The effect of learning styles and motivation on students` Vocabulary
Abstract There are a number of factors within learners themselves that influence their ability to learn.Best known of these are: motivation, age, gender, learning styles and strategies, and memory. From a methodological standpoint, the present research is limited to two independent variables: field dependent and field independent learning style and motivation. It reports on their effect on the acquisition of second language vocabulary for writing purposes as a dependent variable of the research. The underlying hypothesis is that if teachers focus on the learners’learning styles and attempt to raise their motivation, this may enhance their vocabulary acquisition for writing purposes. The educational setting in which this study takes place is the Department of Letters and English Language, Faculty of Letters and Languages, Constantine1University.To achieve the aim of the undertaken research, answer the research questions, and attempt to confirm the validity of the hypothesis, we use three research tools, namely the questionnaire, the interview, and the test.Agroup of 52 learners taken randomly from a total population of 520 Second Year Students has been used as a sample in the study of teachersThe questionnaire is administered to both a sample of teachers and a sample of students. The teachers’ questionnaire seeks to investigate their views and impressions about students’ learning styles, motivation, and their teaching styles with a focus on teaching vocabulary as a crucial aspect in second language proficiency. The learners’ questionnaire aims to collect data about students’ opinion about studies, teachers’ styles, motivation and vocabulary acquisition. These questionnaires help in designing the test that take place before and after the learners are taught some experimental lessons and practice some activities. The interview is handed after the pre-test to see how learners deal with unknown words while reading a text and to help us individualize them for the post test. The results of this investigation confirm the hypothesis and show that the learnerssubject of the study are able to learn almost all the new words introduced in the lessons when teachers focus on their learning styles and raise their awareness about how to use them in order to enhance their motivation while accomplishing the tasks. On the basis of the results obtained, some pedagogical implications are proposed to direct learners towards the effective way to learn vocabulary and to help instructors in their task of teaching through creating a motivating environment and matching their teaching methods with their learners’ styles.
