Louisiana was named in honor of the French king
Louis XIV (1638–1715). Louisiana was once a French
colony and extended up the entire Mississippi basin. The U.S.
purchased it from France in 1803. Today, French is still spoken
in the state of Louisiana by some people in the “Cajun” areas.
