Context:
The world of work
Task:
You are applying to an agency to find a summer placement abroad and
you are interviewed over the telephone.
Answer the questions which you are asked on the following points, making use of the
suggestions provided. You’ll need to speak for about 4-6 minutes.

Tout d’abord, peux-tu me donner quelques renseignements
sur toi ?
Example answer
« Alors, je m’appelle Naveena Panchal, ma date de naissance,
c’est le 5 juin et je viens d’avoir 16 ans. Je suis de nationalité
britannique mais mes parents viennent du Pakistan. J’ai un frère :
il s’appelle Akash et il a 12 ans. On habite dans le nord de Londres, par contre, mon frère et
moi, nous allons dans une école au centre de Londres. Elle s’appelle Ashley Academy et je
suis en Year 11. J’aime bien mon école parce que les profs font des cours intéressants.
Comme options, j’ai choisi le français, l’espagnol, l’histoire et la géographie. J’aime bien les
sciences, pourtant je trouve la physique un peu difficile. Je passerai 11 GCSE à la fin de
l’année et je pense que mes notes seront bonnes parce que je travaille bien. »
Guidance
Variety of verbs forms
Show off! Use a variety of verbs with different subject pronouns, not just with je.
Use verbs with il/elle, nous/on and ils/elles.
Do this in different tenses (e.g. present: m’appelle, viennent; future: passerai, seront)
Detail, explain and contrast
For a higher grade, you’re expected to provide interesting content. Do this by providing
details, explanations (e.g. with parce que) and by contrasting ideas (e.g. with mais, par
contre, pourtant).

Speaking tips
You’ll be assessed on how good your accent is. You need to be able to pronounce individual
sounds and words correctly, like the nasal sounds:
[an] ans, en, centre
[on] on, font, allons
[in] cinq, juin, viens
Now, improve Alex’s answer (see below) to make it worth a grade A/A*, using a variety
of verb forms and providing interesting content.
Read it out loud, and perhaps record yourself. Are you happy with your performance?

Add a date of birth: 25 December, and use venir de to say you’ve just turned 16.

For interest, add that your parents are Irish and come from Dublin.
Use two verbs to go with ils and two verbs to go with elle.

avec ma sœur. Je suis en Year 11. Je n’aime pas mon école. »
Change the first sentence and use on + verb and nous + verb.
Explain that you don’t like school because the buildings are too old (bâtiments trop vieux).

« Comme options, je prends français, géographie, musique et cuisine. Je passe
dix examens de GCSE à la fin de l’année. »
Add interest. Say you like geography although you find it a bit hard. Also, at the end, add that
you think your results will be good.
Vary the tenses. Use one verb in the perfect tense, three verbs in the present tense and two
verbs in the future tense.

d’avoir 16 ans.

On habite au centre-ville. Ma sœur et moi, nous allons dans un collège près de la maison. Je
suis en Year 11. Je n’aime pas mon école parce que les bâtiments sont trop vieux.
Comme options, j’ai pris français, art dramatique, musique et cuisine. J’aime bien la
géographie, pourtant je trouve ça un peu difficile. Je passerai dix examens de GCSE à la
fin de l’année. Je pense que mes résultats seront bons. »
