Condé’ nooit naar Rocroy
zijn opgerukt om er de geduchte ‘Tercios’ (regimenten) van de Spaanse
koning Filips IV uit te dagen die beleg hadden geslagen voor de stad.
In een periode waarin de Middeleeuwen uitdoven en er vanuit Italië een
hele stroom nieuwlichtende architecten en stedenbouwers het land
binnenkomen, kiest koning Frans I Rocroy uit als verdedigingsplaats voor
het Koninkrijk, omdat het gelegen is op een vrijwel ontoegankelijke,
moerasachtige hoogvlakte.
In die tijd beginnen de vuurmonden krachtige kanonskogels te spuwen.
De verdedigingswerken zijn niet langer hoog oprijzend maar liggen
strategisch afgevlakt in het land. Het dorp wordt een stad waar een
bolwerk omheen wordt gebouwd. Langzaamaan komt de nadruk te
liggen op de verdediging van het Koninkrijk en raakt de bescherming
van louter de plaatselijke goederen en bewoners op de achtergrond. Pas
anderhalve eeuw later wordt het bolwerk verder versterkt door Vauban
en krijgt het zijn definitieve aanzien. De beroemde vestingbouwkundige
bouwt aan de zogeheten Pré Carré (‘vierkante weide’), een grondgebied
dat langs alle grenzen verdedigd werd en onder meer door een dubbele
linie van 26 versterkte plaatsen langs de noordoostgrens, waar Rocroy
deel van uitmaakt.

Le Château de l’Echelle
Sis sur des hauteurs proches du «Grant Mont», limite des vallées de la Sormonne au Nord et de l’Audry au
Sud, le village de l’Echelle est certainement l’un des plus typiques de la région. Face à l’église, le château du
16e siècle a conservé une allure imposante avec son plan carré flanqué de tours massives. Dans le village
de L’Echelle, vous pourrez également découvrir le musée de l’Ecole d’Hier, l’église, l’ancien lavoir ainsi qu’un

Located on the hilltops near «Grant Mont», bounded by the Sormonne
Valley to the north and Audry Valley to the south, the village of Echelle is
undoubtedly one of the most typical Ardennes villages in the region. The
16th-century castle opposite the church is still an impressive sight. It is
laid out as a square, flanked by massive towers. In the village of L’Echelle,
you will also find a school museum (musée de l’Ecole d’Hier), church, old
wash-house and arboretum.

Gelegen hoog op de heuvels in de buurt van de «Grant Mont», die de grens
vormt tussen het dal van de Sormonne in het noorden en het dal van de

karakteristieke dorpen van deze streek. Naast de kerk ziet het 16e eeuwse
kasteel er indrukwekkend uit, met zijn vierkante grondplan geflankeerd
door massieve torens. In het dorp L’Echelle kunt u verder nog het museum
van de School van Gisteren bezichtigen, evenals de kerk, de oude wasplaats

To see the other fortifications in Ardennes, follow the Fortifications
Trail. From the Meuse Valley to the Chiers Valley and across the Rocroy
plateau, the fortresses dotted along the route are reminders of an
eventful history. They include the Charlemont Fortress built by Charles
V in Givet, the largest fortress in Europe in Sedan, the star-shaped walled
town of Rocroy and the last fort on the Maginot Line in La Ferté. The
destiny of France and Europe was played out on several occasions in the
Ardennes: Rocroy (1643) and Sedan (1870-1940). Following this Trail is an
unforgettable history lesson.

Le château Féodal de Montcornet en Ardenne
Le château de Montcornet est dans les Ardennes un
des plus grands vestiges de la fortification médiévale.
Ce « véritable colisée féodal » selon l’expression de
Michelet est classé monument historique depuis 1926.
L’association des amis de Montcornet fondée en 1970
par l’abbé Bernard Lussigny s’applique à mettre en
valeur le site des Moncornet, Noyers, Croy, Gonzague,
Mazarin et Richelieu. Une visite d’une heure et demie
permet de découvrir le château : salles d’armes,
barbacane, donjon, souterrains mais aussi musée et
jardin médiéval. Des plans de visite et des parcours
éducatifs pour enfants et adolescents sont à disposition
à l’accueil du château. Ouverture de Pâques au 30
octobre : les samedi et dimanche de 14h à 18h. Juillet
et août : tous les jours de 14h à 18h. Fermeture le lundi.

Montcornet Feudal Castle in ‘Ardenne’
Feodaal kasteel van Montcornet en Ardenne
Montcornet Castle is one of the largest remaining sections of the mediaeval
fortifications in Ardennes. The historian Michelet described it as a “veritable
feudal coliseum” and it has been a listed building since 1926.
The Association of the Friends of Montcornet, founded in 1970 by Father
Bernard Lussigny, is working to enhance Moncornet, Noyers, Croy, Gonzague,
Mazarin and Richelieu.
A tour of the castle takes 90 minutes and includes the guardroom, barbican,
keep, underground passageways, museum and mediaeval garden.
Visitor maps and educational tours for children and teens are available at
the information desk. Open Easter to 30 October: weekends only, 2pm to
6pm. July and August: open daily except Mondays, 2pm to 6pm. Château de

Het kasteel van Montcornet is in de Ardennen één van de grootste
overblijfselen van de middeleeuwse verdedigingswerken. Het kasteel ‘een
waar feodaal colosseum’ zoals Michelet het noemde, is in 1926 op de lijst van
historische monumenten geplaatst. De Vereniging Vrienden van het kasteel
van Montcornet, in 1970 opgericht door abt Bernard Lussigny, legt zich
toe op de valorisatie van de historische plaatsen Moncornet, Noyers, Croy,
Gonzague, Mazarin en Richelieu. Een bezoek van anderhalf uur om het kasteel
te verkennen: de wapenzaal, de schietgaten, de donjon, de onderaardse
gewelven, maar ook het museum en de middeleeuwse tuin. Plannetjes voor
het bezoek en educatieve parcours voor kinderen en jongeren zijn verkrijgbaar
bij de ontvangstbalie van het kasteel. Van Pasen tot 30 oktober: geopend op
zaterdag en zondag van 14.00 tot 18.00u. Juli en augustus: dagelijks van 14.00

The Thiérache Fortified Churches Trail
From Charleville-Mézières on the edge of Aisne, the signposted Thiérache
Fortified Churches Trail forms a 150-kilometre loop that winds its way
through a landscape of hills, hedgerows and meadows between the
forests of Signy-le-Petit and Signy-l’Abbaye. This is an area of outstandingly
rich architectural heritage. In addition to the abbeys, castle and fortified
houses, the fifteen fortified churches serve as impressive reminders of
the past with their corner towers, keeps, slit windows and lookouts.

Aisne vormt de gemarkeerde route van de versterkte kerken van de
Thiérachestreek een lus van 150 km die tussen de bossen van Signy-lePetit en Signy-l’Abbaye door heuvels en coulisselandschap loopt. De
rijkdom van het bouwkundig erfgoed is hier uitzonderlijk. Niet alleen de
abdijen, kastelen en versterkte huizen, maar ook de vijftien versterkte

donjons, spiedende schietgaten en overige erkertorens.

Restes de l’église abbatiale de Bonnefontaine
L’ancienne abbaye cistercienne de Bonnefontaine, située dans la commune de Blanchefosse-et-Bay, est
aujourd’hui une propriété privée. On peut apercevoir, depuis la rue du Moulin, le pignon du transept droit
de l’ancienne église abbatiale avec sa rosace. Fondée en 1175 par Nicolas III de Rumigny, cette abbaye,
malgré des pillages successifs devient très florissante. Son imprimerie fut longtemps renommée. Ses
moines, originaires au début de Signy-l’Abbaye, édifièrent une église gothique au XIIIe siècle. Celle-ci était
reliée au monastère par un cloître. Le palais abbatial remonte quant à lui au XVIIe siècle. Sous l’influence de
la richesse et de l’oisiveté, les moines se relâchèrent vis-à-vis de leurs règles qu’ils trouvaient trop sévères.
À la Révolution, il n’y avait plus que huit religieux à Bonnefontaine.Devenue propriété nationale, l’Abbaye
fut vendue en 1792. Propriété privée, visible uniquement de l’extérieur.
Bonnefontaine Abbey

The old Cistercian abbey of Bonnefontaine, in the town of Blanchefosseet-Bay, is now private property. From Rue du Moulin, you can see the gable
on the right arm of the transept in the abbey church, with its rose window.
Founded in 1175 by Nicolas III of Rumigny, the abbey flourished despite
successive waves of pillaging. Its printworks were famous for many years.
Its monks, originally from Signy-l’Abbaye, built a Gothic church in the 13th
century. The church was connected to the monastery by a cloister. The
abbot’s palace dates from the 17th century. As the monks accumulated
wealth, they became lazy and gradually relaxed the rules that they found
too arduous. By the time of the French Revolution, there were only eight
monks left in Bonnefontaine. The abbey became national property and
was sold in 1792.

De voormalige cisterciënzer abdij van Bonnefontaine, gelegen in de
gemeente Blanchefosse-et-Bay, is tegenwoordig privébezit. Vanaf de Rue
du Moulin is de topgevel met roosvenster van het rechter dwarsschip van de
voormalige abdijkerk te zien. De abdij, gesticht in 1175 door Nicolas III van
Rumigny, komt tot grote bloei ondanks de talloze plunderingen waaraan hij
ten prooi viel. De drukkerij van de abdij was lange tijd zeer gerenommeerd.
De monniken, in het begin geboortig uit Signy-l’Abbaye, bouwden er in de
13e eeuw een gotische kerk bij, die via een kloostergang met het klooster
verbonden was. Het abtspaleis gaat terug tot de 17e eeuw. Gaandeweg
bedorven door weelde en ledigheid namen de monniken het niet meer zo
nauw met hun kloosterregels, die ze te streng vonden. Bij het uitbreken
van de Franse revolutie waren er nog maar acht geestelijken over in
Bonnefontaine. Na eerst staatsbezit te zijn geweest, werd de Abdij in 1792
verkocht. Privébezit, alleen van de buitenkant te bezichtigen.

LE CHATELET-SUR-SORMONNE
La Tour Daudèce
Niché au creux du Val de la Sormonne, le village du Châtelet-sur-Sormonne est
surveillé par une tour qui surplombe la rivière. Il s’agit de la tour Daudèce subsistant
de l’ancienne maison forte (très remaniée). Elle fut apparemment édifiée sur un
site très ancien, puisqu’on a trouvé en 1792 dans des démolitions partielles, des
pièces de monnaie romaine.
The Daudece Tower
Nestling in the Sormonne Valley, the village of Le Châtelet-sur-Sormonne
is watched over by a tower high above the river. This is the Daudece
Tower, a reminder of the old fortified house (extensively altered). It is said
to have been erected on a very old site. In 1792, when it was partially
demolished, Roman coins were found here.

Sormonne en wordt bewaakt door een toren die uitkijkt over de rivier.
De Daudece Toren is een overblijfsel van het vroegere versterkte huis

een plaats die in de oudheid ook al werd gebruikt, want in 1792 zijn bij
sloopwerkzaamheden Romeinse munten gevonden.
HANNAPPES
L’église Saint Jean-Baptiste de Hannappes
De style ogival à planchette et de plan en croix latine, l’église conserve un aspect
massif et trapu propre aux églises romanes. Les chapiteaux à crochets du portail
sont également d’inspiration romane. Cependant le chœur, le transept et les
chapelles sont des témoins du premier âge gothique : arcs brisés reposant sur
des colonnettes (portail), croisées d’ogives (pour les autres parties). Non fortifiée,
cette église a dû, cependant, servir de refuge. En effet, il existait jadis un puits.
Church of St. John the Baptist, Hannappes
The Church of St. John the Baptist in Hannappes deserves to be much
better-known than it is. It is a beautiful building of outstanding interest
(it is a listed building). Built with ribbed lancet arching and laid out in the
form of a Latin Cross, the church has nevertheless retained the squat,
solid appearance of Romanesque churches. The crocheted capitals on the
entrance were also of Romanesque inspiration. Yet the chancel, transept
and chapels are fine examples of Early Gothic with their pointed arches
supported by colonnettes (entrance) and ribbed vaulting elsewhere.
Although not fortified, the church was often used as a refuge and used
to contain a well.
Saint Jean-Baptiste kerk van Hannappes
De Saint Jean-Baptiste kerk in Hannappes is onverdiend weinig bekend bij
het grote publiek. Dit bouwwerk is nochtans van grote kwaliteit en zeer
interessant uit bouwkundig oogpunt (het staat op de lijst van historische
monumenten). Met zijn puntbogenstijl en grondplan in de vorm van een
latijns kruis heeft de kerk het typische massieve en gedrongen silhouet van
romaanse kerken. De kapitelen met hogels op het portaal zijn eveneens
geïnspireerd op de romaanse bouwstijl. Maar het koor, het dwarsschip
en de kapellen getuigen van de invloed van de vroege gotiek, met hun op
pilaren rustende spitsbogen (portaal) en kruisbogen (overige ruimten). De
kerk was weliswaar niet versterkt, maar heeft toch waarschijnlijk gediend
als vluchtplaats, gezien de vroegere aanwezigheid van een put.
RENWEZ

Classée monument historique en 1852, déclassée
en 1887 puis reclassée le 6 mai 1913
Construite au XIVe siècle puis reconstruite fin du
XVe et début du XVIe siècle.
Renwez et son église furent détruits en 1478 par
les troupes de Maximilien d’Autriche. Suite à une
courte invasion des Bourguignons ravageant une
quarantaine de villages au pays d’Ardenne, le bourg
fut incendié, son église brûlée avec les paysans du
lieu qui avaient cru y trouver refuge.
Church of Our Lady of Renwez.
Listed as a historic monument in 1852, then delisted in
1887 and relisted on 6 May 1913
Built in the 14th century, then rebuilt in the late 15th and early 16th
centuries. Renwez and its church were razed to the ground in 1478
by Maximilian of Austria’s troops. After a short-lived invasion by the
Burgundians, who destroyed some forty villages in the Ardenne area,
the village was burnt to the ground and its church set alight, with the
peasants who had sought refuge inside.
Philippe de Croy, Lord of Montcornet and Renwez, had the church rebuilt
in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. In 1917, the Germans removed
the silver, copper and pewter organ pipes. Air raids in 1940 did no damage
to the stained-glass windows – they had been taken down and stored
in a safe place. More recently, the church has undergone restoration,
particularly on the roof, bell tower, West Front and south gable. All that
remains of the church destroyed in 1478 are the entrance and the first
span of the original nave.
Philippe de CROY, seigneur de Montcornet et
Renwez, fait reconstruire l’église à la fin du
XVème et au début du XVIème siècle. En 1917, les
allemands enlèvent les tuyaux en argent, cuivre,
étain de l’orgue. Les bombardements de 1940 ne
détruisent pas les vitraux qui ont été déposés en
lieu sûr.Plus récemment, l’église a fait l’objet de
restaurations, notamment la toiture, le clocher, la
façade ouest et le pignon sud. De l’édifice détruit
en 1478, il reste le portail et la première travée de
l’ancienne nef.

Gebouwd in de 14de eeuw en vervolgens herbouwd aan het einde van
de 15de en het begin van de 16de eeuw. Renwez en haar kerk werden in
1478 door de troepen van Maximiliaan van Oostenrijk vernield. Tijdens
een korte invasie van de Bourgondiërs die een veertigtal dorpen in het
Ardense land verwoestten, werd deze plek in de as gelegd, samen met de
kerk en de inwoners die hun toevlucht in de kerk hadden gezocht. Philippe de CROY, landsheer van Montcornet en Renwez, liet de kerk
heroprichten aan het einde van de 15de en het begin van de 16de eeuw.
In 1917 werden de orgelpijpen van zilver, koper en tin door de Duitsers
weggehaald. Bij de bombardementen van 1940 werden de glas-inloodramen gespaard; deze waren tijdig in veiligheid gebracht Nog niet
zo lang geleden werd de kerk gerestaureerd, met name het dak, de
klokkentoren, de westelijke gevel en het zuidelijke rondeel.
Van het in 1478 verwoeste gebouw zijn het portaal en de eerste travee
van het oude kerkschip nog over.

Maison Forte de Rumigny, la Cour des Prés
Cette ancienne maison forte fut construite en 1546 par le Prévost de Rumigny, Louis Martin, qui répondit à l’appel de François 1er. En effet, le roi souhaitait que l’on fortifiât la région pour mieux protéger la population des
invasions des « Impériaux » de Charles Quint. C’est dans l’ancien château de Rumigny, en 1643, que la célèbre
bataille de Rocroy fut décidée par le Grand Condé. Jean-Baptiste Piette, descendant de Louis Martin, dut détruire
le donjon et le pont-levis pendant la Terreur. Sous le Directoire, il restaura sa maison et lui ajouta une tour au Sud.
Edouard Piette, son petit-fils, fut l’un des « Pères Fondateurs » de la science préhistorique. Il rassembla à Rumigny
tous les objets de ses fouilles qu’il légua ensuite au Musée de Saint-Germain-en-Laye. La Cour des Prés souvent
transmise par les femmes, est toujours restée dans la même famille, aussi chacun lui a laissé un peu de son époque.
Dans le cadre historique de la Cour des Prés, des soirées suivies d’un dîner aux chandelles, sont proposées dans les
salles Renaissance durant la saison estivale. Une partie de la demeure est aménagée en chambres d’hôtes.

This fortified house was built in 1546 for the Provost of Rumigny, Louis
Martin, in answer to a call from King François I to fortify the region and
provide better protection for the population against invasion by Charles
V’s imperial troops.
It was in the old castle in Rumigny, in 1643, that the Great Condé decided
to fight the famous Battle of Rocroy. Jean-Baptiste Piette, a descendent
of Louis Martin, had to demolish the keep and drawbridge during the
Reign of Terror. When the Directoire took over government, he restored
his house and added a tower on the south side. Edouard Piette, his
grandson, was one of the “founding fathers” of the science of prehistory.
He brought all the items he uncovered during digs to Rumigny, later
bequeathing them to the museum in Saint-Germain-en-Laye. La Cour des
Prés, which has often been passed on down the female line, has always
remained in the same family and each owner has left something of his/
her own period of history.
Evening functions with candlelit dinners are held in the Renaissance
rooms of the historic Cour des Prés during the summer season. Part of
the house has been made into B&B accommodation.

Het is hier, in het vroegere kasteel van Rumigny, dat de beroemde
slag om Rocroy in 1643 werd beklonken door de ‘Grand Condé’. JeanBaptiste Piette, een nazaat van Louis Martin, heeft tijdens de Terreur
onder dwang de slottoren en de valbrug moeten afbreken. Tijdens de
bewindsperiode van het Directoire restaureerde hij zijn huis en voegde
hij aan de zuidkant een toren toe. Zijn kleinzoon, Edouard Piette, was één
van de grondleggers van de prehistorische wetenschap. Hij verzamelde
in Rumigny alle voorwerpen die hij had opgegraven en schonk zijn
verzameling na zijn dood aan het Museum van Saint-Germain-en-Laye. ‘La
Cour des Prés’, vaak via de vrouwelijke lijn overerfd, is altijd in dezelfde
familie gebleven, en iedere generatie heeft het een toets van zijn
eigen tijd meegegeven. In het historische kader van ‘La Cour des Prés’
worden in het zomerseizoen feestelijke avonden met diner bij kaarslicht

ou dolmen de la Ganguille
est une allée couverte située à Saint-Marcel. Le Dolmen de
la Ganguille situé à Giraumont date d’environ 2000 ans avant
notre ère. Il mesure environ 5 mètres de long, trois dalles de
grès pesant jusqu’à 10 tonnes couvrent deux chambres et
sont supportées par des murs en pierres appareillées. Une
sépulture gauloise adventice a été déposée par la suite à son
flanc extérieur.
The Giraumont passage grave or Ganguille dolmen
Is located in Saint-Marcel. The Ganguille Dolmen in Giraumont dates from approximately
2,000 years B.C. and measures some 5 metres in length. Three slabs of sandstone
weighing up to 10 tonnes cover two chambers and are supported by walls with
stone bonding. A Gallic grave was later built on the side of the original dolmen, an
inappropriate addition to the construction.

Is een megalithisch bouwwerk dat zich bevindt in Saint-Marcel. De dolmen van Ganguille
in Giraumont dateert van ongeveer 2000 jaar voor onze tijdrekening. Hij is zowat 5
meter lang. Drie zandstenen platen van om en bij de 10 ton dekken twee kamers af en
worden ondersteund door muren van in verband gelegde stenen. Later werd er aan de
buitenflank een Gallisch graf toegevoegd.

Het contrastrijke landschap van de noordwestelijke Ardennen kan
worden ingedeeld in drie onderscheiden geomorfologische gebieden
die het departement kenmerken: de heuvelachtige uitlopers van de
Ardennen (Thiérache), de Voorardense depressie (Dal van de Sormonne)
en het Ardennengebergte (Plateau van Rocroy).
Le Plateau de Rocroy
Au nord-est du territoire, s’étend le Plateau de Rocroy, vaste plateau largement boisé et parsemé de
clairières plus ou moins importantes, à l’intérieur desquelles ont été bâtis les villages et hameaux. Il couvre
un territoire qui s’étend de la frontière belge à une ligne Signy-le-Petit/Renwez. L’altitude moyenne est de
350 mètres environ, mais décroît sensiblement vers le sud et l’ouest. La nature géologique du sous-sol rend
difficile la culture. Le Plateau de Rocroy possède des milieux écologiquement variés, dont notamment les
rièzes, milieux tourbeux qui sont particulièrement intéressants au niveau de la faune et de la flore.

To the north-east of the area is the vast Rocroy Plateau carpeted with
woodland and dotted with clearings large and small in which villages and
hamlets have been built. It covers an area stretching from the Belgian
border to a line between Signy-le-Petit and Renwez. The average altitude
is approximately 350 metres but is much lower to the south and west. The
geological nature of the subsoil makes crop growing difficult. The Rocroy
Plateau has various ecological locations including the “rièzes”, peat bogs
with particularly interesting flora and fauna.
In het noordoosten van het grondgebied ontvouwt zich het Plateau van
Rocroy. Het is een uitgestrekte, bosrijke hoogvlakte, bezaaid met kleine
en grotere open plekken waarin de dorpen en gehuchten hun plaats
hebben gevonden. Het gebied strekt zich uit van de Belgische grens tot
aan een denkbeeldige lijn tussen Signy-le-Petit en Renwez. De gemiddelde
hoogte is ongeveer 350 meter, maar neemt snel af in zuidelijke en
westelijke richting. De geologische aard van de ondergrond bemoeilijkt
het verbouwen van gewassen. Het Plateau van Rocroy bezit een uiterst
gevarieerd natuurlijk milieu, met name in de veenachtige gebieden of
‘rièzes’ die bijzonder de moeite waard zijn vanwege hun flora en fauna.

La Thiérache Ardennaise
Au sud-ouest du territoire se trouve la frange orientale de la vaste région naturelle «Thiérache» qui s’étend
sur les départements de l’Aisne, du Nord, des Ardennes et sur une partie de la Belgique. Le relief assez
vallonné, donne un paysage de collines. Le point culminant se situe à la Butte de Marlemont (292 m.).
La Thiérache Ardennaise est surnommée «la Petite Normandie» en raison de la présence de bocage et
d’élevage. De nombreux cours d’eau prennent naissance sur cette partie du territoire comme l’Audry,
l’Aube ou la Serre.

To the south-west of the area is the eastern edge of the vast natural
region of «Thiérache” which stretches over the départements of Aisne,
Nord and Ardennes and juts into Belgium. This is an area of rolling hills
and dales. The highest point is the Butte de Marlemont (292 metres).
Thiérache Ardennaise is nicknamed «Little Normandy» because of its
hedgerows, pastures and stock breeding. Numerous rivers rise in this area
e.g. the Audry, Aube and Serre.
In het zuidwesten van het departement bevindt zich de oostelijke strook
van het immense natuurgebied ‘Thiérache’ dat zich uitstrekt over de
Franse departementen Aisne, Nord en Ardennes, en over een gedeelte
van België. Het reliëf wordt doorsneden door dalen, wat het landschap
een heuvelachtig karakter geeft. Het hoogste punt is de Butte van
Marlemont (292 m.). De streek Thiérache Ardennaise wordt ook wel ‘Klein
Normandië’ genoemd vanwege zijn coulisselandschap en veeteelt. Veel
riviertjes en waterstromen ontspringen op dit deel van het grondgebied,
zoals de Audry, de Aube en de Serre.

Lac des Vieilles Forges (Pavillon Bleu)
Au bord du lac des Vieilles Forges, le Conseil général des Ardennes
a aménagé un vaste complexe touristique. Ce lac de 150 hectares
permet la pratique de nombreuses activités nautiques (baignade,
planche à voile, voile…) et possède des berges spécialement
conçues pour la pêche. Une baignade surveillée et aménagée

La Vallée de la Sormonne
Le Val de la Sormonne est un couloir occupé par des prairies et des cultures, situé entre les Crêtes
Préardennaises au Sud et le Massif Ardennais au Nord. Il correspond à la dépression Préardennaise. Large
en amont de Laval-Morency et en aval de Sormonne, la vallée s’encaisse et est chahutée au niveau de la
commune du Chatelet-sur-Sormonne. La Sormonne traverse le territoire en formant une diagonale allant
du nord-ouest au sud-est avant de se jeter dans la Meuse à Charleville-Mézières.

The Sormonne Valley is a corridor filled with meadows and fields of crops.
It lies between the Pre-Ardennes peaks in the south and the uplands
of Ardennes in the north. In fact, it corresponds to the Pre-Ardennes
depression. It is wide upstream from Laval-Morency and downstream
from Sormonne, but becomes narrower and rugged around the town of
Chatelet-sur-Sormonne. The River Sormonne flows diagonally through
the area in a north-west to south-east direction before joining the River
Meuse in Charleville-Mézières.
Het Dal van de Sormonne vormt een doorgang bedekt met weiden en
landbouwgronden tussen de voorlopers van de Ardennen in het zuiden
en het Ardennenmassief in het noorden. Dit is de Voorardense depressie.
Stroomopwaarts van Laval-Morency en stroomafwaarts van Sormonne is
het dal breed, maar het wordt steiler en ruiger bij het plaatsje Le Chateletsur Sormonne. De Sormonne doorsnijdt het gebied langs een diagonale

complex on the banks of Vieilles Forges Lake. The stretch of water covers
an area of 150 hectares and is suitable for many different water sports
(swimming, wind surfing, sailing etc.). Its banks have been specially
designed for anglers. A sandy beach, with lifesaver in attendance and
public toilets, is open for three months of the year. Playgrounds, picnic
areas and a trim course round off the leisure facilities that are so popular
with holidaymakers.

important destination for countless pilgrims from all over Europe. Today,
you can walk in their footsteps by following the path between Namur and

In de Middeleeuwen was Santiago de Compostela de belangrijkste
bedevaartsplaats waar talloze pelgrims vanuit heel Europa naar toe

La tourbière de Gué d’Hossus est un espace fragile accueillant une flore et une faune diversifiée. Droséra,
Orchis des sphaignes, Triton alpestre, Libellules en tout genre peuvent notamment y être observés, en
prenant bien garde de rester sur les caillebotis. Pour les curieux qui souhaitent s’y aventurer accompagnés,
le Parc Naturel Régional des Ardennes y mène une sortie nature annuellement dans le cadre de ses
“Rendez-vous du Parc”.

The Gué d’Hossus peat bog is a fragile area with a wide range of flora
and fauna. Sundew, marsh orchids, alpine newts and all types of dragonfly
can be seen here but visitors should take care to remain on the wooden
walkways. For those who would like a guided visit, Ardennes’ Regional
Country Park (PNR) organises an annual excursion as part of its “Rendezvous du Parc” event.

Vehicles : The centre has 10 go-karts with 4-stroke 270 cc engines and 6
junior go-karts with 4-stroke 100 cc engines.
Age 12+ for 270 cc “adult” go-karts (minimum height 1.50 m)
Age 7+ for “junior” 100 cc go-karts (minimum height 1.24 m)
NEW! ! ! Ours is the only track in Ardennes with two 2-seater go-karts.
Take a trial run: have a go on the track with one of our track staff. Or hire
the kart for 2 people. For obvious safety reasons, adult and junior karts
cannot be on the track at the same time.

volwassenen en deze voor kinderen niet gelijktijdig rijden.

Musée de l’Ecole d’Hier
Dans l’ancienne salle de classe du village de l’Echelle se trouve le musée de l’Ecole d’Hier. Une atmosphère
de la bonne vieille «Communale» est reconstituée avec du matériel d’époque qui permet de se replonger
dans l’Ecole du siècle dernier : tableau noir, bouliers, bureau de maître, pupitres d’écolier avec leurs encriers
de porcelaine, armoires vitrées, etc.
Il est possible de feuilleter de vieux cahiers, des manuels scolaires et bien plus encore.
Dans ce cadre, des candidats ont voulu revivre ou découvrir l’atmosphère du célèbre «certificat d’études».
A plusieurs reprises, d’autres ont retrouvé la nostalgie d’écrire à la plume et à l’encre violette sur du papier
«écolier».
D’autres initiatives sont proposées et permettent d’évoquer les souvenirs, ainsi que le chemin parcouru
par l’Ecole d’aujourd’hui.

School Museum
Museum van de School van Gisteren
Housed in the old classroom in the village of L’Echelle is a school museum
that recreates the atmosphere of a good old country school with
equipment from bygone days to show visitors what schools were like in
the last century – blackboard, abaci, teacher’s desk, school desks with
their porcelain inkwells, glass-fronted cupboards etc.
Visitors can flick through old exercise books, school books etc.
In this setting, certain people wanted to relive or discover the atmosphere
of the famous «qualifying examination». On several occasions, other
visitors nostalgically wrote with dip pens and purple ink on «school»
paper.
In addition to visits, other initiatives allow visitors to think back to the old
days and appreciate the changes made between then and now.

In het voormalige klaslokaal van het dorp L’Echelle is het museum van
de School van Gisteren ingericht. De sfeer van vroeger herleeft in dit
lokaal van een gemeenteschooltje uit de vorige eeuw, ingericht met
authentieke schoolspullen: schoolbord, telramen, bureau van de meester,
schoolbanken met porseleinen inktpotjes, vitrinekasten, enz.
U kunt er bladeren in oude schriften en schoolboeken, maar er is nog veel
meer te beleven.
In dit decor uit grootmoederstijd hebben sommige kandidaten
de sfeer van het examen voor het beroemde ‘certificat d’études’
(lagereschooldiploma) opnieuw beleefd of ontdekt. Anderen hebben
bij meerdere gelegenheden weer nostalgisch hun pen in de paarse inkt
gedoopt en op schoolpapier met lijntjes geschreven.
Buiten de bezichtiging worden ook andere initiatieven ontplooid om
de herinnering aan vroeger levend te houden of inzicht te geven in het
ontstaan van de school van nu.

streekproducten en typisch Ardense gerechten aan. Alle voorgestelde
activiteiten worden begeleid door een uitermate competent pedagogisch
team. Bezoek aan het landbouwbedrijf en kennismaking met het leven
van de veehouder, de melkproducent. Wandelen en spoorzoeken in de
weiden, met het gezin of vrienden, voor een dag of met verblijf in de

The visitors’ centre is an all-timber structure on piles. It provides storage
for large equipment. Don’t miss the electronically-equipped museum
rooms with their various themes, models, puppets etc.
Outside, use an audioguide in one of four languages to visit the museum,
take a stroll for 1.8 km through the forest and see the 35 tableaux with
wooden figures that bring the various types of work in the forest to life.

RIMOGNE
Le village de l’ardoise
L’ardoise est un élément essentiel du patrimoine de Rimogne, qui fut pendant des siècles un haut lieu de
l’exploitation ardoisière en France. Le village en garde une empreinte encore très présente dans ses rues
et nombre de ses bâtiments et habitations. Dès l’entrée de la commune, vous découvrirez l’alignement
caractéristique des anciens logements des ardoisiers et les murs de soutènement des verdous, les terrils
de résidus d’ardoise.
Puis très vite, vous apercevrez le sommet du chevalement métallique du Puits Saint Quentin.
Il s’élève à quelques 25 m au cœur du village, dont il est quasiment l’emblème. Il servait à abriter le treuil
d’un ascenseur qui surplombait, jusqu’en 1970, la dernière mine en exploitation.
Vous visiterez ensuite la Maison de l’ardoise. Installé dans les bâtiments de l’ancienne centrale électrique
des ardoisières de Rimogne, ce musée connaît une nouvelle jeunesse : l’ensemble de son parcours de visite
a été revu. Il offre une expérience originale autour de l’épopée ardoisière du Moyen-âge au XXe siècle.
Interactive et vivante, la visite vous donnera l’impression de descendre au fond de la fosse. Muni d’une
tablette et guidé par la voix d’un ardoisier, vous découvrirez les techniques d’extraction et les conditions de
vie des ouvriers et de leurs familles, avant de vous pencher au-dessus d’un impressionnant puits de 185 m.
À noter que la Maison de l’ardoise est aussi un lieu de diffusion culturel et qu’elle accueille aussi
régulièrement dans son cadre exceptionnel des évènements et des expositions artistiques.
Et si vous avez envie de prolonger votre séjour dans le village de l’ardoise, vous pourrez passer une nuit
dans des gîtes de tout confort, aménagés dans les anciens bâtiments de la briqueterie.

The Slate Village
Het dorp van de leisteen
Slate is a fundamental feature of local heritage in Rimogne, a town that,
for hundreds of years, was one of France’s main slate producers. Memories
of the industry are still very much alive here in the village streets and
many of its buildings and houses. At the entrance to the village, you’ll see
the typical rows of slateworkers’ houses and the retaining walls holding
back the heaps of waste from the slate quarry.
Then, very soon, you see the top of the metal headframe above the Saint
Quentin Shaft.
It rises to a height of 25 metres in the centre of the village and is
something of an icon. It used to contain the machinery for the lift above
the last quarry, until 1970.
Your next stop will be the visitors’ centre, the “Maison de l’ardoise”.
Housed in the buildings of the former power station used by the slate
quarriers of Rimogne, the museum has recently been given a facelift and
the entire layout has been redesigned. It provides an unusual experience
of slate quarrying from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.
The visit, which is lively and interactive, gives you the impression that you
have travelled down to the bottom of the quarry. Equipped with a tablet
and guided by the voice of a quarry worker, you’ ll learn about extraction
techniques and get a glimpse of the living conditions of workers and their
families. You’ll then reach a platform overlooking an impressive shaft 185
metres deep.
N.B. The visitors’ centre is also an arts centre and the fabulous
surroundings are often used as the backdrop for special events and art
exhibitions.
If you’d like to extend your stay in the Slate Village, why not spend the
night in one of the very comfortable gîtes at the former brickworks.

De leisteen is een essentieel onderdeel van het patrimonium van het
dorp Rimogne waar zich eeuwenlang de belangrijkste leisteengroeven
van Frankrijk bevonden. De sporen hiervan zijn nog duidelijk zichtbaar
in de straten en de gebouwen en woningen van het dorp. Zodra je de
gemeentegrens oversteekt zie je de netjes opgelijnde verblijven van
de vroegere arbeiders van de leisteengroeve en de steunmuren van de
‘verdous’, de bergen van leisteenafval.
En dan tekent zich onmiddellijk de top van de schachttoren van de ‘put
van Saint Quentin’ af.
Hij is 25 meter hoog en staat midden in het dorp waarvan hij zo goed als
het symbool is. In de toren bevond zich de lier van de lift die tot 1970
uitstak over de laatste actieve mijn.
Vervolgens breng je een bezoek aan het ‘Maison de l’Ardoise’, het
leisteenhuis, dat ondergebracht is in de gebouwen van de oude
elektrische centrale van de leisteengroeven van Rimogne. Dit museum
kent een tweede jeugd: het volledige bezoekersparcours werd
herbekeken en laat je nu op originele wijze kennismaken met het epos
van de leisteen, van de middeleeuwen tot de 20ste eeuw.
Interactief en dynamisch: je krijgt de indruk dat je ook echt afdaalt in de
put. Gewapend met een tablet en geleid door de stem van een arbeider
in de groeve ontdek je hoe de leisteen werd gewonnen en hoe de
werknemers en hun gezinnen toen leefden, voordat je je buigt over een
indrukwekkende put met een diepte van 185 meter.
Het ‘Maison de l’Ardoise’ is ook een culturele trefplaats en
organiseert in dit buitengewone kader regelmatig evenementen en
kunsttentoonstellingen.
En als je zin hebt om nog even te blijven hangen in het dorp van de
leisteen, kun je de nacht doorbrengen in een van de comfortabele
vakantieverblijven in de oude gebouwen van de steenbakkerij.
Heropend vanaf april 2016. Het hele jaar op zaterdag en zondag geopend
en door de week op afspraak (gesloten op maandag).

Musée de la Bataille de Rocroy et de la Guerre de trente ans
Au cœur d’une guerre de Trente Ans dévastatrice, le 19 mai 1643, le nom de Rocroy entre dans l’histoire de
France. L’Histoire, la grande, sort alors le village de son anonymat, et pendant des décennies, les écoliers de
France vont étudier, ce que les historiens considèrent comme l’une des dix plus grandes victoires militaires
de toute l’histoire de notre pays.
L’hostilité entre le royaume de France et celui d’Espagne remontait à 1519, lorsque François 1er échouait
face à Charles le Quint pour le titre d’Empereur d’Allemagne. Après l’assassinat d’Henri IV, le futur roi Louis
XIII, épouse Anne d’Autriche, fille du roi d’Espagne Philippe IV. La défenestration de Prague, le 23 mai
1618 sonne le départ de la guerre de Trente Ans, qui enflamme l’Europe. C’est au cœur de cette guerre
terriblement meurtrière, au moment où la France est affaiblie par les décès successifs de Richelieu et
Louis XIII que les Espagnols, qui occupent la Belgique et les Pays-Bas, choisissent d’envahir Rocroy, passage
obligé pour s’emparer du Royaume. Mais sur leur chemin, se dresse un jeune et fougueux militaire, le duc
d’Enghien, futur Grand Condé.
Situé place du Luxembourg dans un ancien corps de garde du XVIIème siècle, le Musée de la Bataille de
Rocroy vous retrace les moments glorieux de cette bataille à l’aide d’un diaporama animé d’une vingtaine
de minutes. De nombreux dioramas totalisant près de quinze mille figurines abordent la guerre de Trente
Ans et un superbe plan en relief permet aux visiteurs de comprendre l’histoire des fortifications.

On 19th May 1643, in the middle of the devastating Thirty Years’ War, the
name of Rocroy entered the history books. It was then that History, with a
capital “H”, shattered the quiet anonymity of the village and, for decades,
France’s schoolchildren would study what historians consider to be one of
the ten greatest military victories in the country’s history.
The hostility between the kingdoms of France and Spain dated back
to 1519, when François I failed in his attempt to become the Emperor
of Germany and preference was given to Charles V. After Henri IV’s
assassination, the future King Louis XIII married Anne of Austria who was
the daughter of King Philip III of Spain. The Defenestration of Prague on
23rd May 1618 was the incident that started the Thirty Years’ War. Soon
the whole of Europe was involved and the war resulted in huge loss of
life. During this time, France was weakened by the successive deaths of
Cardinal Richelieu and Louis XIII. Meanwhile the Spaniards, who already
occupied Belgium and the Netherlands, decided to take Rocroy, an
essential move if they were to capture the kingdom as a whole. However,
standing in their way, was a daring young soldier, the Duke d’Enghien,
later to be known as the “Great Condé”.
Located on Place du Luxembourg in a 17th-century guardhouse, the
Museum of the Battle of Rocroy illustrates the glorious moments in the
battle using a 20-minute animated slide show. Numerous dioramas with a
total of almost fifteen thousand figurines depict the Thirty Years’ War and
a superb relief map explains the history of the fortifications.

Midden in de verwoestende Dertigjarige Oorlog, op 19 mei 1643, wordt
de naam Rocroy voorgoed verbonden met de geschiedenis van Frankrijk.
De Geschiedenis met een grote G haalt het dorp uit zijn anonimiteit,
waarna Franse scholieren decennialang bestuderen wat historici
beschouwen als één van de tien grootste militaire overwinningen in de
geschiedenis van ons land.
De vijandige gezindheid tussen de koninkrijken Frankrijk en Spanje gaat
terug tot 1519, toen Frans I de strijd om de titel van Keizer van Duitsland
verloor van Karel de Vijfde. Na de moord op Hendrik de Vierde huwt de
toekomstige koning Lodewijk XIII met Anna van Oostenrijk, dochter van
de Spaanse koning Filips III. De Praagse defenestratie, op 23 mei 1618,
is het startsein voor de Dertigjarige Oorlog, die heel Europa in vuur en
vlam zet. In het holst van deze bloedige oorlog, op het moment dat de
positie van Frankrijk verzwakt is door het achtereenvolgens overlijden van
Richelieu en Lodewijk XIII, besluiten de Spanjaarden, die reeds België en
Nederland bezetten, om Rocroy in te nemen. Ze moesten wel, want het
stadje vormde de onvermijdelijke toegangspoort tot het Koninkrijk. Op
hun weg vinden zij echter een jonge, onstuimige militair, de hertog van
Enghien, later bekend als de ‘Grand Condé’.
Op het Place du Luxembourg is in een voormalig wachthuis uit de 17e
eeuw het Museum van de Slag om Rocroy ondergebracht. Hier kunt u een
diashow van twintig minuten bekijken die een overzicht geeft van alle
glorierijke momenten van deze slag. Allerlei scènes uit de Dertigjarige
Oorlog zijn uitgebeeld aan de hand van historische maquettes met maar
liefst vijftienduizend figuurtjes, en een schitterende landkaart met reliëf
geeft inzicht in de geschiedenis van de verdedigingswerken.
