Since then Mr. Timane has underwent training in Portugal (1989/90) and Japan (2005), and became an expert in Industrial Refrigeration and Recycling Systems. Abstract The fishing port of Maputo is a state institution of entrepreneurial nature, subordinate to the Ministry of Fisheries since 1984. Its main assignment is the provision of support of port services to fishing operators, both artisanal and industrial. The fees charged by the fishing port of Maputo, can be considered as symbolic (e.g. 1US $ / day for docking an artisanal fishing vessel) and the revenue generated by port services is used to cover operational costs and to allow for the maintenance of rates accessible to small-scale fisheries operators. The fishing port of Maputo also functions as the main center for the collection and distribution of fish in the region and for the transport of cargo and passengers between Maputo city, the small neighboring islands and the nearest urban centers such as Catembe and Matola. The fishing port of Maputo also plays a role in the tourism industry by welcoming ferries and tourism vessels and allowing free access of tourists and passengers to its docks. Maputo fishing port is being progressively rehabilitated since 1999. The port as seen the rehabilitation of its small scale docking quay, its artisanal fishing basin and the construction of fish storage and processing facilities. The rehabilitation of the industrial fishing wharf and the building a new cold storage are expected to be conducted as soon as possible, to allow accommodating the new industrial tuna fishing fleet of 24 semiindustrial tuna longliners. The arrival of this new fleet represents a huge challenge for the Maputo Fishing Port that struggles for physical space and funding.
