AFTES • CONGRÈS INTERNATIONAL • LYON 2011 A safety gallery (L≈12km, Øutile inside 8,00m), for the existing Frejus Highway tunnel is currently under construction. The design and the methods chosen take advantage of the knowledge learnt during the construction of the road tunnel, which can play the role of a survey gallery. The retro-analysis performed since the construction of the tunnel, together with the latest technological progresses allow us to establish a reliable geological model, The technical success of the construction depends on the design of a hard rock single shield Tunnel Boring Machine, suited for high deformable rocks. The following requirements of the have been set : -from the TBM, systematic probe drilling survey at the front, -a high shield conicity, -adaptations of the cutterwheel by adding or moving cutterdiscks in order to increase the boring diameter and avoid the shield becoming trapped, -radial rockbolts from the front-shield, -if needed, consider the possibility to extend this drilling pattern from the inside of the TBM, as ground reinforcement, all around the section, -annular filling with a compressible product in order to limit the ground pressure transmitted to the segment lining -adapted dimensioning of the segments lining and their framework -anticipation during the TBM progress, i.e. utilizing probe drilling survey, in order to be adapted to geotechnical conditions // 114 // AFTES • INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS • LYON 2011
