Students at Nuvviti School in Ivujivik had the once in a
lifetime opportunity last December to talk to an astronaut live
on board the International Space Station (ISS).
The Contact was made when the International Space
Station passed over Ivujivik. The ISS travels 355 km above the earth
at a speed of 28,000 km/hour (25 times faster than the speed of
sound), and orbits the earth 16 times per day or every 90 minutes.
This is why students had only a 20- to 30-minute window to talk
to American astronaut Daniel C. Burbank.

Le contact a eu lieu au moment où la station spatiale est passée
au-dessus d’Ivujivik. La SPI qui se déplace à 355 km au-dessus de la
terre à une vitesse de 28 000 km à l’heure (25 fois plus vite que la
vitesse du son) gravite autour de la terre 16 fois par jour ou toutes

description of their community. (Because a lot of space research is
conducted on Devon Island in the Canadian Arctic, many astronauts
are already familiar with the North.)
Before the contact, videos were shown of life on board the
ISS. Robotic demonstrations enabled students to try to land the
shuttle on the space station, while the audience watched all of
this on a large screen.
After the contact, Gilles Boutin, the Aurora Borealis expert held workshops with the students, and took senior
students out on the land at night to study the stars, Aurora
and planets. He was assisted by Ivujvik teacher, Sylvain Serre.

d’essayer de faire poser une navette spatiale sur la station spatiale,
pendant qu’un auditoire regardait tout cela sur un écran géant.
Après le contact, Gilles Boutin, expert en aurores boréales, a tenu des
ateliers avec des élèves et a amené des élèves plus âgés sur le terrain,
le soir, pour observer les étoiles, les aurores boréales et les planètes. Il
était assisté dans ces tâches par Sylvain Serre, un enseignant d’Ivujvik.
Des membres de la communauté, y compris le maire et les membres
du conseil municipal, de même que le président de Makivik, Pita

people at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas that space
shuttle astronauts are able to speak to students from earth’s orbit,
and that countries around the world are able to listen in via webbased technology.
In Nunavik, the program is sponsored by the Makivik Corporation,
First Air and Air Inuit who cover the costs for travel, accommodation, and equipment updates (equipment must keep current with
NASA). This enables the ARISS team, who volunteer their time, to
travel to our schools and help our students believe that anything
is possible, and to stay motivated to learn.
Energizing our students’ interest in science, technology, and
learning may encourage a youngster from somewhere in Nunavik
to shoot for the stars!
One thing is certain, the Space Contact with Nuvviti School
was out of this world!

‘BluePrintForLife’ HipHop programs sponsored through ‘New
Paths for Education’ were held in Kangirsuk, Aupaluk, Inukjuak and
Ivujivik schools. Other major sponsors include Air Inuit and First Air.
Tarsakallak School hosted the ‘Social Work through HipHop’
Project, while Sautjuit, Nuvviti and Innalik Schools hosted the new
‘Respect through HipHop’ Program. This new program, adapted in
content and language for an audience aged 10-13, focuses on a
strong healing and learning experience for younger youth that is
also fun. This is an important age as these youth are easily swayed
towards bullying and angry outbursts. The recurring theme in this
weeklong workshop is ‘Respect’ - Respect for oneself, for one’s family,
for one’s friends, for one’s community. Throughout the discussions
and workshops, youth learned direct skills to manage their emotions
and learn about different kinds of respect through teamwork with
others. As in all the workshops, the ‘BluePrintForLife’ Crew worked
with the school and community to create an intense, structured
and safe learning environment, which promotes transformation
in even the shyest of kids and starts them on a path of believing
in themselves.
Workshops throughout the week involved a combination of song,
dance and cultural activities, as well as two daily discussions around
the issues in students’ lives. The program also includes Mentoring
Workshops from 3-5 PM for older youth who have participated in a
previous HipHop workshop, and focuses on leadership training and
dance choreography. These “leaders” joined the ‘BluePrintForLife’
Crew from 9 to 3 every day to teach dance steps and choreography.
They also used their leadership skills to support and guide behaviour
of the younger students during daily discussions.

et la communauté afin de créer un environnement d’apprentissage
intense, structuré et sécuritaire qui vise à transformer même les
enfants les plus gênés, leur permettant de croire en soi.
Les ateliers tout au long de la semaine portaient sur les activités

deux discussions quotidiennes sur les enjeux importants dans leur
vie. Le programme comprenait également des ateliers de mentorat

The Final Show
Spectacle de clôture
As in all our one-week workshops, the schools hosted a final
showcase for the community on Friday evening, where everyone
was invited to celebrate and applaud the achievements of the
young participants. The students presented the results of their hard
work, performing beat-boxing, dance choreographies and throat
singing learned throughout the week. Evie Mark also introduced a
variety of Inuit song and dance games, and the students presented
a variety of song and dance routines combining traditional and
HipHop influences. In Aupaluk, the school presented the mural
created for their event. In Inukjuak, older youth from Nunavimmi
Pigiursivik participated throughout the week and presented their
dance choreography as part of the evening’s event.
All events were well attended; the youth were happy, confident
and left the evening with a sense of accomplishment, supported
by the applause and cheers of their families, teachers and friends.
The intensive week of activities brought out the capability of our
youth – their willingness to work hard, their character in supporting
each other, and their right to speak out and seek the understanding of others. In other words, learning ‘Respect, through HipHop’.
Comme dans tous nos ateliers d’une semaine, les écoles offrent
un spectacle de clôture à la communauté le vendredi soir. Tout le
monde est invité à célébrer et à applaudir les réalisations des jeunes participants. Les élèves ont présenté les résultats de leur dur
labeur, offrant des spectacles de boxe rythmée, de chorégraphies
de danse et de chants de gorge appris pendant la semaine. Evie
Mark a présenté également diverses chansons et danses inuites,
et les élèves, ont offert diverses routines de chansons et de danses
combinant les influences traditionnelles et HipHop. À Aupaluk, l’école
a dévoilé la murale créée pour souligner l’événement HipHop. À
Inukjuak, des jeunes plus âgés de l’école Nunavimmi Pigiursivik qui
ont participé aux activités tout au long de la semaine ont exécuté
leur chorégraphie de danse dans le cadre de la soirée de clôture.
Tous les événements ont été très courus; les jeunes, qui étaient
heureux et confiants, ont terminé la soirée avec un sentiment
d’accomplissement, soutenus par les applaudissements et les
acclamations de leur famille, leurs enseignants et leurs amis. La
semaine intense d’activités a permis de mettre en évidence les
capacités de nos jeunes – leur volonté à travailler fort, la force de
leur caractère pour se soutenir l’un l’autre, et leur droit de prendre la
parole et d’être compris par les autres. En d’autres mots, apprendre
« le respect par le HipHop ».

Lana Desmarchais, Director of Human Resources, retired after 22 years with the Kativik School Board.
Lana also served as Management Counsellor and Consultant for ‘Gathering Strength’ during her time
with us. We wish Lana a retirement filled with golfing, gardening and all the other things that make
her heart full.

Hello everybody,
I left my employment as Director of Human Resources on March 23rd in order to enjoy my
retirement. It is quite important for me to convey this note to all my work colleagues, to the commissioners, and to the entire population of Nunavik. Serving you has always been a pleasure!
For the last 22 years, I very much appreciated working with you. All those working days represented a large part of my life. Unfortunately, the work context is not always ideal for friendships
to develop. Stress, tension and professional pressure are often difficult to manage, and leave little
room for human relationships. But, my dear colleagues, I really would like you to know how much
I appreciated you. Working with you has been a privilege.
I have wonderful memories of my time at Kativik; I will always cherish my experience with you
on both the human and professional levels.

J’ai quitté mes fonctions de Directrice des ressources humaines le 23 mars afin de profiter de
ma retraite. Il est très important pour moi d’adresser cette note à tous mes collègues de travail,
tout le personnel, les commissaires et, pourquoi pas, à l’ensemble de la population du Nunavik.
Vous servir a toujours été un plaisir !!!
Pendant ces vingt-deux (22) années, j’ai grandement apprécié travailler avec vous. Toutes ces
journées de travail ont représenté une grande partie de ma vie. Par contre, malheureusement, le
contexte de travail n’est pas toujours évident pour que s’exprime l’amitié. Le stress, les tensions et
les pressions professionnelles sont souvent difficiles à gérer et laissent peu de place à la relation
humaine. Mais, chers collègues, je tiens à vous dire combien je vous apprécie. Avoir travaillé avec
vous a été un privilège.
Je garde de mon passage à Kativik un excellent souvenir, une expérience avec vous qui m’a
beaucoup apporté autant sur le plan professionnel que sur le plan humain.
