On December 7 the APEEE held its key annual event: the General Assembly of its members. Out of a total number of 430 Class Representatives
in the Association 245 (nearly 60%) participated either directly or by proxy.
For the first time the audience was able to follow the main content of the
evening on a slide presentation which proved very popular. The first part of
the evening gave an opportunity for the parents to listen to and ask questions of the visitors. Mr Ryan spoke of the debate around the future development of the European School System as well as the planned enrolment
policy for 2007. Mr Hilmersson discussed his “Mission Statement” for the
school and invited feedback from the parents in the near future.
The formal part of the evening covered a review of the achievements in the
past year from the various sectors of the APEEE – administrative, pedagogical and communications. The Assembly approved the accounts, the auditors report and the budget for the current year, and gave discharge to the
Board members.

Following a spirited discussion the Assembly also voted overwhelmingly to
support our APEEE helping to start-up the future APEEE of Brussels IV along with the other 2 Brussels APEEE’s. Their services – Canteen, Transport and Périscolaire – need to be up and running when the school opens in
Berkendael in September and will have to be organised long before the future parents can organise their own APEEE.

At the end of the General Assembly 4 new Board members were elected
(out of a 6 candidates) and I am happy to welcome Viviane Vanovermeire
(FR section), Sigrid Mol – de Jong (NL), Jean-Emmanuel Duliere (FR) and
Annette Schneegans (DE) to the APEEE Board. They join Dorte PardoLopez (recently elected by the DE section) to bring our total to 25.

In addition we have had a number of changes in the section representatives
for the 2 Educational Councils and on behalf of the Board I would like to
thank everyone for their involvement in these critical pedagogical activities.
Finally , with the agreement of the School Direction, we have taken an innovative step in a difficult but necessary area of life at school - namely the
Disciplinary Council. Parents and students caught up in this process have
always been allowed to ask the “APEEE” for help if they wished – but in this
context the APEEE is rather faceless! So we decided to make available one
experienced senior APEEE Board member to assist parents in such cases
and I am happy to inform you that Cynthia Simpson has accepted this role
and is available to assist you should the need arise.

The new enrolment policy, which has caused varying degrees of concern to parents, has already
been published by the new Central Enrolment
Authority appointed by the Board of Governors for
the Brussels schools and by the time you read
this the enrolment process for 2007 will be underway. The major difference with last year is that
all enrolments for Primary 4/5 and Secondary will
take place across the 3 Brussels schools for all
sections (historically 30% + of all requirements);
and while it will take a couple of months to understand the detailed ramifications of all the
new enrolment requests it is quite likely that,
despite the addition of Brussels IV, the overall
population at Ixelles will not shrink by much ;
but that Secondary will grow at the expense of
Nursery and Primary. And you can be sure that
all the APEEE’s will continue to defend the
concept of pedagogical continuity in all sections and levels in every forum we can.

One Semester at the European School Culham, England
Recently, I came back from the European School Culham in England, where I
had been staying since the beginning of
this school year. I have been on what
would usually be called an exchange,
only without an exchange partner, as I
am German and someone wanting to
learn the language would probably rather
go to Germany than to Brussels. I have
very much enjoyed my time there, but
sadly it wasn’t possible for me to stay for
the whole year, as there would have
been difficulties concerning my place at
this school, coming back.
Culham is a very nice school, even
though much smaller than Ixelles, or the
other schools in Brussels, and I can recommend going there to anyone who
wants to learn English a little better.
Following my opinion, the best year to go
there is probably secondary year 4, as
there are not yet any exams. Fifth year is
fine as well, but anything from then is
probably to close to the baccalaureate.
As small as Culham is, the school is very
used to pupils coming from other European Schools, which is why the exchanges are remarkably well organised
on it’s parts. There is Carol Ghadimi who
arranges the finding of host families and
due to Culham’s size there is not much
organisation needed anyway, as there
are no such things as ID, bus, or canteen
cards.
Since all European Schools have the same curriculum, there is not much to be missed during the exchange. This is an advantage, but it would be even
better, if it was possible to stay a whole year, as the
order, in which the teachers choose to teach the different topics, is not necessarily the same.
Overall, I have extremely enjoyed my time in England
and I really think, that more people should have the
heart to go one an exchange, as it is decidedly a
great experience.

„Diverse but United for the Holiday season“
At the end of the
last school year,
the three APEEE
Presidents, Alain

thought of organising a joint
event before the
holiday season
starts, promoting
the talents of all
three schools
and Périscolaires.
During the night of November 17, the Ixelles Secondary Art Teachers, led by Mrs Torreggiani and a team of enthusiastic parents hung and displayed the “Master Pieces” of our
students; from wild animals hanging from the Piazza ceiling to auto- portraits of Art Students – we “redecorated” the Berlaymont Piazza. This very colourful and outstanding exhith
th
bition lasted until December 14 . The highlight of the event was on December 8 - the
Christmas Market representing all the EU member states’ holiday foods and our talented
children and teenagers had the opportunity to sing, dance or play an instrument.
Mrs Marloes Zois organised a three auditions bringing together children from the primary
and secondary. Together with the students, they put together a classical program from
Bach to their own creations including Christmas Carols – we must thank the following students for their performance: Samira Le Grand, Julien Bruyninckx, Louise Bertrand, Danae
Daniilidis, Julia van Litsenburg, Lucia Kubincova, Kate Lowe, Rhoxane Zois, Ana Maria
Bruggink, Frederik Bruggink, Frederik Bruggink and Victoria O´Brien. Mr Brochhagen
opened the evening with his orchestra, keeping us entertained for one hour. Two of our
secondary groups “The Social Stereos” and “The Kegs” added a Rock ‘n Roll touch to the
evening. Our Périscolaire animated most of the evening with Jembee and folk dances, Capoeira etc. – a big thanks to the teachers and Jacky Materna for participating with such an
extreme enthusiasm to this event.
While our students were performing, some of us had the opportunity of tasting national holiday food baked by our parents. The benefit of the food sale went to “Farra” a Belgian organisation for adult mental handicapped. We bought them a swing set for their garden. The
organisation was choosen by the Ixelles APEEE board. This event was such a success due
to hard work and a great team effort, this shows that “Together we can, although we are
diverse”. The next event will be held in February 2008 for the Carnival. Looking forward to
seeing and working with all of you in the next years!

„Unis dans la Diversité pour de Joyeuses Fêtes“
Pendant la soirée du 17 novembre, les professeurs d'Art du secondaire d'Ixelles, sous la
tutelle de Mme Torreggiani et d'un groupe de parents enthousiastes, ont accroché et mis en
valeur les œuvres d'art des élèves. La "Piazza Berlaymont" a été entièrement redécorée :
depuis des animaux sauvages accrochés au plafond, jusqu'à des autoportraits réalisés par
les étudiants en Art – cette magnifique exposition très colorée a égayé le hall du Berlaymont
jusqu'au 14 décembre. Le clou de l'événement a été la soirée du 8 décembre : un Marché de
Noël proposait aux visiteurs de la nourriture de tous les coins de l'Union et les élèves ont
proposé un spectacle où ils ont démontré leurs grands talents de danseurs, chanteurs et
musiciens.

Mme Marloes Zois avait auparavant organisé trois auditions, au niveau des sections primaires et secondaires. En collaboration avec les étudiants, ils ont mis au point un programme
classique, incluant des morceaux de Bach mais aussi leurs propres créations, dont des
chants de Noël. Nous félicitons particulièrement les élèves suivants pour leurs performances:
Samira Le Grand, Julien Bruyninckx, Louise Bertrand, Danae Daniilidis, Julia van Litsenburg,
Lucia Kubincova, Kate Lowe, Rhoxane Zois, Ana Maria Bruggink, Frederik Bruggink, Frederik Bruggink and Victoria o´Brien. M. Brochhagen a ouvert la soirée avec son orchestre, qui
a joué pendant une heure. Une touche rock n'roll a été apportée par deux groupes du secondaire, plus tard dans la soirée : les “Social Stereos” et les “Kegs”. Le Périscolaire a animé la
majeure partie de la soirée avec des danses folkloriques et des présentations de Jembee, de
capoeira etc.– un grand merci aux professeurs et à Jacky Materna pour leur participation
enthousiaste à cet événement.
Pendant que les élèves se produisaient, les visiteurs ont également pu goûter de la nourriture de saison et des spécialités régionales préparées par les parents. Les bénéfices de la
vente ont été à l'organisation belge “Farra”, qui s'occupe d'adultes atteints d'un handicap
mental. Nous leur avons acheté un ensemble "balançoire" pour leur jardin. L'organisation a
été choisie par le bureau de l'APEEE d'Ixelles. Cet événement a été un magnifique succès
grâce à un énorme travail d'équipe. Il prouve bien que "on peut construire ensemble, malgré
nos diversités". Le prochain événement de ce genre est prévu pour février 2008 (Carnaval).
En espérant vous revoir nombreux et pouvoir compter sur votre assistance les prochaines
années !

Cantine: Notre Chef gagne un premier prix
Nous savions déjà que notre Chef n'était pas n'importe qui: entre autres, parmi
une longue carrière au service des papilles gustatives, notamment au service de
celles de nos enfants, (qui n'ont pas manqué de constater une amélioration de
leur quotidien depuis son arrivée), on peut souligner qu'il a été associé à l'ancien
"Pistou" à La Hulpe, et qu'il a eu son propre restaurant, "Le Dill" à Lodelinsart.
Voici qu'il ajoute un nouveau prix à son palmarès ! Les critères du concours
étaient 1° un "food cost" maximum imposé de 5 euros et 2° une série de
marchandises à utiliser (fond de gibier, bouillon de champignons des bois et
crème solo délifine) pour réaliser un potage et une grosse pièce. La première
étape consistait en l'envoi de proposition de recette – là, notre Chef fait partie
des cinq finalistes. Ensuite, il a fallu réaliser la recette dans les locaux du
magazine "A Point". Voici donc le menu dont la réalisation a valu la palme à
Didier Delhoux…
Petit velouté aux champignons, craquant de lard et fleurs comestibles
Volaille rôtie à basse température accompagné d’une purée parfumée aux
champignons des bois,
chicon braisé au miel de lavande,
courte sauce à la Trammelantje et sa petite crème battue à l'huile de truffe
Pour les curieux qui se demandent ce qu'est la Trammelantje, sachez que c'est
une nouvelle bière artisanale, produite au Coq depuis juillet dernier – c'est elle
qui a inspiré la recette à Didier Delhoux, qui voulait utiliser des produits "bien de
chez nous" ! Félicitations Didier !!!

They adopted the BIGGEST apple tree
Class p3eb of Mr. Murphy walked the grounds of
the school to select the tree to adopt. They chose
the BIGGEST apple tree. A parent of the Anonymous Planters explained why these flowers and
fruit trees were planted; they are intended to teach
us about the nature and the seasons. Fruit trees
also provide food for animals that live around our
school. The flowers and fruits will become part of
the rhythm of the school year, but they need a little
bit of care, especially protection against people
breaking of branches. Also someone has to determine when the fruit is ready to be picked. The
class that adopts a tree will hang a sign on it, when
the fruit can be picked. Over the years it will see its
tree develop and grow. Maybe, in thirty years time,
you come back for a reunion, and will find your tree
is still there…

Living Calendar
Returning to school in September, you find flowering dahlias and grapes on
the vines. The grapes will soon be edible and, while small, are delicious. The
apples and pears are not yet ripe. That starts late September, early October.
In October the sweet chestnuts will be falling, as well as the walnuts and hazelnuts. The grey gray winter lasts from late November until February, when
the first snowdrops become visible, soon followed by the crocus and narcissus, the camellia. In the hall of the canteen the lemon bush will be put in the
light and warmth after its winter rest – after the carnival holiday it will be
spreading an intense sweet smell. After that the tulips, the blossoms of the
cherries, the apples, the pears, the incredibly fast growth of the vines. Just
before the end of the school year the cherries will be ripe.
Ownership? No one... or all!
The Fruits we have
Who owns these trees - nobody, or everybody?
Plants and trees are vulnerable to vandalism and
stupidity. Breaking of a twig while playing is not innocent. It deforms a tree and puts it at risk for infections. Trees also teach us another key lesson in life:
it is better to take the risk that someone else enjoys
an apple than to pick it unripe. You may be tempted
to pick it early, to make sure YOU have it. But an
unripe apple cannot be eaten and ends in the garbage. You have to leave it until its ripe, maybe this
year you will have an apple, or share it with a friend;
maybe you only have a cherry, or a walnut. Last
year a group of five or six, maybe 11-year-old pupils,
broke off forty to fifty unripe apples, to throw them.
Throwing rock hard unripe apples is dangerous and
wasteful. Most upsetting was that none of the pupils
walking past, many bigger and older did anything to
stop them.
There are traditional fruit varieties planted
like, for the apples, ‘Notaris appel’, ‘Transparante Jaune, Princess Noble’, Schone van
Boskoop, Sterappel and Bramley Seedling.
All have different tastes and are ripe at different times. The Bramley is the ideal apple
for apple pie, the Princess Noble to eat as it
is.
Pears are also indigenous fruits in Belgium.
We have a ‘Conference’, the other a ‘Jut’, a
traditional high flavour pear!
Brussels has a long tradition with cherries
(Kriek beer of Schaarbeek!) and we have
several, which should give masses of fruit in
a few years, sadly they are badly vandalized, while they are fragile.

The nuts will take some time to ‘produce’. The
hazelnut bushes gave four or five hazelnuts last
year, ‘just like the nutella label’. In the lower primary playground we have a big walnut tree.
Vines are nice for three reasons. The green haze on the bare vines in spring is one of the first
signs that the winter is over. When we come
back from the summer holiday there will be lots
of grape bunches hanging in the vines, edible
mid September, better still in late September. In
the autumn the vine leaves develop beautiful
colors and patterns. There are four vines on the
fence of the bus parking and three in bins in the
playground of Maternelle.

Mulberry is a fruit that used to grow in the gardens of
castles and monasteries. It was planted in 2006 and
will take eight to ten years (!) to bear fruit. It is well
worth the wait, the fruits are big, juicy and aromatic.
There is one drawback - the stains of the juice are more permanent than ink stains.
Last year we had an orange and a lemon bush, but
they disappeared. A larger lemon bush, put in the canteen hallway, replaced them. It will flower in a few
weeks time, and smell divine. Can all readers please
help explain to the other kids that break twigs and lemons off that that is a pity? It is so nice to see these
fruits grow and turn yellow as they ripen.

Pot de la section NL
Mardi 12 septembre dernier un apéritif a été organisé par la section
néerlandophone pour toutes les
parties concernées. Les professeurs l’ayant fait à deux reprises
c’était le tour des parents d’ organième
ser ce pot. Les élèves de 7
étaient également invités. Le but
était de démarrer l’année scolaire
d’une manière agréable, et ce faisant de permettre aux nouveaux
parents de rencontrer les autres.
Borrel Nederlandstalige sectie
Op dinsdag 12 september is een borrel gehouden voor alle
Nederlandstalige betrokkenen bij de Nederlandstalige sectie. Nadat leerkrachten twee maal eenzelfde initiatief hadden genomen was het nu de beurt aan de ouders de borrel
te organiseren en aan te bieden aan de leerkrachten van de
de
sectie. De leerlingen uit de 7 klas waren ook uigenodigd.
De bedoeling was om het nieuw schooljaar op een gezellige
manier met elkaar te beginnen, en zodoende de nieuwe ouders de gelegenheid te bieden kennis te maken met de rest
van de ouders.
Monsieur Boisdainghien en Monsieur Delhoux zorgden ervoor dat we de beschikking kregen over de cantine des professeurs, waar de door een team van enthousiaste ouders
ingekochte hapjes en drankjes feestelijk (en koel) konden

e
worden opgesteld. Enkele 6 en 7 klassers hebben hierbij
de helpende hand toegestoken.

Bij de ingang werden alle bezoekers vanaf 18.00 uur met
een glas schuimwijn welkom geheten door enkele meisjes
de
uit de 7 klas. Het was een hele warme dag: gelukkig stonden de deuren naar buiten wijd open en konden een heleboel mensen op het terrasje achter de cantine een beetje
lucht happen.
Onze directeur Monsieur Hilmersson verbaasde ons alweer
door zijn speech in keurig Nederlands gehouden, gevolgd
door de heer Meijers (waarnemend voorzitter NL Platform)
en door Marloes Zois, die aankondigde dat de resultaten
van het uitstroomonderzoek (wat gebeurt er met leerlingen
die onze school verlaten na het examen) beschikbaar waren. Rond 20.00 uur gingen de laatste mensen weg : tijd om
op te ruimen. Iedereen kon tevreden terug kijken op een
geslaagde moment, zeker voor herhaling vatbaar !

Dès 18h les invités se voyaient offrir en arrivant un verre de vin
mousseux par quelques jeunes filème
les de 7 . C’était une journée très
chaude : heureusement les portes
étaient grandes ouvertes et beaucoup de monde s’est retrouvé dehors sur la terrasse pour prendre un
peu le frais.
Notre directeur M. Hilmersson nous
a fait la surprise de s’adresser à
tous en un néerlandais sans faute,
suivi de M. Meijers (président remplaçant de la Plateforme néerlandophone) et de Marloes Zois (mère
ème
d’élève de 7 ) qui annonça que
les résultats de l’enquête sur les
débouchés après l’école (que deviennent les élèves après avoir quitté l’école) étaient disponibles.
Vers 20h les derniers invités s’en
allèrent : il était temps de ranger et
de remettre en ordre la cantine.
Chacun s’en fut en savourant ce
moment très réussi, qui sera certainement répété à l’avenir.

La Rentrée: Nur schnell weg!
Geschubse, Krach, riesige Schüler mit langen Haaren und Bärten, Schüler, die ganz
anders aussehen als meine Klassenkameraden und ich, und das sind erst die
Jungs! Schön ist es nicht, noch mal von vorne anzufangen, wieder die Kleinsten zu
sein, in einer großen Schule mit so vielen älteren Leuten. Zum Glück wird man vom
Klassenlehrer in die Klasse gebracht, aber irgendwie ist das auch seltsam, ungewiss. Und dann geht auch an diesem scheinbar so sicheren Ort das Chaos los:
“Also, hier sind 5000 Briefe für eure Eltern, die ihr mit nach Hause nehmen sollt und
nicht verlieren dürft!” (Das kann ja heiter werden!)
“ Lest euch die Regeln gut durch, an die müsst ihr euch halten! (Niemals!)
“Hier ist euer Stundenplan, ihr dürft auf keinen Fall zu spät zur Stunde kommen!”
(Als ob das je passieren würde!)
Bis dahin hat man die Regeln ungefähr verstanden, weiß, dass es schwer wird.
Dann klingelt es und man muss in die nächste Stunde… “Aua!” - “Pass auf, wo du
hinlatschst, Winzling!” - “Ich hab mich verlaufen!” Ja, das Treppenhaus. Nicht schön,
nicht freundlich und auf jeden Fall nicht sicher! Man denkt, dass man, nachdem man
das alles überlebt hat, zumindest ein bisschen Verständnis von den Lehrern erwarten kann, aber nein, da tönt es schon von weitem: “Es klingelt gleich, schnell !rein
und setz dich hin!” - “Warum bist du zu spät!? Es hat schon vor einer Sekunde geklingelt!”… Ich will nach Hause!!! Aber nur die Ruhe bewahren – nach einer Woche
ist das Chaos Alltag!

Jedes Jahr kommt er
wieder, der Tag, an dem
kleine Kinder plötzlich
“groß” werden, an dem
Eltern schniefen und an
dem fotografiert wird wie
nie zuvor. Es ist der erste
Schultag nach den
Sommerferien. ”Machen
wir noch ein Foto, bevor
mein Schatz losgeht.”
Und noch mal wird geblitzt, noch ein Foto von
Kind mit Schultüte, ohne
Zähne und breit grinsend.
Nun, das ist ja alles gut
und schön für die kleinen
Kinder, aber was ist mit
den älteren Kindern, die
in der Secondaire anfangen?

Schulpatenschaften
„Endlich ist es soweit – ich komme in die Sekundär“ –
das ist das Positive dieses Schulwechsels. Aber: Wie
komme ich dort zurecht? Das ist die große Angst, die
fast jeder 5. Primär-Schüler kennt.
Mein Schulpate hatte mir zwar nicht geholfen bzw. ich hatte sie gar nicht gebraucht. Natürlich hatte es mir Sicherheit gegeben, weil ich wusste das es
immer jemanden gibt der mir im Notfall
helfen konnte. Aber im großen und ganzen, nein ich hab sie nicht gebraucht.
Aber für die nächste 1DE würde ich wieder Klassenpaten nehmen, das gibt den
anderen bestimmt auch Sicherheit.
Um euch diese Angst zu nehmen, haben wir unsere Patenschaften ins Leben gerufen. Wir trafen uns vor und
nach dem gefürchteten Wechsel (also vor und direkt
nach den Sommerferien). Zuerst in der Primär, um uns
kennen zu lernen und die Patenschaften zu schließen.
Am zweiten Schultag marschierten wir gemeinsam, d.h.
Pate und Patenkind, die Stundenpläne ab. Außerdem
zeigten wir ihnen andere wichtige Orte der Sekundär, wie
die „Etude“, die Cafeteria und so weiter. Zurück im
Klassenzimmer stellten uns die Erstklässler Fragen, die
sie schon vorher vorbereitet hatten.
Auch wenn diese aktive Patenschaft nur kurze Zeit dauerte, wussten sich die neuen Sekundärschüler gut zu helfen. Es würde uns freuen, wenn andere Sektionen diese
Idee übernehmen würden, da es diese Angst vor dem
Wechsel wahrscheinlich nicht nur bei deutschsprachigen
Kindern gibt.

Anfangs war alles fremd. Man wusste nicht so
richtig, ob man aufgeregt sein sollte, die Paten
kennen zu lernen, oder ob man einfach nur gelassen in die Secondaire kommen sollte. Ich entschied mich für das 'aufgeregt sein'. Und es
lohnte sich. Ich hätte auch mal mit meiner
Schwester gehen können, aber ich bin froh, es
nicht getan zu haben. So konnten die Paten einem nämlich alles genau zeigen, was man sehen
wollte. Es war schön, dass ich meine Patin schon
von früher kannte. Und ich könnte die Idee mit
den Patenschaften auf jeden Fall weiterempfehlen!

Students of 5 L II and 5 LIII visit their partner school
in Cochem / Germany
It has been a tradition for several years that students of German as a foreign language visit our
partner school in Germany , the Martin von Cochem- Gymnasium in the beautiful little town of Coth
st
chem, situated romantically in the valley of the river Mosel. From September 27 to October 1
nine adventurous students of 5 LII and 5 L III experienced three unforgettable days there and made
new friends, who will pay their return visit in May next year.
The visit this year included one morning accompanying the exchange partners to school, a very
enjoyable but for some of us very wet canoeing trip on the river, a visit to Germany’s former capital, Bonn, with an interesting guided tour round the fantastic “Haus der Geschichte” (“House of
history”) and activities with the hosting families and partners. This is the students of ee3 said
about the trip afterwards:
“It was really good. It was nice to see
what other schools are like. Ich habe
nur Deutsch mit der Familie gesprochen. Es war ein bisschen kurz.”
