Ils permettent de situer les œuvres et les auteurs dans une société vivante, et dans une chronologie porteuse de sens. Dès lors qu'ils traversent les cultures, ils offrent la possibilité de croiser les regards, les œuvres et les langues.
Ces mouvements littéraires sont abordés au travers du récit, de la poésie et du théâtre. L'importance respective de chacun de ces genres varie selon les cultures et les époques.
Cette double approche, historique et par genre, permet de dégager la façon spécifique dont chaque littérature s'est produite dans une histoire singulière, soit en inventant une forme qui lui reste propre ou au contraire la déborde, soit en s'emparant de formes nées ailleurs pour leur imprimer un tour particulier. Apparaissent alors des domaines d'influence et de confluence que l'approche comparative permet de mettre en évidence. Thématiques En fonction de leur histoire propre et des cultures dont elles sont l'expression, les littératures ont exploré de façon inégale les thématiques proposées ci-­‐après. Le professeur choisit pour chacune des classes du cycle terminal un itinéraire cohérent et structurant.
