It is a Public Interest Group associated with INRA, the French Ministry of Agriculture and GNIS. The main official missions of GEVES are to conduct studies for: • • • the registration of all new vegetal varieties in the official catalogue the legal protection of plant breeders' rights the certification of seeds before their marketing, for the species submitted to statutory certification. To accomplish its missions, GEVES conducts activities such as: • Description of varieties and evaluation of genetic progress • Assessment of seed quality • Methodological research • Management of genetic ressources • Trainings • International cooperation • Leading of a national network of laboratories for seed analysis. • Organisation of inter-laboratory tests GEVES offers a vast range of services within its fields of competences. Objectives of applied research of varieties and seeds • To develop and promote relevant methods of seed analysis and to study varieties adapted to the needs of the industry and to the regulations • To identify needs using pertinent research tools from academic research • To offer high level technical expertise in the variety and seed study field • To provide knowledge and methods to other players in the sector • To standardize and harmonize new methods on a national and international basis -9- Visit of the laboratory LSV-ANSES (National Laboratory of Plant health) 1 st July 2015 The ANSES Plant Health Laboratory (LSV), located in Angers at the heart of a “competitiveness cluster with global reach in plant sciences", today inaugurated its new building. This has been made possible thanks to funding from France's Ministry of Agriculture, the EU's Regional Development Fund (managed by the Prefecture of the Pays de la Loire Regional Council), the Maine et Loire Departmental Council and the Greater Angers Loire Métropole Area, and will provide the working conditions needed to enable this National Reference Laboratory to maintain the scope and reliability of its work. It offers staff optimum working conditions while blending perfectly into the local environment. The new scientific area will be able to take in young researchers for training and welcome foreign delegations or staff from other national or European laboratories. Just like humans and animals, plants can also be the victims of a range of pathogens (viruses, bacteria, parasitic worms, fungi), as well as of insect pests and invasive plants, with serious consequences both on the economics of crop production and on preservation of biodiversity. As the National Reference Laboratory for Plant Health, the LSV develops analytical and screening methods and also undertakes research into regulated or emerging harmful organisms, to contribute to risk management in plant health. It provides technical and scientific support to government departments and participates in international scientific partnerships related to its missions. It coordinates a network of laboratories accredited to carry out official analyses concerning regulated diseases and organizes inter-laboratory proficiency tests to guarantee the network's reliability. The laboratory covers all disciplines relative to biological risks to plant health: virology, bacteriology, mycology, GMOs, nematology, entomology and invasive plants, as well as tropical pests and pathogens. It coordinates expert appraisals and risk assessment within its field of competence. It has a workforce of 80 people, spread over six separate sites. The headquarters of the LSV are in Angers, at the heart of a “competitiveness cluster with global reach in plant sciences". This site, in close proximity to INRA, GEVES (1), INH (2), the Technopole House and the future Institut du Végétal, enables the laboratory to forge partnerships with both regional and national research institutes (INRA, universities, the doctoral school, GEVES-SNES, FREDON (3), professional organisations, etc.). As a partner of the Végépolys competitiveness cluster, the laboratory is on the technical committee that is developing the “Plant Campus”, a project to bring all the existing research teams together to form a joint research unit under the Institut Fédératif de Recherche's QUASAV unit (4), in order to pool resources, develop partnerships and increase efficiency. -10- Visit of the CIRM-CFBP (French Collection for Plant-associated Bacteria) 1 st July 2015 The CIRM-CFBP, is a Biological Resource Center certified ISO9001, holds about 7000 accessions and its missions are: • to preserve this biodiversity and associated data • to distribute the resources to the international scientific community for research, development and teaching • to valorise the resources Visit of the Museum of Natural History in Paris 3 rd July 2015 https://www.mnhn.fr/fr Two visits will be proposed: The alpine garden The tropical greenhouse -11- Visit of the FNAMS National Federation of multiplication farmers 8th July 2015 The FNAMS (National Federation of Farmers seed growers) is a professional organization specializing in the agricultural seed multiplication. It represents 19,000 farmers Visit of the ITEIPMAI Institute for Medicinal and Aromatic plants 8th July 2015 The Plant Science Summer School is financially supported by the "RFI Végétal programme" (Research - Education Innovation programme in Pays de la Loire), which is funded by the Région des Pays de la Loire, Angers Loire Métropole and the European Regional Development Fund”. -12- LIST OF SPEAKERS BOUET Serge, FNAMS(FR) BOTTON Alexander, University of Padua (IT) BRISSET Marie Noëlle, INRA, Angers (FR) BUCHER Etienne, University of Angers (FR) CELTON Marc, INRA, Angers (FR) DEBENER Thomas, University of Hannover (DE) DEGRAVE Alexandre, AgroCampus Ouest, Angers (FR) DERBRE Séverine, Université d’Angers (FR) FOUCHER Fabrice, INRA, Angers (FR) GALLARDO Karine, INRA Dijon (FR) GOMBERT Julie, Brain sur L’Authion (FR) GRIMAULT Valérie, Geves, Angers (FR) HELLOU Guenaëlle, ESA, Angers (FR) HIBRAND-SAINT OYANT Laurence, INRA, Angers (FR) – Mobile Phone (33)6 32 38 25 27 JAMAR Daniel, Walloon Agricultural Research Centre Gembloux (BE) LAURENS François, INRA Angers (FR) LE SAUX Marion, INRA, Angers (FR) LOUBERT Thérèse, Rose Garden, Les Rosiers sur Loire (FR) MEHINAGIC Emira, ESA, Angers (FR) MERCIER Raphael, INRA -Versailles (FR) MONTRICHARD Françoise, Université d’Angers (FR) ORSEL Mathilde, INRA, Angers (FR) PETRONELLI Pierre, Vegepolys (FR) PIVA Guillaume, ESA, Angers (FR) POLIAKOFF Françoise, ANSES, Angers (FR) RENOU Jean Pierre, INRA, Angers (FR) RICHOMME Pascal, Université d’Angers (FR) SIMONEAU Philippe, Université d’Angers (FR) SYMONEAUX Ronan, ESA, Angers (FR) TOTH Ian, James Hutton Institute (UK) WIDENT Mathieu, ITEIPMAI Chemillé (FR) WILLIAMS Gareth, Bristol University (UK) WOLFENDER Jean Luc, University of Geneva (CH) -13- LIST OF PARTICIPANTS BRICHE Thomas Bruz (FR) PhD Sciences BRUNA Caroline Johannesburg (DE) Graduate M.Sc.Sciences FORTE Flavia Pilar Rome (IT) Master’s Degree Sciences GRATL Verena – Vienna (AT) 6year Sciences MASENYA Kedibone Pretoria (ZA) PhD Sciences PHALAFALA Lekgolwa Pretoria (ZA) 2year Sciences CHAILLOU-DELECOURT Félix Angers (FR) 3year Sciences KHELOUL Lynda – Tizi Ouzou (DZ) PhD Sciences MATSAUNYANE Lerato Johannesburg (ZA) PhD Sciences MERLET Léa Angers (FR) 4year Sciences RAUWANE Molemi Potchefstroom (ZA) Master Degree Sciences ZOCCA Pietro Padova (IT) Postdoc Sciences -14- DE MEZQUITA Dereck Angers (FR) 1st year Sciences LAKSHMI Vijaya Patna (IN) PhD Sciences NOKOBO Zanele Pretoria (ZA) PhD Sciences Profile of the candidates -15- Plant Science Summer School 2015 Workshop Groups GROUP A BRICHE Thomas BRUNA Caroline CHAILLOU-DELECOURT Félix FORTE Flavia Pilar LAKHSMI Vijaya NOKOBO Zanele RAUWANE Molemi GROUP B DE MEZQUITA Dereck GRATL Verena KHELOUL Lynda MASENYA Kedibone MATSAUNYANE Lerato MERLET Léa PHALAFALA Lekgolwa ZOCCA Pietro -16- HELP DURING YOUR STAY We will be glad to welcome you in Angers! Pubs, bars and nightclubs – plenty to keep you going until dawn! • Boulevard Foch The main street of the city center, flanked by restaurants, brasseries and shops. Parks and gardens • Le Jardin des Plantes These gardens, laden with history, were the city’s first botanical gardens. Today the park’s 4 hectares are laid out in an English-style garden dating from 1904-1905. Its footpath, waterfalls and statues give it a serene and romantic atmosphere, a perfect antidote to the bustle of the city. Things to see: a remarkable collection of ancient trees, the aviary and the small animal enclosure. • Le Jardin du Mail These gardens came into being around the 17th century, born of the « Jeu du Mail », a now obsolete French lawn game. The fountain, by Barbezat, and the large pond (1855) make up the central axis where the geometrically-arranged paths converge. The paths flaked by greenery, the flower beds and the exceptional floral displays in summer are worth a visit. • Le Parc de l’Arboretum Covering an area of nearly 7 hectares, the Parc de L’Arboretum consists of four public gardens dedicated to horticulture and the spontaneous flora indigenous to the Angers area. Combining the art of gardening with fine arts, the various landscapes incorporate a collection of bronze sculptures by the artist Francois Cacheux. • Le Parc de Balzac A perfect place to stroll along the banks of the Maine near the city center, the designers of this park were inspired by the marshes of the Poitou region to compose a partial network of canals that have created a nature reserve of great ecological diversity. -21- DAYLIFE / NIGHTLIFE Culture Main Museums Château d'Angers Musée Jean Lurçat Musée des BeauxArts Galerie David d'Angers Theatres Théâtre Le Quai Théâtre du Champs de Bataille Angers Nantes Opéra Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire (ONPL) Live Music Amphitea Le Chabada Cinemas Multiplex Gaumont Les 400 Coups Lac de Maine theme park Do you want to relax, to roam, to sail, to swim, to get a good look at fauna and flora, to exercise, to rest, to meet people?
