Dear Brothers and Sisters,
As indicated in your 2010 Electrical Industry of Ottawa Annual Report published by Coughlin
and Associates, I would like to congratulate the entire membership on exceeding the record of
hours worked, which was set 21 years ago, by 5.8 percent with over 1.85 million hours
worked in 2010. This was achieved through the hard work and dedication of each member to
their individual contractor, based on commitment and professionalism on a daily basis.
I have been informed by H.B. White Construction of Clinton, Indiana that the 2nd phase of the
20 Mega Watt Solar projects in St. Isidore, Ontario will begin in mid-May. There are also a
number of other solar voltaic farms which may come to fruition in the calendar year. I am
presently trying to negotiate a 27 Mega Watt Solar Farm which is to be constructed and on the
Ontario Power grid by February 2012. If we are successful in obtaining this project along
with the aforementioned solar farm in St. Isidore, we will have over 200 men employed in the
Solar industry in our jurisdiction.
I would like to welcome Dods Electric as they were recently certified by the Ontario Labour
Relations Board after a successful organizing campaign, spearheaded by organizer John
Harrison. Dods Electric is a small commercial and residential contractor whom employs
between three to five men in our jurisdiction. Special thanks to the workers at Dods Electric
for seeing the value in becoming members of Local 586, Ottawa.
Lastly, I again would like to thank the entire membership for their hard work and loyalty to
both the union and their signatory contractor. Local 586 is, and will continue to be the
number one choice for all of our owner/clients for many years to come.

Tel qu’indiqué dans votre rapport annuel de 2010 de l’industrie électrique d’Ottawa publié par
Coughlin and Associates, j’aimerais féliciter tous les membres d’avoir battu de 5,8 p. cent le
record établi il y a 21 ans, avec un total de plus de 1,85 millions d’heures travaillées en 2010.
Ceci a été accompli par le travail et la fidélité de chacun des membres envers leur
entrepreneur ainsi que par leur dévouement et leur professionnalisme sur une base régulière.
H.B. White Construction de Clinton en Indiana m’a informé que la deuxième phase du projet
d’énergie solaire de 20 mégawatts à St-Isidore, en Ontario, débutera à la mi-mai. Plusieurs
autres centrales solaires photovoltaïques pourraient être mises sur pied pendant l’année civile.
Je tente présentement de négocier pour obtenir une centrale solaire de 27 mégawatts qui sera
construite et se trouvera sur le réseau électrique de l’Ontario d’ici février 2012. Si nous avons
du succès à obtenir ce projet ainsi que la centrale susmentionnée à St-Isidore, plus de 200
personnes de notre ressort travailleront dans le domaine de l’industrie solaire.
J’aimerais souhaiter la bienvenue à Dods Electric puisqu’ils ont récemment obtenu leur
certification de la Commission des relations de travail de l’Ontario suite à une campagne
d’organisation, menée par John Harrison, qui a connu un grand succès. Dods Electric est un
petit entrepreneur commercial et résidentiel qui embauche entre trois et cinq employés de
notre ressort. J’aimerais remercier en particulier les travailleurs à Dods Electric d’avoir
reconnu la valeur de devenir membres du Local 586 d’Ottawa.
En terminant, j’aimerais remercier une fois de plus tous les membres pour leur travail et leur
loyauté au syndicat et à leur entrepreneur signataire. Le Local 586 est et demeurera le premier
choix de tous nos propriétaires et clients pour plusieurs années à venir.

Our next regular monthly meeting will be held Monday April 18th, 2011 @ 7:00 p.m. at 1178 Rainbow Street,
Gloucester, Ontario. COME OUT AND TAKE AN ACTIVE PART! To be admitted, you must present an official dues
receipt for at least the month of February 2011. The supper will be served at 5:30 p.m. before the general meeting.
Retirees – The next retirees meeting will take place at 10:00am on Monday April 18th, 2011.
It is with deep sadness and regret that we inform you of the death of Brother Hugo Jaik who passed away March 20,
2011. We wish to express our sincere condolences to his family and friends.
DUES - Please make sure to double check your official dues receipt to see which month you are paid for. It is the
member’s responsibility to have his dues paid up to date. If you do not receive your dues receipt with your newsletter,
please call Cara at the hall.
Washington Pension – The earliest you can apply is 62 years of age (with penalty) or 65 (without penalty). If you are
currently on the Coughlin pension, you must continue to pay your dues to the union to maintain good standing and to
receive your Washington pension. If you do not pay dues and fall out of membership, you LOOSE your Washington
pension. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Angèle at the union office.

Pension de Washington – Vous pouvez appliquer pour votre pension à l’âge de 62 ans (avec pénalité) ou à l’âge de 65

ELECTIONS
This being election year, this Relay will serve as your official notice that nominations for officers of
the Local Union for the next three years will be held at our regular monthly meeting on Monday, May 16th,
2011. The officers to be elected will be as follows:

As per Article 16, Section 10 of the IBEW Constitution, no member shall be nominated for office unless
he/she is present or signifies his/her willingness in writing, nor shall he/she be eligible for any office unless
he/she has been a member in continuous good standing for at least two (2) years prior to nomination.
As per Article 3, Section 8, Sub-section (e) of our Local Union Bylaws, no apprentice shall be eligible to
hold office in the Local Union and Sub-section (f), the member must also attend at least one-half of the
regular meetings of the Local Union for the twelve-month period immediately preceding the month in which
nominations are held. The reading of the ballots will be held June 17, 2011.

Selon l’article 16, section 10 de la constitution de la FIOE, aucun membre ne sera mis en candidature aux
élections s’il/elle n’est pas présent ou ne notifie pas son consentement par écrit, il/elle ne sera pas éligible aux
élections s’il/elle n’a pas été membre en règle de façon continue pour un minimum de deux (2) ans avant sa
mise en candidature.
Selon l’article 3, section 8, sous-section (e) de nos règlements administratifs du syndicat local, aucun
apprenti ne sera éligible à exercer une fonction dans le syndicat local et sous-section (f), le membre doit
également participer à au moins la moitié des réunions régulières du syndicat local pour la période de douze
mois qui précède immédiatement le mois au cours duquel les mises en candidatures sont effectuées. La
lecture du scrutin sera le 17 juin 2011.

NOTICE FOR APPRENTICES
You need to complete the 30hr Health & Safety, Basic Code Book and Construction I BEFORE you go to
Basic Trade School!
If you have not completed the required pre trade school training you will NOT be eligible for reimbursement
for trade school registration cost. Please bring original transcripts and receipt for reimbursement.
Effective May 1, 2010, all apprentices have to bring their Instructor Observation and Evaluation form
with their official school transcripts and receipt in order to be reimbursed.
